Thanks for bringing this up. I've always perspired a normal amount, but sometimes my underarms truly do not smell good. I mean like to the point that I have to plan around it sometimes. Not pleasant, but true. I'd tried all of the natural remedies I'd heard of with little luck.

Oddly enough, I read an article last year in Glamour or Cosmo or some such place about natural deodorants for sale. They absolutely raved about this one: I finally ordered some through their etsy shop this spring. HOLY CRAP. I cannot say enough good things about this stuff. It took me a few applications to get used to having to apply it with my fingers, but now I enjoy it. It feels like luxurious lotion for your pits!

I wish I had found this stuff sooner. I love being confident that I am completely stink-free without toxins. Hooray for awesome products!

I've been using essential oils and some essential oils mixed in alcohol to good effect.

Hopefully this will be helpful to someone looking for an alternative to deodorant. One of my friends mom's mentioned that back when she was young they had no deodorant so they would rub a slice of lemon or lime on their armpit and that would kill the odor since the odor is actually caused by the bacteria (which the lemon kills) and not the sweat. Ive tried it and it does seem to work to stop the odor. It worked both on both shaved and unshaved armpits. Won't get rid of sweat stains on your clothes though!

I'm going to give Weleda or Aubrey Organics deodorant spray a try, then report back. From the research I have done, these came highly recommended.

After watching my Mom's best friend suffer from breast cancer, I want to eliminate as much options as possible. Even the oncologist said she can't shake the feeling that deodorant plays a part. Not only did they have to remove both breasts, they removed tumors from under her arms also.

Same, I like the vanilla coconut one! I really want to try the plain vanilla one. I didn't like the original scent.

I've been looking for a natural deodorant as well. TMI but I'm a heavy sweater. I've tried women's deodorant, men's deodorant, Antiperspirant, Certain Dri, Baking Soda, Crystal Rock, and another one from Whole foods but I don't remember the name. None of them worked....I just sweated right through them.

Right now I'm back using commercial deodorant and I really don't like it because of the chemicals. People can say all they want that deodorant doesn't cause cancer/diseases but I find that hard to believe. I'm going to have to try some of these deodorants.

I wonder why certain places smell when they sweat and not others? For instance if my underarms sweat that shit is not pleasant, but when my legs or hands or feet get sweaty they don't smell? I was wondering if it's because the underarms are constantly shaved and applied with chemicals, until I remembered that smelly underarms were why I started using deoderant in the first place as a teen.

Well the thing is, the only way to stop actual sweating is to use chemicals that are supposedly bad for you. I just want something natural and scented, but I don't mind if I sweat.

And I agree with you- I really do think deodorant causes cancer or disease. Because think about it. If you workout a bunch, you tone your muscles. You are doing things to train your body to react a certain way. When you do it long enough, your body listens. So if you put chemicals in the same place everyday, your body listens and does what the chemicals tell it to. And that cannot be good! These are man-made, toxic chemicals!

I've always wondered that too. I mean, I don't even really shave my underarms because I don't grow hair there for some reason, so even that theory wouldn't make sense. I guess we were just designed this way. Random.

I love Kiss My Face Liquid Rock. http://www.kissmyface.com/natural-bo...ll-On-Lavender

I'm not fond of the solid crystal deodorants, but IME this is much more effective.

I didn't think I could possibly contribute to any thread in this forum, but it turns out I can, whoda thunk it I've been using natural deodorants for years, and recently have become a fan of Bubble and Bee's Pit Putty, it smells amazing and natural, and I rarely burn through it (and that's saying something): http://www.bubbleandbee.com/servlet/...nts/Categories

As you can see, they have sprays and sticks, but I'd heard the cream works best (once you get past the psychological trauma of how it's applied). I bought the trial-sized sample pack and love the smell of every single one: http://www.bubbleandbee.com/servlet/...M-Trial/Detail

I found a cream from another company that actually works better for me, that I can't burn through even on very active and stressful days, but the smell is decidedly masculine, whereas the smell of Pitty Putty is just natural and delicious

Goenoveve, those minerals salts are always aluminum salts, and the aluminum is the active ingredient (that is, ultimately the crystal works like any other aluminum-based anti-perspirant by using big aluminum molecules to block the pores, these are not deodorants). The aluminum is not in the form it is in regular antiperspirants (.e.g, aluminum chlorohydate), but in the form of an alum such as potassium aluminum sulphate (that's what a mineral salt is). The crystal manufacturers claim the molecules are so big they don't get absorbed into the body the way traditional aluminum antiperpsirants are, and so don't pose the same health concerns, but really, we don't know for sure. If you're avoiding aluminum, I'd recommend avoiding those crystals also, but in any case, do a little research to decide for yourself (in particular, at least read some articles from folks who believe alum is as bad as the other forms of aluminum).

Okay, at the risk of writing a novel, here's my natural deodorant how-to.

    Contents:
    1. Experiences everyone has switching to natural
    2. Explanation ... maybe
    3. What you should do about it

Experiences everyone has switching to natural deodorants. All of these are very common:
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    1. The first week or two will be the worst. You may need to touch-up more often that first week.
    2. Some of the natural deodorants you try won't work on you at all. Put those aside, don't throw them out.
    3. Some of them will work for a day or two, then stop working. This is VERY common. Put those aside.
    4. Some of them will irritate your skin. Throw those out, you're allergic to the essential oils in them.

    Explanation... maybe:
    ---------------------

I read an article from a scientist (not the industry) in an interesting book about microorganisms, who claimed that as you use deodorants/antiperspirants, some of your natural underarm microorganism ecosystem gets reduced, and other more-hardy species take their place. Those more-hardy species smell more, so you rely more on the deodorant, because now you just smell worse. This can bring about a red queen type situation where you're using stronger and stronger chemicals, until you end up with those insane systemic clinical-strength products with 12%-20% aluminum, or the like. When you go natural, your natural less-smelling ecosystem takes back over, but during that first week, while the micro-war is waging, you'll smell your worst. In addition, the reason sometimes you try a deodorant and it works great for a day or two, and then simply seems to stop working at all, is because for a day some of its ingredients work against the dominant flora/fauna in your underarm ecosystem, but doesn't work against some other species, which takes over and now the new dominant species starts smelling.

What you should do about it:
    ----------------------------

    1. Keep trying natural deodorants. You will find some that work better than others for you. Again, you have to find the ones with ingredients that work for your personal underarm ecosystem, so the ones that work on me may not work best on you, and vice versa.
    2. Mixing two deodorants with different active ingredients can work fantastically well. I'll often mix a spray then a putty, or a stick and a powder, etc.

For me, I found a couple of deodorants that smell nice and last all day on me, provided it's not too stressful a day (e.g., Aubrey Organics spray-on for men, Bubble & Bee putty). But nothing works by itself on super stressful days, and on those days, I wear the two together. And that's why, if you tried a deodorant that didn't seem to work, or only worked for a couple of days, I told you to keep them. I have one unscented natural deodorant that practically does nothing by itself, but when I wear it with the Aubrey Organics, it seems to supercharge it. Based on the science, what I think is happening is, the active ingredients in one of the deodorants is working on some of my underarm ecosystem, and the ingredients in the other is working on all the species in that the first doesn't work on ... and together, I'm getting incredible protection.

Through all of this, the most amazing thing that's happened is: my underarms, which were formerly pretty rank when I used strong anti-perspirants, now don't smell nearly as much, period, just like that scientific paper said would happen.

You'll need to find your own deodorants, but again, for me the Aubrey Organics spray for men works really well (and I've heard the female version in the white bottle is among the best for many women). The Bubble and Bee deodorants work great on me too, especially those in the form of putty (the sprays and sticks don't last as long, because they're missing some ingredients to get the deodorants in those forms). I found that tea tree oil based deodorants were like a miracle on me, working incredibly well, but I'm allergic to them and would eventually end up with a rash, so I can't use them. On stressful days, I can mix any two from my collection, even including natural deodorants that didn't seem to work on my well, and get supercharged protection. I realize strippers have a whole 'nother level of protection needed, being physically active 8+ hours at a time, plus often engaged in stressful conversations with strangers; then again, I'm a guy and formerly stank, and the fact that naturals work incredibly well for me should give you hope.

Didn't mean to write a book, hope you found this interesting!

Be prepared, ladies. This is kind of a long one.

As for simple deodorizing methods: I hear lots of good things on natural forums about crystals, but be certain that they are ammonium alum or preferably potassium alum. Alum and aluminum are not exactly the same thing, despite being very similar. Aluminum compounds in mass antiperspirants are designed to be small molecules that are easily absorbed into the skin and sweat glands to effectively plug them. Alum molecules are much larger and are typically not absorbed into the skin, meaning they just act on killing surface bacteria, but there is the potential they could be absorbed. This is something to keep in mind if you are concerned about aluminum in deodorant.
Another one that I didn't see mentioned here is stainless steel, sorta like this- www.deodorworks.com Haven't tried it myself, but there are a lot of reviews to be found. I also just used a link for one that's specifically marketed as a deodorant; you can find lots of stainless steel "soap" bars online for a lot cheaper than the De Odor Works. It's supposed to neutralize the VOCs that cause odor, but it apparently doesn't actually do anything about the bacteria itself.
Antibacterial substances like coconut oil and honey? They all get a thumbs up from me, even if I haven't personally made the switch to homemade deodorants yet, because I do use them on other areas of my body with a lot of success.

As for "antiperspirant" methods: There are sooooo many out there that can be used in a massive variety of ways. There are commercial body dusting and baby powders that you can use with varying degrees of efficacy. Some people swear by a very small amount of diaper/nappy rash cream rubbed in very well. (For what it's worth, I found a flesh colored "butt paste" years ago that worked wonders for assne, so I'm pretty sure using it on your pits would work fairly well. Damn, I need to find more of that stuff.) You can use dry clay powders like bentonite. Arrowroot is supposed to be the bomb. And there's always the old standbys of baking soda and corn starch.

For those interested, here's a modified "antiperspirant" recipe I'm planning to try:

    2 Tablespoons beeswax
    2 Tablespoons shea butter
    2 Tablespoons coconut oil
    2 Tablespoon arrowroot
    2 Tablespoon baking soda
    1/2 Teaspoon vitamin E oil
    Essential oil to preference

If you don't own a double boiler, you can use a heat-resistant glass bowl in a pot of simmering water. Begin by melting the beeswax because it takes longest, adding the shea butter about half way and coconut oil near the end, stirring to combine. Remove from heat. Stir in baking soda, arrowroot, and oils until you get a creamy uniform consistency. Pour into container of choice, or empty deodorant tube. Let set at room temperature.
The vitamin E is primarily to aid in preservation, but works well with the shea butter to nourish pits that might be stressed from hair removal. You can fiddle with the beeswax content to find a harder/softer consistency. If you don't have or can't find arrowroot, or are too sensitive for baking soda, you can substitute either with cornstarch. Pro-tip: don't waste time stressing about natural, "aluminum free" baking soda. Baking soda doesn't contain aluminum. However, if you're worried about chemical processing for whatever reason strikes your fancy, then go ahead and invest in natural sodium of bicarbonate brands like Frontier or Bob's Red Mill.
Exotic dancing is like any other job.
If you work in an office, you wear dress shoes and a suit.
If you work in a restaraunt, you wear skid resistant shoes and a uniform.
If you work in a strip club, you wear 7" stilettos and lycra g-strings.

Just be careful if any of you use self tanners. I use a vegan one and I try not to get it in my pits and some how it will still slide in there making my pits smell aweful for a day or two. No matter what kind of deodorant I use. I wipe with a vegan mint wipie 2 times the next day to get rid of the smell.

Right now I'm using one by queen helene mint julep. It lasts about 24 hours on me. I love it so far.

I just bought the lavanilla one to try.

Naida, here are the ingredients of the Bubble & Bee Pit Putty that have worked so well for me, big overlap with your contents! This is obviously the geranium lime flavor. Anyway, if you want to see if this formula works for you, before you start cooking your own batch, B&B also has little trial sizes...

    Organic arrowroot powder,
    organic shea butter,
    organic coconut oil,
    organic sunflower oil,
    (aluminum-free) baking soda,
organic lime essential oil, organic geranium essential oil.

Thanks, Radius! I wasn't particularly interested in trying a brand before you posted the ingredients, but I'll probably try out their JasMint with baking soda now. I'll eventually definitely be making the switch to homemade because I have a variety of reasons for preferring DIY beyond just ingredients, but B&B seems like it would be a perfect intermediary for me while I come off of "traditional" mass market antiperspirant.
