Default Is this diet/ exercise enough to lose bum & thighs?

I want to lose the weight asap, but not through water loss which is why i haven't bothered with the detox type diets. I'm eating around 1200 - 1400 calories per day. My exercise seems to total around 500 cals burned per day (elliptical/ running/weights/ strength/ swimming).

My first week I only lost 1ln which is a bit discouraging. Second week i GAINED 0.5lb!

    Suggestions?

Unless you're really big to begin with, you shouldn't be losing more than a couple pounds a week, so don't get discouraged. It sounds like you're on a very healthy track.

Here's a link to a formula that will help you determine how many calories you would need per day to maintain weight - and then how many you would need to lose weight. http://www.calories-in-foods.com/how...loriesaday.php
I think you're probably doing just fine on that. Also, are you actually counting the calories and logging them? Or just guessing? Try specifically figuring out how many calories are in each meal and snack and log them down. Sometimes, you'd be surprised at how you think you're eating healthy and consuming less calories than you actually are.

And here's a list of metabolism-boosting foods and drinks to maybe try to add into your diet. http://www.metabolism-boosting-foods.com/

Also, for strength training, up your protein some more. You'll need it for muscle repair and growth after a workout, and muscle burns fat (not a ton of fat, but still, it helps).

what do you drink? I agree with aurora... it takes time and patience just keep at it and you will see a result. If you wanna see it faster you could cut out those carbs (rice and pasta) with dinner but probably no point in cutting it out unless you plan on doing it as a permanent lifestyle change. Otherwise it will come back. You will see the best result in 12 weeks.

I would pull the rice & pasta like Jessie said, especially at night, you could do carbs during the day.

Thanks guys. I am drinking loads of water, green tea, and sorry to say have not managed to give up fresh coffee, i probably drink 2 cups per day, so not loads. I want to do this as a lifestyle change full stop, no point losing weight then having it all go back on again. I will miss pasta though

You can still eat pasta, just after you get down to your target weight, I eat it once in a while. I also would have clients cut carbs for 2 weeks, then slowly incorporate them back in & see how your body reacts to each. Fibrous carbs are always a good to take in & you should look at glycemic index.

Is the rice you're eating in the evening brown? Brown rice>white rice.

This is my opinion and what works for me, the boyfriend, and several other friends. I won't be offended if you don't agree but it does work and would probably would better for me if I didn't have a massive sweet tooth.

I'd add more veggies. Like, a LOT more, especially leafy greens and cruciferous veggies. Make a big ass salad and make your own dressing with the vinegar of your choice and a half tablespoon of olive oil and whatever seasonings you like; I use pepper and garlic powder. And add more variety. Seriously, going buck wild with the veggies will help you slim up a lot and make you feel great. If you're doing it right you won't have hunger issues, either. I'd also ditch the rice cakes and switch to better carbs like quinoa, it's super quick and easy to prepare. And be thinking ahead about how you're going to maintain your lower weight when you get there. Obviously you can't go back to eating how you were before, so have an action plan. Also give yourself one day a week at a normal calorie level. Constant calorie restriction really isn't that great for you and a normal day will help your body stay stable so it won't cling to what it has due to feeling like it's in starvation mode.

I personally feel that working out as much as you are is overkill. You risk over training and slowing down your progress and you can get better results in less time from interval training or by doing what you're doing more efficiently. Ditch the machines and go for a run outside. Jump rope. Lift heavy weights at low reps. I'd also consider weight training your upper half; you can't really spot reduce and having a little muscle on your top half will help balance out the bottom. For the lower half squats and lunges will firm you up but don't be afraid to try other exercises, like deadlifts.

Also be aware that 80% of your results are going to come from changing your diet, and like others say, it takes time. I keep losing and gaining the same stupid five to ten pounds because of that and it's so annoying to be patient but we'll get there.

    Salad - Cherry Tomatoes, 0.6 tomato/es
    Generic - Asparagus, 3 Spears
    Gareth Fried - Mushrooms - Fried, 10 g
    Half avocado
    Home Made - Stir-Fried Carrots, 0.22 cup
Quorn - Chicken Fillets, 2 fillet
Fresh Garlic - Garlic Clove, 1 Medium Clove (4g)

    Snacks
Fresh Coffee - Fresh Coffee Plus Semi Skimmed Milk (50ml), 2 mug
Robinsons No Added Sugar - Apple and Blackcurrent Squash
    Raisins - Seedless, 1/4 cup
    Bread - Whole-wheat, toasted, 1 slice
    Clover - Marg, 1 g
    Sunpat Crunchy - Peanut Butter, 15 g
    Jams and preserves, 1 tbsp

    TOTAL
    1,185 cals

    Fat was 35 that day

Ugh, I just had an indian curry for a family meal in a restaurant, and that has taken me WAY over my calories for the day. Argh.

Just my opinion but that is to many calories from fat & carbs, you need more protien. Yes calories in minus excersise but there is a difference in quality. You are doing good with the training, you just need to clean it up a little. The effort is there...

Is all that really only 1,185 cals? Damn seems like more. I agree with unbelievable... more protein. Try to have protein with every meal and just some fresh low GI veggies.

    Something like
meal 1 - protein and carbs (i.e. oats with flaxseed meal)
    snack - fresh berries
meal 2 - salmon and salad
    snack - roasted chickpeas
meal 3 - chicken and steamed veggies
snack (only if you feel really hungry) - celery sticks or handful of nuts

You could even do a protein shake or bar for some of your snacks. Also might be obvious but if you are a dancer and you eat "dinner" before work then you probably could have a small amount of carbs because you will be out and moving for 10+ hours afterward its almost as though dinner becomes breakfast...

Also patience... you'll get there! Ive been getting back in shape too and its a long boring process at times but you just gotta keep working and have faith! Ive given myself 6 months to see the full result.

Eat no bread, as as little grains as possible (preferably none). Avoid eating anything really high in fat unless its a fruit/vegetable like coconut or olive. Cut out one meal per day. Decrease portion sizes. Then the weight usually comes right off.
