    Default Compulsive oversleeping

It doesn't matter what time I go to sleep, I'm sleeping at least 10 hours, which is usually well in to the afternoon of the next day. I don't want to sleep so much!! Monday I slept uninterrupted (without waking) for near 12 hours, and I was PISSED when I woke up at 3:30pm. Does anyone else have this problem or a similar problem?

This is ultimately the reason I lost my job and had to start camming, also why I had to drop 2 classes this semester, and now it's why I'm not logging as many cam hours as I would like. I love the feeling of being up in the morning making coffee and breakfast while my hubby gets ready for work, but that only happens if I haven't gotten to bed yet.

    I JUST WANNA BE NORMAL!

I have this exact same problem. Whatever I do, whatever time I set my alarm, I feel like I need a few more hours. I sleep and sleep and sleep... I find when I make massive effort to tire myself out in the day and avoid all caffeine I do sleep with a more normal pattern... and find it easier to wake up.

I'm sorry I don't have any more advice, I'll be watching this thread cos I completely understand what you're going through!

What's the normal sleep pattern in your house? I worked nights for ten years, and my husband has too, so we consider it a victory if we're up by noon or 1pm. Then again, we don't ever go to bed until 3-4am.

    What's your normal circadian rhythm?

Currently my habits are 2/3am till around 1-3pm. For all of 2008-early 2011 my habit was 11/midnight till 7:20am, which was never really natural to me but I usually got up on time. My hubby's been up at 7am ready for work everyday for as long as I have known him, and is almost always asleep by midnight (except on the weekends). Just last year did it really become a huge issue. I did have a very 3rd shift lifestyle for 05-07.

I have the same sort of sleep schedule - 2/3am til 12/1pm. I used to get mad that I slept 9-10 hours, but I finally decided to just embrace it. I've tried forcing myself to get up at the 7-8 hour mark and I just wouldn't be productive. If I didn't feel like it was time to get up, then even if I was up, I wouldn't do anything until I laid back down for a nap. Nowadays, I'll set my alarm for 2pm (I have to be at work no earlier than 3pm most days) just in case I don't get up by then, and then don't look at the clock at all until I feel ready to get up. I don't wanna guilt-trip myself into getting up before I'm ready, or psyche myself out that I only have so-many hours left which makes it hard to fall back asleep. And ever since then, I've been getting up naturally by around noon and am much more productive in the daylight hours and don't feel the need for a nap. If I happen to stay up til 5-6am, sure, I'll sleep til 1-2-3pm (granted I don't work before then), but so what? If you stay up late, and you have a 10 hour sleep cycle, then you'll sleep late. I don't give a crap if other people think I'm lazy.

But if it's so bad that you can't even get up if you have work or school, that's a different issue. Even if I'm tired as shit, if I have to get up, I get up. Then I'm just sorta a zombie until I find time for a nap. I don't think you need to try to change how many hours you naturally want to sleep, but you need to train yourself to get out of bed when the alarm goes off if you have to for work or classes, even if that means making up the extra hours later in the form of a nap or being sleep deprived for a few days until you can crash. Maybe try putting your alarm on the other side of the room, so you're forced to get out of bed to turn it off. Then don't go back to the bed.

I don't think I'll ever get myself to be "normal" and live off of only 6-8 hours of sleep a night and be totally rejuvenated off of that. I just can't. It's just a matter of sucking it up on the days I didn't go to bed early enough to get a full 10 hours. Maybe others think I'm lazy - oh well. Aren't they lucky that they can live off 4 hours of sleep. My body doesn't function that way, so I do what I can to live with it.

Set a few different alarms. Also, maybe don't eat late. I find I wake up super early if i cut back on my meals in the evening.

Could also be depression issues, like not being happy with life. When i'm not happy I tend to sleep very late to try to avoid it all.

2/3am isn't as bad as it could be, sounds like typical dancer sleep schedule. Try setting your alarm back by half an hour a week to get where you need to be, say starting at 2pm this whole week, then 1:30 next week, etc etc. What helps me also is the nights my hubs does have to be in bed by midnight (he works a few day shifts), I go to bed with him and just lay with him. Bring your phone or lappy if you have to at first, my husband sleeps with the TV on so I have something to watch. Laying there in the bed with him may make you sleepy. I know after 15 minutes of snuggling him I'm ready to sleep as well.

    Default Re: Compulsive oversleeping

    I have struggled with oversleeping.

I was gone for work from 7:40 PM until 5 AM Thursday - Saturday and then Sunday I had nothing to do, but then I had my son from Monday at like 8 AM until right before work Thursday and he gets up at 8 AM. It was SO hard to switch between schedules, I admit for months I overslept (til like 3-5 PM) and had my ex watch him and I felt so bad. I just couldn't wake up. I would try so hard but I just couldn't. This schedule went on for over a year.

Eventually I switched to a club that let me get home around 2:30 AM. I was able to get up earlier on the days I worked (when my son is with his Dad), so it was easier to transition from waking up at noon back to 8 AM on the days my son is home.

I spend a lot of money on Red Bull, I usually drink 3-4 each day, but the $7 a day is worth spending time with my son. Also, I tried three different prescription stimulants with my doctor and found one that didn't make me feel high/crackhead like but allows me to wake up in the morning. I tried Focalin XR, Adderall, and Ritalin. I stuck with Ritalin, it is only a mild body buzz and makes me chatty but I don't feel high or twitchy. I refuse to look like a drug addict around my son. The Focalin XR wasn't strong enough, it felt like a glass of pop (nothing). The Adderall worked TOO well, I was staying up for two days straight on 30 mg, I lost weight, wasn't eating, twitched, looked like a drug addict--I got off that one pretty quick. The Adderall was also really addictive and has an 18% rate of anorexia compared to like 1.5% on Ritalin. Ritalin doesn't make me feel addicted, I am prescribed four 10mg pills per day (instant release) but I usually only take 1-2 to help me when I need it. The Ritalin also doesn't make my appetite disappear like Adderall, and I'm not sweating constantly and peeing all the time like on Adderall. The side effects of Adderall are really intense, I would only recommend it for people with narcolepsy. I like the Ritalin because it is less potent than Adderall so you can use it when you need it. You can take one when you wake up, and then four hours later if you need to, and not feel coked out.

The Ritalin works just fine for me and if you are having serious problems you might have a sleeping disorder. Shift work disorder is a recognized medical condition and prescription stimulants and sleeping medications can help you. I have pain pills with codeine in them that I use if I really can't sleep (Tylenol 3's), but I rarely use them--maybe 2-3 times a month. I usually can fall asleep on my own. You should talk to your doctor about using medication to help regulate you if this is interfering with your life. I really sympathize with you, it's a terrible struggle.
If you are willing to do for one year what other's won't, you can spend a lifetime doing what other's cant.

I had this problem from snoring. I could sleep 9, 10, 11, even 12 hours and wake up tired. A friend talked me into talking to a VA doctor about a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure). This essentially forces air in and hold the airway open. No snoring. Because of the snoring I was waking up 15 times or more a night, turning over and such. Snoring was preventing me from going into stage 4 REM sleep and truly resting.

With my machine I can bounce up from 7 hours and feel great. If you snore, wake up alot, or have that sensation of falling that jolts you awake, talk to a physician about a sleep study and getting a CPAP.

    (snip)What Causes Over – Sleeping

Sleep problems are usually caused by either physical or mental issues (or both).

This may sound harsh, but let me explain it in a very simple way…

From my understanding, oversleeping comes from a combination of two main factors that can be summed up as:

    1. Poor sleep – meaning you’re not getting enough rest from your sleep. If you feel tired after 7-8 hours of sleep, there’s a good chance that what you need is not more sleep but BETTER sleep.

Your sleep may be damaged by a physical sleep disorder. (I myself also had to treat my Sleep Apnea as part of the process.)

Most likely, though, is that you don’t sleep well, because of bad habits, emotional issues or outside conditions – things like stress, poor nutrition, shift work or a noisy environment.

    2. Depression or Lack of motivation – simply put, when the clock rings, you PREFER to stay in bed than face the day (whether you’ll admit it or not). Why?

Well, there are many possible reasons, but if I had to guess, I would say that you are either unhappy, unsatisfied or simply bored with life – you have no sense of purpose or inspiring goals.

These two factors work together to keep you in bed – the more tired you are, the more “mental power” you need in order to overcome the temptation to oversleep.(snip)

I had this problem too and I was diagnosed with Hypersomnia. It's a much milder version of narcolepsy, and it means that while 7-8 hours is the normal amount of sleep an average person needs, people with hypersomnia need more in order for them to function and their bodies to rest etc.

I got adderall for it, and it helped, but I didn't like constantly taking stimulants like that. There's a new med out called Nuvigil which is meant to be good, but it's pretty expensive.

I was on adderall for a couple months, but it didn't change the sleeping habits. When do you take yours? I would take mine when I got to work around 8:30-9am, but it wasn't helping me get moving in the morning. I was once taking phentermine for weight loss, and was getting up okay?! I am going to try some experimenting on my own before I go see the doctor. Thanks for all the responses!! I think it might be more motivating since people are trying to help.

    Default Re: Compulsive oversleeping

I had to take mine as soon as I woke up for my morning classes, and then another dose in the early afternoon. On the days that I had just to lay around the house, I wouldn't take it so that my body wouldn't get as used to it. But, the main problem I had was waking up in the morning in the first place, and obviously if you're not awake, you can't take the pills. My roommate was willing to get involved and help me, as for teens they advise a parent wake the person and pretty much put the pill in their mouth to get it working and get them out of bed. But, the doctor wasn't willing to go that route as he didn't want a fellow college student being in charge of giving me meds when I was barely awake.

Something that also helped me was just kinda rolling with it, and trying to organize my life around my sleeping instead of the other way around. For example, instead of fighting to get up in the morning, I'd stay up overnight and make my 8am class the last thing I did before bed... sleep until 3pm and then go to my later classes, nap in the evening then up all night. But that's hard t do with kids, or a regular day job etc.

Wait, the Dr. gave you Adderall because you oversleep? I don't have narcolepsy, but I can sleep for over 12 hours and still feel tired. The other day, I was really tired and I went to bed at 8:00pm, then woke up at 3:00pm the next day. I know oversleeping can be just as bad as not getting enough sleep, but I'm tired no matter how many hours I sleep. Do you think if I told the Dr. this, he/she might prescribe me Adderall? It really helped my sleepiness in the past, and I'm trying to figure out how I can talk the Dr. into prescribing it. I'm so sorry for hijacking the thread, by the way.

Yup, adderall is actually pretty common for people that have been diagnosed with hypersomnia and other sleep disorders. There's a great forum (I think its talkaboutsleep.com or something like that) where they discuss it a lot. It doesn't help with the oversleeping really, unfortunately, because if you're asleep then you can't take any pills, and if you take them before you go to sleep then it'll keep you awake and you'll oversleep when you do finally doze off anyway. But in terms of keeping you awake and alert during the day, it helps. Especially if your body is telling you that you need 10 hours of sleep plus naps, and you only have time to get 8 hours.

Edited to add: When I got mine I'd been complaining of oversleeping and things to my therapist for a while, and she sent me to a psychiatrist who tried to give me Nuvigil. BUT my insurance didn't cover that med, so I couldn't get it. I was researching other meds and heard about adderall being used, so I went to my regular doc and she prescribed it for me easily.

I had a big problem with this a few months ago, but for me I think it was poor diet and a crazy sleep schedule.

When I know I have to wake up at a certain time and be productive, I set an alarm an hour early and put an Adderall by the bed. I wake up, take the pill, and then about an hour later it starts working and I kick the day's ass.

Thanks!! Some people say that if you mention the word Adderall to the Dr., they're not likely to prescribe it to you, so I'm not sure if I should hint at it or just ask for it. I've used it before, but I don't want to tell them that, because it wasn't my prescription. I thought they just prescribed it for ADHD and for narcolepsy, so I'm really glad to hear that you were prescribed it with neither ADHD or narcolepsy. I'm just going to find a psychiatrist and tell them about my sleeping problems and tell them about how I heard Adderall was good for it.

Oh, I know it doesn't help with oversleeping. I don't mind oversleeping; I just care about being awake during the day.

When I was still living at home I would oversleep through the loudest alarm clock . I think it had to do with the allergy medicine I was taking.

Working as a stripper, difficult for me to get to bed right away, going to bed around 4-7am and getting up around 2-4pm O_o .

Also it seems like computer screens don't let me get tired. I take melatonin (natural sleep aid) and sometimes it helps.

^^ I heard melatonin can be good for getting to sleep at night. Sometimes I take Nyquil to pass out, because I've taken stuff during the day to keep me awake. It's a vicious cycle for sure.

Sammii, I think as long as you seem normal and describe all your sleeping problems first, you should be ok. I think most of the people that have trouble just walk in there and are like "Hi! So I need adderall..." lol. By the time I saw my regular doc (it was all in one day, getting shuttled around the health center) I was in tears and saying "why can't I just try adderall??" and she was like oh ok, sure. Explain all your sleeping issues and then talk about different medicines you've read about online and then just say you feel adderall is the best you for right now

I used to have this problem when I was iron deficient, and then again when I was zinc deficient (eating an extremely healthy diet, no meats aside from raw fish). I was tired constantly, though I attributed that to it being pre-winter (less light, less exercise, etc.). Nope...nutritional deficiencies! Women lose blood every month, so they're more prone to iron deficiencies.

    Just something to consider.

I have tried melatonin, but I find two things happen, I get a headache if I don't fall asleep within 45mins and I sleep really deep and not much less. I got my bloodwork done about a year ago to make sure I wasn't out of whack from being vegetarian.

My current prerogative is to take vitamin D first thing in the morning. I also take B12 and Omega3. No progress, but I am trying!

You should go get some bloodwork done. Get you adrenals and thyroid checked and make sure you do it at an endocronologist.

I would ABSOLUTELY not take adderall for energy-I took it for my ADD and it was so harsh I had to stop cold turkey. Once you get off adderall you feel like you dont have the energy to get up without it. Its an amphetamine, you shouldn't need an amphetamine to get up!!!
