Sorry I missed church. I was too busy practicing witchcraft and becoming a lesbian.

I don't know anything about the Nook other than it's by Barnes & Noble. I have given my daughter a Kindle and, this year, a Kindle Fire and she loves them both. It seems to me it's as much about the downloading of media as it is about the hardware. Maybe more. Amazon has the market cornered on ease of use. In fact, I'm an iPad/Mac/I phone guy but I actually use Amazon for my music downloads because it's easier to use and less restrictive than iTunes. Sorry, I don't know much about the Barnes & Noble system...
I went with the kindle because i use amazon a lot and it seems to be doing great, while barnes and noble is sucking.
"Well done. Here are the test results: You are a horrible person. I'm serious, that's what it says: 'A horrible person.' We weren't even testing for that."

I have a kindle and my mother has a nook, lol. There was a series that I wanted my mom to read but she wasn't able to access the author from her Nook...so it seems that some authors might eclusively work through Amazon. On the other hand, she can share her purchases with her friends who have Nooks, so in example, for a book club the book of the week can be purchased by one person and sent to all of his/her friends for free which is a neat feature(maybe this is something that is available on the kindle fire though?)..also, If you are close to a Barnes and Noble they (well at least the one by her) hold classes that teach you all of the ins and outs of your Nook. So both really have their pros and cons.

I recently got my sister a Kindle Fire. I would recommend it over the Nook because Amazon has a larger and often more affordable market and, from what I know, offers more perks than BN does. For example, when my sister registered her Kindle, Amazon gave her a free six-month prime membership, which allows for free shipping on orders from Amazon and free instant streaming of select shows. If you are near a large library, know that you can rent e-books from them with your Kindle, though many libraries (at least the ones near me) are not up-to-date with this yet. You can also "lend" your e-books to friends with Kindles, but you can only do so once per e-book and it's only for a certain amount of time. There may be other restrictions on that; I'm not sure.
I have the $79 Kindle and have been very pleased with it for reading. It's thin, light and the e-ink refreshes very fast on page turns. I chose the non-touch version over the Kindle Touch or Nook Simple Touch (the $99 models) because not having fingerprints on the display is quite nice, and navigation is easy enough with the control pad. Inputting text is a hassle though. The Amazon market is also better with a wider selection and quite a few free classic books.
If you're thinking about one of the tablets (Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet), and will primarily be using it as a tablet rather than an e-book reader, I think they are pretty evenly matched. But understand you are basically buying a gimped out tab that compromises quite a bit for e-book reading and tabbing.

NookColor all the way. I love it!!
