Default Which preschool for my daughter?

So we have two choices in schools:

A Japanese christian baptist preschool, hours are from 9am-4pm and price is good, facilities are good. We would have to pick her up and drop her off.

A Japanese non-faith based preschool. Facilities are so-so-they are clean, but small (good for japanese standards, eh for US standards). Kind of expensive, but hours are from 830am-6pm. Bus service, so we just go to the gate and pick her up from there.

The problem is that I want to work. I want to tutor/teach, and have an interview next monday. The place is like a sylvan learning center. I sign with them and set my own hours, they hook me up with clients according to my hours. So the more hours I am available, the more I work and earn. Another school also offered me an interview, and it is afternoons, evenings, and weekends mostly.

So when my daughter is in school affects how much I can work, but then again, I have to pay for the extra hours I guess.

Which school would you pick? We have until Thursday to decide (3 days).

Personally I'd go for the first one but if the hours don't match that might be a problem. Maybe if you get that tutoring job you might be able to work later hours?

Are you guys Christian? Does the faith and its presence in curriculum bother you or your husband at all? Something to consider.

Will the money you earn be worth paying for the extra time she is at school?

How you feel about your child being in a faith based school makes a difference I think. Even though I am Christian, I personally avoided putting kiddo in faith based schools because I wanted her to be surrounded by a diverse group of kids, from all different races, backgrounds and religions. I also didnt want to assume she would accept my beliefs as her own...Im on the extreme end of live and let live though, and do not at all have any thoughts one way or the other about someone who puts their child in a religious school... Anyway...left up to me, I would choose the non faith based one, not only for that reason, but also the longer hours and the flexibility you would have for greater earning power, the convenience of the bus service, and also I really liked smaller schools, especially if theres a small teacher/student ratio vs large ones...

Being faith based doesn't bother us. Neither of us are Christian, but it doesn't bother me if she'd be learning the Bible. We teach her our faith at home. She just kinda goes along with whatever, and is pretty flexible about it.

That last question is the big one. But I'm earning nothing now, so it's all speculative.

If it is a nicer place, then I would opt for the faith-based school. Also, 9am-4pm is already a pretty long day for a pre-schooler and I'm not sure how thrilled I would be about having my child (I have 3, including one pre-schooler) shut in a small facility with a bunch of other kids for 9 1/2 hours each day.

    Anyway, just my

Thats a really good point rick... I remember kiddos first preschool was only a half day, from 8-2p if I remember correctly. The next one she went to was a full day one, but they had several campus'... So I dropped her off at her "base" campus, they did a typical half day there, then took a bus to the other campus that was bigger with more facilities, and at the end of the day, took the bus back to their base campus. It was like a mix between school and day camp. Kiddo is 15 now, and she still remembers that place and wants to go back there to visit and wants to send her kids to that one, or one just like it when she has kids (which wont be for another 30 years or so...)

I actually still remember my own preschool too....and how at naptime, my teacher would turn on Days of our Lives and yell at the characters the whole time I anyway didnt like naptime, and couldnt understand why my teacher would watch a show that upset her so much... For the longest, whenever Id happen to hear the theme song to that show, Id get sleepy. Damned Pavlov...hehehe!

Anyway, it is a big decision, both for your convenience, and developmentally for your child...it does make an impact. I hope that you find one you and your child is comfortable with!

So I think you should find out how many hours exactly would be required of you, how much you would make exactly and cross-reference with the hours you are sending her to school as well as the cost. Gotta do the math.

If it is worth it not just for the money but for the experience or simply because you want to do it then go for it! If not, you can look at other possibilities. Do you have an unfinished degree? Military offers spouses scholarships and spouses hardly ever enter for them so it is pretty easy to get that free money. For some you just need to write a good essay, but worth it.

I'm sure you will make the best decision for your family, just remember to not limit yourself on what you can get done (whether its school, work, camming, whatever you like) while she is in school learning. Good luck!

That's a really good point. I hadn't really thought of it that way.

Ugh. Math sucks lol I am going for an info session on a school In a few days, so I will be able to know more then.

I actually did the scholarship thing when I was in Colorado. And yea, I had to write a silly essay, but it got me some $$. My degree is done now, so unless I want continuing education classes or to go to a school to learn Japanese, I'm finished with school for a bit. I wanna go teach some others what I now know!

Did you research home daycares on base? They all have to be licensed and have inspections. They are a bit more flexible and based off income. Do you think you'll be tutoring during school hours?

Request copies of the curriculum and information on each school's goals and go from there. They're both tradeoffs.

I want to be flexible in my hours. I did look at the on-base daycares, both centers and home based. We have even used them already (we get 20 free hours). The problem is none of them are bilingual, neither Spanish nor Japanese nor any other language other than English, and we want our daughter to be bilingual. That is part of the reason I am dedicating myself so hard to learning Japanese as well.

The curriculum in both are equal, the only difference being one also teaches Scripture while the other doesn't.

We decided to go with the more expensive one. That school offers Saturday care (for an additional price of course) in case we want to go somewhere kidless (hardly happens but it's nice to have the option), and also offers extra-curricular activities such as Gymnastics, Karate, Swimming, etc. The bus service is also nice to have.

I don't think my daughter will be staying late. I don't want her be with other care providers like that too long. I'd rather her be with me or my husband, so I'm going to try to be there to pick her up at the bus stop as often as possible. But still, just in case...
