I'm not diabetic though my boyfriend was recently diagnosed last summer as a type 1. He works in a restaurant and doesn't get a single break all day to check his blood sugar. I seriously want to call OSHA or something though being in a right to work state there isn't anything we can do without making waves and being let go without a reason which is legal in Texas. On busy days he just munches on food through out the day. Its so busy where he wont need any insulin at all and is usually low under 50 sometimes after work even after eating a ton of gummi bears it is hard to get his blood sugar back up. On slow days he'll take insulin at least once during a shift and since he is on a sliding scale and you never know when a rush of customers will come through it's impossible to stay in the correct range without going too low or end up staying above 200. It's been 8 months since he was diagnosed and we are still having a hard time knowing when the best time to check through out the day is. Though he dose try to drink a little soda every now and then when its busy. Usually he is high before work and skips the insulin. If he takes it he will end up low.

With dancing I'd say before and after stage will be the best times to check blood sugar. Though if your using a pump you must need a lot more then what my boyfriend takes. He never needs more then 12-20 units of novalog twice a day then lantus at night. At my last club we were dead during the week though weekends I had no time for a break. It was a lap dance club where I would just do dance after dance from table to table. It would slow down a little around 11pm then get really busy at 1am then since we were open until 4am we would slow down a little from 2-3am and the last hour would be the hour I work hardest since everyone waits til the last minute to get a dance. I was just thinking the other day how hard it would be to have diabetes and dance. You would defiantly want to take a lot of caution at first until you find your own testing schedule. It will probably be different from night to night depending on how busy it is. Our dj use to call our names out like 20 minutes before we had to go on stage. Maybe have your dj do the same so you have time to check glucose.
Also what about insurance? Without benefits diabetes gets so expensive. It's the one reason my boyfriend has not left his job. There are other restaurants where he could get breaks though those restaurants don't have benefits. I really want him to find another job. He gets a lot of cuts and burns at this restaurant. They need to hire more employees though the manager has said he has gotten everyone there to do the work of two people. Then again insurance is nothing but a discount. I think store brand test strips cost the same as the freestyle strips(after insurance).

Sorry if I turned this in to a rant. Wish I could be more help. How do you do it? And if you don't mind me asking do you have insurance with another job or are you able to cover the cost of your supplies with just dancing?

hey no problem! rant on! ))

i've been a type one my whole life basically and i am 33.

i danced 14 yrs ago, for 4 yrs. back then i just did injections. but the control is very poor with injections. the misconception of being a "bad diabetic" or needing a ton of insulin if you're on the pump is rampant.

it's not the amount, but the timing that's so great about the pump. it's a constant drip, steady feed. so therefore you dont have those damaging swings of dangerous highs and lows. every time he is high dangerous things are happening to him. i only use about 30 units a day. but its on a drip of like .600 of a unit per hr.

i have ins elsewhere. believe me, no ins would cost around 6k a month just in supplies for a pump. nevermind dr visits.
my old club was awesome. ive never had alcohol and i think i got a lot of respect for that. still havent tried to this day. so when i was low my dj would let me sit in the booth and drink my oj cuz they knew if i was looking weird it wasnt alcohol lol.

i need to go back due to losing my vanilla job. i just bought a house as well as i have an exp. car to pay for. so i need cash asap whilst looking for another vanilla job. i did my sugars before my sets to make sure i was ok to go up and then about 4 other times on a 7-4am shift.

but now...id have to go to injections while working which is mad science to rotate pump figures into injections grrrr. so we'll see what happens. going to chk my clubs out this sat. see if they're "grimey" now.

fell free to ask any health questions...i AM grays anatomy.....my fav book

Would that be possible? (It seems like it could be based on what I've googled...)
yes! i thought of this, but the club i wanna work at requires full nudity...well, you can have kne highs lol.

plus, the tubing is so long, and the pump is quite bulky. like a really archaic beeper lol.

should i be upfront w/ management on my condition and just see what happens?
