It seems a mystery why there is so much felt recoil to a mosin, and it does not seem to get you all at once, but after several rounds you begin to think "Ouch".
It must have somthing to do with stock geometry.

Doesn’t take much with an M44. I’ve had the black and blue shoulders to attest to that. And it wasn’t just me, either. It happens to the much heavier sorts who don’t have bobs and vagene, also.

I think heavier sorts suffer more from recoil.
Smaller people react to recoil better. I was with my ex brother in law shooting his .45-90, and he weighed about 270, it was beating him up and not bothering me. Lighter people tend to move back with the stock, while heavy people do not move (as much) and the shoulder tissues get hammered between the stock and their skeletons.
