Default Hair extensions-how do you keep them looking good?

I get human-hair hair extensions micro-ringed in every few months and inevitably, after a few weeks they start to look scratty. I'm careful when I wash them, I use deep conditioner, I tie them up to go to sleep, I blow dry really gently using serum and leave-in conditioner, wash them as seldom as possible, all the advices I have been given, I follow. Yet I see some girls at work and see pictures of you girlies on here, with gorgeous, shiny healthy looking weaves or extensions and I wonder what secret am I missing?
Apologies if this is already a thread, I couldn't find one

I think they use bad quality hair if you are doing all the right things. Are they using remi hair, where all the cuticles are going the same direction? It also depends how it is processed in the factory, if its bleach its higher likely it will look fizzy over time.

Wash your hair gently towards one way down, from the scalp towards the ends, dont go leather sideways or from the back etc. Make sure your conditioner is a good one! When I had fusions I used matrix masks each time and left them one for 5 mins in the shower. Brushing the hair prioring to washing helps. Make sure to gently wrap the towel around the hair, even better just pat the water down and let it air dry without the towel. Use a hair extensions hair when brushing, or blow drying. What I noticed helped with my extensions is when I did parting blow dying, start from the bottom and work your way up. Putting something your scalp when you sleep, or putting it into braids will help the extensions. Lastly, if everything is followed by... then use a hair straighter!

I just got my hair put in a couple days ago and it got tangly the first night.. Some hair is just bad quality, no matter how good you take care of it. And you'll never know, cause even if it's the same brand or whatever no hair will be the same as the next one.

Thank you for all the replies.
I never thought about the hair quality, that's a really good point.
So I look for 'Remi' hair-I'd always let my hairdresser get it.

I was advised to wash as seldom as possible by my hairdresser but come to think of it that's when I had them braided in-maybe just to stop them coming loose.
I will make sure I get better hair next time, thanks again

Okay so I have remy hair in. And the same thing's happened. It's looking 'Rough' already (it got put in 3 weeks ago) and it's itching and scratching the back of my neck. I don't know what I can do, what products can I use? Anybody?

Personally I'd stick with clip-ins so I could take care of my extensions the way they need to be treated, and my regular hair and scalp the way it needs to be treated. That's just me.

Mine are in amazeballs condition. I have great lengths. I only wash 1x per week using sulfate free shampoo and conditioner where the bonds are and salon quality shampoo and conditioner on the ends. I use Moroccan oil when it's damp then blow dry. I braid it when I sleep and put more Moroccan oil on the dry hair every night. I brush it once in the morning, before work and before bed making sure I've got out any matting.

Don't overwash. Replace extensions every 4 - 6 months. Clip ins are best because you can take them out so you don't have to wash them quite as often.

The first time I had micro link it look like crap afterwards I realized that the hairstylist was not using 100% Virgin Human hair right now I have in Micro Link extensions since January and they look new I wash them twice a week, deep condition and use argan oil to keep them from drying out. Look online for 100% Virgin Human hair that was cut from a donor's head.

Take them out and give them a bleach bath.

    1. Mix one gallon very hot water (it is important to use the hottest water from the tap) with 1/4 cup of Clorox bleach. Use plain Clorox bleach and not the scented one.

    2. Completely submerge the hair into the water for approximately 2 or 3 minutes. Do not leave longer than 3 minutes. Small bubbles may appear during the process. Comb or brush very gently when submerged.

    3. Remove hair and submerge in a basin of lukewarm water that has been premixed with a small amount of shampoo. Gently lift in and out for about 3 minutes. Brush or comb hair gently when submerged.

    4. Remove and blot/squeeze dry with clean towel. Do not rub hair together.

    5. Mix 1/4 cup of ammonia to 3 cups of warm water. Dip hair unit in and out twice.

    6. Repeat step 3.

    6. Apply conditioner, rinse and style.

Hair will be smooth, tangle free and look like new!

It is advisable to wear gloves and eye protection during the bleach bath. Do not mix bleach and ammonia together. These are off-scalp instructions and not to be followed while wearing your hairpiece or extensions.

Also, when dipping/submerging/brushing/rinsing the hair, make sure you are holding it with the root up, brushing down, and water rinsing downwards. In other words, don't flip the hair around in different directions, make sure you are encouraging the cuticles all downwards. Just dip the hair in the bleach or ammonia water, swish, and brush while hold the roots up, brush downwards, then repeat for 2-3 minutes. Then rinse with tap water the same way, roots up, brushing and rinsing downwards.

Your hair will feel silky and new, I've done this multiple times with extension hair! The only bad thing about it though is that will relax the curl a little bit.

Does that work with clip ins? When I was reading I was like is she joking because it sounds like it would fry them? What's the concept behind bleach and ammonia because both are so drying?
