Lightbulb Do you think it's possible to hide your "career" from people?

So, this is my question and maybe it has been asked before - but - do you think it is possible to hide your dancing career from other people - considering the obscure hours, etc etc.

Has anyone here successfully hidden their career and if so, what did you tell friends/family you were doing?

My family live in another country so, they aren't really my issue.
However, certain people in my life - I'd prefer didn't know what I was doing. Not that I want to live a lie, but I don't necessarily want my business being broadcast around my neighborhood etc.

    Any advice? Pointers?

    Portia

I say I'm a night-shift waitress at one of the 24 hour restaurants in town. Explains the late hours and cash tips lying around.

Seriously, unless people are super fucking annoyingly nosy about every aspect of your life, they shouldn't be questioning your cover-up stories anyway.

Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.

It depends where you're dancing too. If you're dancing in the same city as you live, usually it's only a matter of time before you bump into somebody you know. You can always play the deny, deny, deny angle, however this doesn't always work and usually only works if you have a fairly generic look and no striking features.
Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

Not sure how old you are or what sort of crowd you're looking at hiding the job from, but I find that waitressing or bar tending is only a good cover story for parents who are out of town. Friends always want to visit or pop in, and it'd come off a bit strange if I refused to say what bar/restaurant I worked at. Naming one would result in them going in and things starting to unravel. Say you work at a call centre. Those are often open strange hours, especially ones that take incoming calls, offer flexible scheduling, tend to pay well (helps explain why you can afford so much, if it's visible), and are unvisitable.

I've been hiding dancing for almost 3 years now and haven't even had any suspicions voiced to me. I've tended to stick with day/early evening shifts though, so that has certainly helped minimize it, but call centre is still a pretty fool-proof cover story even for the late shift.

It's possible. I've always used being a student & living off student loans as an excuse.

The jobs mentioned above are great ideas. You want something boring that people won't ask much about, and where no one will be able to come visit you. ; )

I tell my class friends I'm working at a bar (not really a lie anyway), although they go in depth with the questioning like
"how much you get paid by the hr?" "where abouts in the city?"... Then I gotta tell a white lie.

But then this one girl said to me "Ooooh are they hiring? I wanna work there!!" then bam I picture her grinding on a pole... So awkward.

If questioned by people who i dont want to tell i dance too, ie people who have no need to know (the clerk at the shop when i am fully made up and buying cigarettes at 10pm) ill tell them i "work for clubs in town doing promotions" its vague enough but quite specific, explains why im going out to work at 10pm, wearing full make up, and if they push and ask which club i work for i just say "i do lots of the clubs" and occasionally name a few i have worked at in the past (non-SC). Promotions can mean anything and it makes it more unlikely that they would ask about me specifically if they were ever trying to name drop to get into whichever club free etc.

I managed to live with a girl for almost a year before telling her about my job. She just thought I went out a lot. Unless people specifically start asking you about work, it's pretty easy.. most people are too self-absorbed to notice your living habits.

^Hah, yes! I always have roommates and they never noticed something was up. It helped that most of the time I had another job that they did know about though, at least for when I did day shift.

It's totally doable. I stripped mostly full time for a year and part time another couple of years. I only told boyfriends.

is it possible to hide stripping from boyfriends? (not living together). I'm in college and thinking about going back. He would never understand because his parents are rich and pay for everything for him, I don't think he even knows what it is to work hard.

I've told people before that I was a babysitter for an ER doctor. That explains the cash and the late hours.

Ive always said I do freelance web design....if Im not free or working, I can always just say I have a major project, or say I cant go out some night because I have a deadline I need to hit by start of business the next day. I actually have had a few clients over the years that friends have referred me to and such, so they dont question it. Funny thing is, I escort now, but my cover story to some friends and my ex is that I do cam, which most ladies try to hide... I sometimes wonder what on earth Ill be doing next, and dont put it past me to use escorting as my new cover story to hide whatever it is Im actually doing by then. La vida loca...

Well, you have to tell people something boring and also a place where if they get suspicious or are just plain nosy cannot come and visit. I know a girl who has been saying call center for 4 years with no problems. Whatever you do make sure you have your story straight backwards and forwards. You could say you sell vintage/resell clothing on ebay. I know a woman who did this but she was a TERRIBLE liar and got super nervous whenever people asked her about it, which only led them to ask more and more questions and she would just contradict herself and talk in circles the whole thing was just extremely awkward. So make sure you know at least a little bit about whatever lie you decide to go with.
