I bought some of this no-rinse on clearance because it got good reviews on amazon.
I'm normally pretty nervous about no-rinse shampoos (or dry shampoos) because they tend
to have a lot of weird chemicals in them, like various alcohols (or even butane-- wtf?) that I
would think would play havoc with anyone's hair.
Anyway, tried out the no-rinse shampoo a couple of times and while it does seem to feel
"clean" while I'm rubbing it into my scalp and hair, afterward it seems to take awhile to detangle,
and feels kind of crummy. It definitely makes my hair look cleaner, but the feel of it... it just
feels gross.
Now, I know some of you are like, well, why not just wash your hair? There's a few reasons why--
I can buy natural shampoo or even use borax to clean my hair and not strip my hair too terribly, or
cause it to be brittle from sulfides. But, mostly, it's that I don't like the water where I live (and I spent two months
over christmas elsewhere and my hair felt magically wonderful due to the water.) I've bought a special
chlorine filter, and while my skin feels less itchy, and I don't smell a bunch of chlorine, I still feel it's bad for
my hair-- so I try to wash my hair here as little as possible.
I hopscotched across the web last night-- reading various reviews and reading about parabens, good alcohols and bad
alcohols, and possible carcinogenics. I was quite taken with a version of powder dry shampoo called Cake
and liked the idea that it smells delicious and I can comb it out right away rather than harshly trying to towel dry my hair
and then waiting for it to dry before brushing it (or else fighting with finger combing wet hair.)
I don't know if I read it in Cake's reviews, or if the ingredients just got me thinking about making it at home but
I came across two very useful websites for those interested:

and then the one I liked best because I have dark hair and this would smell delicious:

So for maybe a little less than $4 for cornstarch and unsweetened cocoa, I tried this tonight on my and my boyfriends hair.
My hair was oilier (or, shall we say, still a little funky from a couple days of not washing it, and then having no-rinse added to it.)
I took a fine tooth comb and combed out the oil and that stuff that accumulates in the oil, be it lint, dirt, dust, or skin cells, and then
took pinches and applied it to various points of my scalp and finger massaged it in, and then took a boar bristle brush and brushed it out.
Essentially did the same with my boyfriends (he has curly hair, I have straight) and partitioned it out while working out the knots.
I've found that I like the scent though it is a tad cloying (while I like chocolate scents, this is a little too milk chocolate for me, which I'm not
a fan of. I did buy cheap cocoa though since it was only this or Hershey which I avoid since they buy from places that use child slaves
(curious? : http://ihscslnews.org/view_article.php?id=173)
I am curious if I can find some high end unsweetened cocoa that would smell better to me, or perhaps some mexican cocoa (or make it myself)
that would have a pinch of cayenne in it which I would think would be good for the blood circulation in one's scalp and thus for one's hair.
Anyway, the results are:
my hair does not feel oily, nor does it feel powdery-- though if I run my fingers through my hair it doesn't have a squeeky clean feeling. It's more
like that feeling when you have some product in your hair, and you've slept on it and it actually makes your hair look good volume-wise but you'd
need another day before it started to feel grungy. That's the only description I can give. My boyfriend's hair looked nicer, and since he sweats in his
sleep and only likes to wash his hair like every 3 days, I like this option
Good for volume.
Good for improving the look of my hair and negating that icky no-rinse look (though no-rinse could work for you as it does have good reviews.)
and I think I could use this a couple times a week since I only really feel the need to scrub my hair when I've been working out or working and feel
like I need to decontaminate the cooties. Also, sometimes I conditioner-wash because I've read that conditioners still have surfectants in them and are
gentler on hair. I could see this helping out when I have that off day when the conditioner really pulls down my hair too much.
And I like the idea that it has TWO ingredients and I know what they are. Or three if you add essential oils to switch up the smell![]()
