Default Can I cam with this netbook?

Sorry, ladies, but I am a complete idiot when it comes to technology and I am looking for advice.

With all the problems I've been having with SM it made me realize that I need as many back-up options as I can. I am thinking of getting a cheap netbook to cam from in case something happens to my laptop, and/or maybe to broadcast from simultaneously on another site. I don't plan on split camming from the netboook or doing anything fancy with it, it would be strictly for camming on one site at a time without running and programs in the background:

    http://www.amazon.com/NETBOOK-Notebo...653990&sr=8-10

I won't be using the built-in cam and I have a cable internet connection.

So do you think this would work for camming? I would go ahead and get something fancy but 1. I can't afford it right now and 2. I really don't need a second computer, this would be strictly for emergencies. Thanks!

Netbook = baaaad idea for camming. They aren't built to handle it. 256mb Ram? Ugh.

Net/Notebooks are barely designed to handle browsing the web and word processing. It won't cut it at all.

Boo! That sucks. I could have sworn I read about someone camming from a netbook once before. Maybe? Anyone?

I had a friend who cammed with a net book it worked ok.That net book wont work though you need at least 2 gb of ram and a min of a 1.5 GHz possessor. The down side is you wont be able to use the encoder.

    +1

Ive cammed from a netbook, I had to upgrade its RAM to 2, still with it the encoder is out of the question and you software (or know how) to kill every application running to preserve CPU. if you happen to have one and are splitting cams everywhere and have a netbook lying around to add to your roster: sure. Beyond that it isnt sustainable. But if youre looking to *buy* something to cam regularly with? Noooo dont do it. Especially that one is awful. Also note that I have a fast internet connection, not sure if you do but itd need to be to even consider it as even a backup option.

Save up and buy a desktop is my suggestion.

EDIT: I read more of the specs, I dont think it can be emphasized how awful of a netbook this is. id be worried opening even solitaire while watching a youtube video or something, let alone camming. Seriously, dont do it!

Thank you, ladies, for explaining to me WHY that netbook sucks so I know exactly what I need to look for if I do decide to buy one

I want to get out of camming altogether by the end of this year so I don't think it would be a smart investment for me personally to buy another camming computer. The laptop I have now is perfect for my needs, I'm just thinking it may be a good idea for me to have a cheap back-up Just In Case something funky happens to my laptop, so I'd have something to hold me over and continue working on until I could get it fixed.

It's funny you mention my internet speed, mine Used to be very good and then last week something cray cray happened, I don't know, my ISP is sending out a technician tomorrow and I hope they can fix it. My download speed is fine but my upload is serioulsy shit, and when I called my ISP they said they can't get a signal from my modem so who knows. Ah, but I'm going on a tangent here.

A good relatively cheap option is to have a guy or gal build a desktop for you. That's what I did. $600 got me an awesome computer with drool worthy specs. That's like 1/2 the price of a computer with similar specs sold in a retail store.

OJenni, I wish I could be as tech savvy as you. I always read your posts and I think to myself, wow, this girl knows her stuff. Buuuut I on the other hand would have No Clue what to even ask for if I wanted someone to build me a computer

The best place to start with building a desktop machine is newegg.com
It's geek heaven and has some of the best prices on parts, and some of the best parts, on the web.
Your basic machine is power supply, CPU, motherboard, and RAM. Oh yeah and the case.
Don't skimp out on the CPU...this is important as is the amount of RAM. (At this point, get 8 GIGs)
Since you aren't gaming, there are a few things you can skip over such as graphics and sound cards as most are built onto the motherboard.
Because I know that cam girls tend to use a lot of software, get two hard drives and make sure one is a solid state drive. It's a lot faster and you want to be able to separate programs from documents and files.

Aim for speed and the ability to multi task. Newegg has lots of combo deals on computer parts that makes it a lot cheaper to build your own machine. They also have "buy later" options for people with awesome credit (like my husband...not me.) so you can get your parts and make your money back by the time you need to pay for it. It's SOOOO worth it.

Even though many use them, laptops are not ideal for hardcore camming. Firstly, you don't even have the screen space to see what's going on. Secondly, laptops can't handle processing that much at once and tend to overheat and fry your hard drive.

As far as brands, Corsair, Radeon, and ATI all have good products.

@LolaBohemia: You, my dear, are my new tech Goddess When people start trying to explain technical things to me I seriously need to be spoken to like I am 5 years old (which is a damn shame because I'm only 26!) but after reading your explanation I feel like I "get it." Haha now I want to go have a computer built for me, even though I know damn well that I don't need it right now and I can't afford it right now, anyway. I feel a little bit cooler now that I'm not as ignorant on the subject as I was yesterday. Thank you, sweetie!

What about the mini/small desktops that can be attached to a monitor or are able to sit on your desk? I saw these on Walmart, and I realize most aren't sufficient for camming, but does anyone know if one that is? I move around A LOT, and hate using a desktop (mine is rather large). Not to mention, if I move the desktop to my cam room I gotta share it with my hubs.

Short Answer: No, would not work at all for camming. Before you reached a point where you want to throw the machine and everything you've attached to it for not supporting half of your needs as a camgirl, it would probably explode from overheating.

Long Answer: No. What you linked is basically a half machine with no hard drive and everything you'd need to cam would have to be plugged into USB ports. Not only that but from the size of it and it's intention as probably being something like a netbook by running just basic functions or surfing the net, it looks like the machine would overheat in a heartbeat which is one reason why there are parts missing.

    1. There's no hard drive and you'd have to buy an external one if A. you want your computer to have an OS (that machine has no OS installed because there is nothing to install it on) B. You want to have any programs or be able to save anything on the computer. External hard drives can be $100-$200 depending on their storage capacity.
    2. All your peripherals would have to be USB compatible including the external hard drive and any other equipment the machine is missing. It appears to read data off of memory cards only which people aren't really using that much of lately.
    3. As a camgirl you probably need programs that run fast and take up some energy from your CPU. This machine is not made for it. I cam and also record a lot of content and as I await to build my next PC my laptop is running and out of breath.

There are more points but I think you get it...

    Here's what you could do...
Take your current machine and see what makes it so large or heavy. You can purchase another case for it thats smaller and perhaps exchange parts you need to upgrade or don't need at all. Motherboards are what tend to take up the most space in a tower but I would suggest having 2 hard drives and a DVDR drive. You could have a tower that is almost the size of the one you linked but it would be wider...a good thing...so your power supply has a good fan to keep the machine cooled.

Invest in a desk that has wheels on it. Put your machine on a bottom rack and your monitor, cam, mouse, keyboard on the top. Have a hard lined ethernet cord near where you cam the most connected to a router. So when you want to move around...you can unplug the ethernet cable and still have your wifi
(you need a wireless nic, those are $15 since most towers don't have wifi).

    http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCateg...Computer-Cases

Those are cases available. Some have power supplies or other equipment in them already. Around the house we have a Coolermaster, Corsair, and Rosewill and all have been fine.

Also...never get computer equipment from wal-mart...ever. Best option is to buy online and make friends with a nerd who can put it together.

I have cammed on MFC once with my ASUS EeePC netbook and it worked fine except for the screen is so small and I had a hard time getting down to the ban button lol. If you want to cam with a netbook, I recommend that one. There's a version with lots of ram and stuff. I like to use the netbook for taking photos with my cam in places that's difficult to get my desktop to and I attempted to record videos with it and failed miserably.

I have a laptop and a desktop and each serve their purposes well. However doing any sort of intense work requires the desktop.
If you have a netbook and want to cam with it you can hook it up to another monitor if the netbook has a VGA port. I haven't fully used a netbook to see how much it can handle but I am almost certain that splitcamming and running other applications might be a pain.
Atm I am using my laptop for work until the desktop is built. When I'm at my desk I plug it into a larger monitor and use both screens. When I'm around the house, it serves it's portable function.

I started off on Adultwork with a Packard bell netbook and it did the job. Never had a complaint from a custy or issues with the netbook. Hell, I was even using the built in webcam. But it's obviously not the best option and I now have much better equipment. x

OP: You definitely don't want to cam on a PC with Android OS like the netbook you linked to. You probably want Windows, maybe even Mac or Linux, but not Android, which is for phones.

A graphics card will take the load from your CPU when it comes to displaying your video on your own computer screen. This could be useful when streaming with the high-quality encoder, especially from a low powered computer like a netbook, which tends to have trouble with HD video.

If you really want to cam from a netbook, I once had an Asus1201n, I believe the successor to that machine is a 1215n. I cannot recommend the PC for general use, but it did have a graphics card and a dual-core processor, unusual features for a netbook, so for a netbook it was very high powered. If you want a netbook a machine like this might not be a bad idea. I would not try to plug the netbook into a bigger monitor or television however, not even a machine like my Asus, which was sometimes choppy when I tried to play 720p video on my 46" TV with it.
