    Dizzy ADVICE Please: CELL PHONES

    My Verizon contract is up.

    My piece-of-ish feature phone sucks.

I live in the NYC Metro Area.

Verizon lowest plan costs $108 per month... family plan 700 minutes (my phone has data, my mothers is a simple flip phone). We use about 40 minutes out of the 700 monthly minutes included in the plan (in-network calls don't count)... so I have to assume that we are over paying.

    Here are my questions:

    1. Should I stay with Verizon?

    2. If you answered yes to question #1: what phone should I get? Droid? iPhone? ( I do like the key pads some droids offer... I suck with touch screens and loathe autocorrect)...

    3. If I don't go with Verizon, what is the best company I should choose? I'd divide monthly cost by *power*--- call clarity, the ability to get service through walls, underground, etc. I was considering T-Mobile, Metro PCS, AT&T.... I dunno about Sprint.

    4. Should I just suck it up and keep my shitty overpriced phone & contract and wait for the iPhone 5 launch in September? <<<< I REALLY don't want to do this.

Those are the questions I have. All help is appreciated.

    Thanks!

Verizon has really ridiculous pricing for adding on features to a family plan. You start @ $70 for 700 / minutes with 2 phones, then add on text messages @ $10 each for for 1000 or $30 for unlimited on the whole account, then add data packages for each phone that start at $30 for smart phones. So minimum, if you want a smart phone for yourself and text frequently, and no data or text on the second phone, it's $110 + taxes and fees. If you want to get a smart phone right now without signing a new contract the cheapest option is to get something like a Droid X used (around $100), activate it on your existing plan, and then start a new contract when the iphone 5 comes out if that's what you really want.

The other option is pre-paid plans like MetroPCS, Cricket, or Virgin / Boost (both Sprint). I don't know much about Metro or Cricket, but the Sprint based pre-paid plans are not that bad if you can live with using the Sprint network only (roaming is not an option). I think Wal-Mart offers a plan too that is based on the Sprint network but the data is really stingy.

Just really depends on what your needs are. Verizon has the most coverage (but other post-paid plans will roam on Verizon's network), Sprint has the most liberal data plan (if you like streaming media it's the best choice), and AT&T is the best if you like getting bent over with shit coverage and data. T-Mobile is trying to bail on the US market so I wouldn't even consider them! Prepaid is the best if you want to save money and not be stuck in a contract with a ridiculous ETF, and you can live with the coverage restrictions.

Buying a phone is easy right?

Verizon is Evil. Eeeeeeeeeevvviiiilll! I know.

    Here are my needs:

    1. Connectivity: Meaning good reception basically anywhere, no dropped calls, no static, no weird shit.

    2. Apps & Stuff: I want to be able to get on the internet. I want useful applications.

    3. PRICE! I want to keep costs as low as possible.... If I got a smart phone today I would end up paying at least $30 more (per month) for a data plan (on Verizon)... but I am wary of MetroPCS because they don't seem like a "real" company

MetroPCS is a real company that operates some of their own infrastructure and has agreements with the majors for extended service elsewhere. I don't have experience with them though since they don't even offer service where I live.

I hate to get too much into "buy this or that" when it comes to mobile phones since the service quality can vary wildly by location and all the providers seem to take a certain delight in screwing you and providing awful customer service.

Just a couple ideas though if $ is your primary concern --

-Move your dumb phone to Tracphone...it's like $120 for a whole year of basic voice service.

-Get an LG Optimus V for yourself, which are around $80 refurbed on ebay or $130 new, and activate it on Virgin Mobile. Service starts at $35 with data for a smart phone. If you don't like it, or what to get an iphone 5 on a post paid plan later (verizon, sprint, at&t, t-mobile), you're out $80 instead of $200+ and a $350 early termination fee. I have used the Optimus V and while it's getting kinda old hardware wise, it will run all the popular Android apps...3rd party web browsers, facebook, angry birds, pandora etc. Android has its own quirks though for the not so tech savy. Not impossibly difficult, but not as intuitive or user friendly as iphones or the new windows phones.

I know people get down on AT&T but I'm a very satisfied customer and love my iPhone 4. FYI, you CAN turn the auto-correct off with the latest software version. I don't know what AT&T's service is like where you are but I work in Manhattan a few times a year and it's always been fine for me. I should add that I am a long-time Verizon hater...
