Default so what's that cleanse/fast where you drink saltwater?

I can't find it in the search. And i think you drank saltwater, and it made you go to the bathroom a lot?

I'm wondering because I haven't been able to shit without the aid of a laxative or enema since we moved here. That's like almost 2 weeks. And even then, it wasn't much. It's starting to become VERY uncomfortable...

I've drank water-a lot of water. And fiber, and fruits and veggies. And that Activia yogurt that's supposed to keep you regular. I swear I haven't eaten this clean in FOREVER.

So I'm thinking doing that cleanse to get all the (literal) shit out and re-set my GI tract.

So...does anyone know that cleanse? Or any other that'll, ummm, clear it all out?

The master cleanse and it's terrible for your kidneys. Don't drink salt water. You crap a lot because your body is flipping out trying to rid itself of the sodium overload. Doing this can really upset your electrolytes.

Try Senna tea. It's natural and gentle, my sister has a lot of constipation issues and it helps her a lot. You can also try strong coffee, or soak in a Jacuzzi (the jets aimed at your belly). I would really use salt as a very last resort.

i have had really bad constipation issues in the past and epsom flushes dehydrated me even more.
try watermelon or celery juice, prune juice, or spicy papaya salad from a thai place.

if you really wanna flush eeeeverything out search "vitamin c flush", i find it less taxing than the salt.

Yup, its called the Master Cleanse.

And Yup, I second trying Senna Tea instead.
Or I can come over and make you coffee...its so strong and works so well, even Colombians are scared to drink it

The best way to do a cleanse is to drink plain water only, for three days. It removes all the toxins out of your system. Like, you will literally see white stuff coming out of your tongue if you do it. I've done it a few times. It sucks but it will probably help you. Salt water is really bad for your body especially if you won't be eating regular foods too. Glitzy is right it will dry you out and only make you want to drink more.

    Hey,
    I've totally been there.
You can do a few things:
    1. Most extreme: take about 1-2 tbs of epsom salt in a glass of water and chug. It will be nasty. It will come on quickly. And it will suck. But then it will be done unless your body needs to keep shitting for the next day due to salt (depends on your body.)
    2. Take 2 grams of vitamin c every fifteen minutes until you start having diarrhea. Gentler. Doesn't taste nasty. Takes longer to work, but because it comes on more gradually you can stop taking the vit c and thus hopefully not have the squirts for the next day.
    3. Go get some blackstrap molasses and add it to anything or just add to water and drink. I'd say do about 3 tbs morning and night and you'll soon have poop that just falls out of you. Great for hemmoroid sufferers or those with anal fissures. Also great for women because it's chock full of magnesium and other stuff that helps our periods.
    4. If you have any oily pills-- fish oil, evening primrose, etc, take 3-4 pills morning and night. You'll probably start pooping fairly regularly. You can also incorporate cold pressed virgin coconut oil into your diet-- 1 tsp to start and slowly work up over a couple of weeks until you're at 2-3 tbs a day. On toast, in smoothies, or just on a spoon (though have some food with it or you might have a stomachache.) This is actually good for people who want to lose weight, believe it or not as it satiates you faster, and gets some good oils into your system so your body doesn't try to get fat (which is necessary) from junk sources.
    5. Drink two glasses of warm water first thing upon waking. A lot of constipation has to do with not enough water and bad diet. What do you normally drink? What do you normally eat?
    6. Whenever you think about it, you can give yourself a colon massage. Gently palpate the abdomen, and rub in small circles and move around the abdomen. If you feel any knots that could be stopped up food, and you can spend more time gently massaging that area. This is a great thing to have your boyfriend do because it's hard to relax and palpate/massage at the same time.
    7. Another option is to eat bananas (or probably any fresh fleshy, mushy fiberous veggie or fruit-- just not something that needs a lot of chewing because then you'll really have to get that stuff into a paste to make it work) for 24 hours. Your body will be SHOVING out more poop than you thought possible in one dump. I've done it with bananas and it was pretty gentle except for the second when it hit (and surprisingly it hit fast even though I'd been having bananas for 24 hours) and I was seriously about to crap myself in a Target if I didn't waddle my clenched cheeks to a bathroom in four minutes or less.
    8. Like #7, get some good, without preservative dried plums (aka prunes), apricots, and/or other fleshy dried fruit and focus on really chewing that into a paste. 2-3 a day should keep you regular after you've gotten your colon back into normal shape, but you'll either have to eat, say, half or a whole package with a LOT of water to flush it out. I wouldn't eat it all at once because you could have a stomacheache and it sucks to have an ache AND be constipated.
    9. Look into exercises that stimulate the bowel: yoga moves that twist the torso and stretch out the abdomen to naturally kind of squeeze things along, and some calisthenics of jumping up and down on a rebounder, or jumping rope and jumping jacks. Get the blood pumping and the movement helps push things along. In my experience though, if you're already constipated, this just helps whatever other option you pick-- this never really helped me by itself.

    Things not to try:
    1. A shit ton of cayenne unless you like the epsom salt shits soo much that you want to try it this time with a side of burning anus. Great if you like immediately transitioning from toilet to already half-full bathtub (or, if you have a bidet Cayene though is seriously good, just not in large bung-hole burning amounts. It helps bring blood circulation to an area. So once you start pooping semi-normally, start incorporating spices into your diet.

Regarding the diet, you might look into food-combinging. You probably just have run of the mill constipation that will be aided by a few steps suggested here, but you could also have a lactic or gluten intolerance which isn't that uncommon just because our processed foods have changed a lot more quickly than we can evolve to handle them. Look into some digest enzymes (I think Digest Gold is a good one on Amazon and at health food stores-- they sell several other digestive-problem specific enzymes though) and look into how not to combine-- say, fruits and veggies, starches and protein, cheese and carbs. Each type of food requires a different processing by the stomach-- so if you, say, eat fruit which normally digests VERY quickly, with a big steak, proteins typically taking the longest to digest, then that fruit has to wait around for the steak to digest and could actually ferment and throw off your entire digestive process. Like I said, you probably won't have that extreme of a case, but it's fascinating once you start researching and playing with corrective diets.

These are all things that have worked for me, and along with drinking more water (and I think drinking spring water is more helpful than drinking distilled unless you're cleansing-- I drank distilled for years and I do think that's one factor in why I was so constipated during that time) and not letting so much time pass between bowel movements. Once you do some of these things and don't take laxatives anymore, which are bad for long term use because your colon muscles get lazy and then you really *can't* poop, you'll be regularly pooping. If you're like me, it's worse right before your period, so definitely plan ahead and step up your diet and water appropriately around that time.

I've done a salt water flush - sea salt to be exact (do NOT use table salt).

Two teaspoons (or one tablespoon - I have used teaspoons) of sea salt, 32 oz of water, warm it up on the stove & drink! You can also add some lemon juice (a VERY small amount) to help enhance the taste. It worked like a charm for me! Within 30 minutes I am on the toilet, and pee/shit out a massive amount each time (I go about 3-5 times within a 4 hour time frame).

You're supposed to drink it in the morning before eating or a few hours after your last meal; I did it in the morning the few times I did it. I know on the site I originally got this from it suggests to keep this up for a week, but I just do it one day & feel a lot better afterwards; I personally use it as a very thorough laxative The taste is bearable if you drink it relatively fast; not something you sip slowly for sure.

It isn't for everyone, but it's something that's proven effective for me.

This is what you're looking for. You should be able purchase these salts at your local health food store.

Eat a lot of prunes. I had a lot of GI troubles a couple of years ago and had to do a regular 'cleanse', they gave me some awful stuff to drink and I said fuck that and just ate a lot of prunes. Mirlax helps too.

The sea salt flush... Terrible experience. Drank as much as I could until I just started throwing it back up, then laid on my right side (I think to help it get out of the stomach into the small intestine faster) and listened to the horrible noises coming from my abdomen, accompanied by terrible cramps. Grand finale is pissing out your ass. Stick with senna smooth move tea at night, though it usually leads to cramps too...

I second that too frequent laxatives will give you "lazy" guts and make you reliant on them. "If you frequently use certain laxatives over a period of weeks or months, they can decrease your colon's natural ability to contract and actually worsen constipation."

Have you considered maybe the change of environment is the cause? You're at a completely different elevation, the water is different (when we came back to the States after 4 months away, American water gave me horrible diarrhea), barometric pressure etc etc. Are you getting enough exercise? 30min of cardio a day can make a huge difference. If the water is harder than you're used to (more minerals and metallic compounds), maybe a water softener or filter would help.

Better to address the cause than just treat the symptoms. Any improvements, by the way?

I did the salt water cleanse a few times. It works but it can be an unpleasant experience. I also drank some green tea with senna leaf in it. That also made me go a lot, but i had really bad stomach cramps at first. I don't know, maybe I drank too much.

Mediocrity-yeah, I get constipated from traveling. It just takes me a bit to adjust. I have been exercising here. The gym is right within walking distance, and they have a room where I can bring my daughter-yay!

Danni-I did actually end up drinking some aloe juice. I bought a can from one of the bajillion vending machines around here that was white grape with aloe. Tasted pretty good, too. Hubby thought drinking aloe was weird though and wouldn't try it.

All better now. Thanks everyone for the tips! Now I know twisting, palpating, aloe, vitamin C, and senna tea work for me. And I didn't have to drink saltwateror take any more laxatives-yippee!

Do NOT intentionally drink saltwater under any circumstances!

Initially, you may have results (bowel movements) because 1) your body is trying to purge the sodium but in reality you'll end up 2) dehydrating yourself and actually making the constipation WORSE! As some one who has been hospitalized for dehydration, I can attest to this fact.

Just a few symptoms of dehydration- inability to have a bowel movement, feeling like you have to pee every five minutes and only getting a tiny dribble after sitting on the pot for ten minutes, abdominal pain, kidney pain, gradually increasing nausea until you choke on solids and vomit any fluids you ingest, hot and cold flashes/feeling feverish, not to mention how sick you LOOK!

If dehydration is solidly a fluid issue (relatively normal sodium and potasium without infection), you'll be treated only with a saline IV. If sodium and potasium are out of whack too, they'll treat with the needed supplement, plus IV. The only medication they give you throughout the entire ordeal is an anti-nauseant so you don't upchuck and set yourself back further. You will be given NO PAIN MEDS at any point in the treatment, and the pain can be agonizing (I laugh off most injuries, but I bawled like a two year old both times I was in the hospital), because any change in the pain you experience is used as an indicator of how treatment is going.

So yeah- NO! /horror story rant

It appears that you've tried just about every remedy I would recommend (not counting senna; do try that). Your best bet is to see a doctor about it if it's been this long. You could have a blockage of some sort. It could be as simple as needing a stronger laxative or a stool softner to pass, or it could be as extreme as part of your intestines becoming twisted. It could have started as constipation and persistent use of the laxatives/enemas has been flushing it out a little at a time so that you are vacating, just not what seems like an "adequate" amount, which can seem and feel like continued constipation. Perhaps your diet recently just isn't providing enough solids to appear normal (that can happen if you eat a lot of fruits and/or vegetables with a high water content, or don't eat a lot of dairy/meats or breads). Either way, if the problem persists any longer than a few more days, do see a doctor.

I came across this website where people have submitted what seem like a hundred or so solutions for what works for them personally:
    http://www.myhomeremedies.com/static/constipation.html

It's weird because I've been doing really great, and then bam-- all of a sudden, this old problem has creeped up again. Luckily, the hot water solution in the morning
worked but I'm going to have to dig to find out what the real problem is. Hope the OP's problem has cleared up.

I have no help to offer as far as the salt-water cleanse, but if you are suffering from irregularity throw out the activia and go for some pro-biotics (I suffer from consitpation as well). You can find them at just about any health food store. (You can take pre-biotics and pro-biotics)

(Got this from LiveStrong since I was to lazy to type something up myself).

Both prebiotics and probiotics are important for maintaining the natural flora in your gut. Prebiotics simply feed probiotics so they can grow and flourish in your bowels. They are simple short-chain fructo-oligosaccharide molecules, or a type of basic fruit sugar. Prebiotics survive stomach acid so they can travel safely to the gut to feed probiotics. Lactobacillus acidophilus is the most common type of probiotic, explains the University of Maryland Medical Center. Probiotics, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, help breakdown food in the intestines so that nutrients can be absorbed and waste can be passed

Not only do I love these for keeping me regular, but they are great to take if your on anti-biotics to prevent yeast infections.
