Default 5htp/stress eze and other otc anxiety meds

I have had a stressful few weeks and I really need some advice. It seems I am always stressed/anxious, I have lived this way for the past 5-7 years...I have accepted it that it is just a part of who I am. Long story short, the past few weeks have been above and beyond stressful!

I want to start taking something that will help me releive some of this anxiety. I really do not want to dive straight into perscription drugs, although I have had great results with them in the past...I don't want to have to "use" something on a constant basis, or get into the habit of "changing my frame of mind" to work. I don't want to cover up my symptoms, making myself feel better but never getting to the source of the problem or fixing it and in my experience with anti anxiety meds, this is exactly the case.

I get excercise, eat healthy, etc..the only thing I really have not tried on a regular basis is meditation. It is impossible for me to meditate when I am a ball of raw nerves. Id like to get to the point where I can really relax and meditate some day and I am constantly learning how to manage my stress better. I have tried these ways, so I am not jumping right into OTC med experimentation without trying the very basics of stress management first. I really just need a little extra help from my pill friends lol, without being on something that can get me totally ripped or addicted.

I have been reading alot about 5-htp/stress eez. It seems it could really help someone like me out. I have tried valerian root, and it did nothing for me. I have also tried st. johns wort, again nothing for me. It seems 5HTP/stress eze will get the job done without such harsh side effects or possibility of addiction. When I have been on anti anxiety meds, I do get a little sleepy, but It seems I am alot more clear headed it also seems that the petty little things do not bother me to the extent they would without the meds. I want this clear-headed, petty bs doesnt bother me frame of mind back, and excercise, meditation, valerian root and st johns wort just don't do it for me in this department.

Has anyone here used 5htp/stress eze or similiar otc meds with good results? Does it get you dopey feeling? How exactly did it help you? Do you prefer this over prescription meds and why?

    Helpppp!!! LOL

I've struggled with major depression & anxiety thru out my adult life. I tried the OTC herbal things that you talked about and never had good results with them. I had a very bad allergic reaction to St. John's Wort, was almost life threatening. I take prescription meds which has totally changed my life for the better. Since you don't want to take prescription meds, you may want to try different amino acids & Omega 3 fatty acids. They are the building blocks of neurotransmitteres which are responsible for creating the feel good chemicals in our brain. Another thing that has made a huge difference in my life is an artificial sunbox. It's a light you can buy which mimics the sunlight but blocks the UV rays. My doctor told me our brain produces more serotonin in response to the sunlight. If you do try this, get one that says 10,000 lux. I got mine off eBay for $80 and was the best investment I've done for myself. I seriously can't live without it now, it's awesome! Hope this helps!

If you're in a place where Tryptophan is available (it was blocked by the FDA for the longest time for the most retarded of reasons) then I would suggest going with that rather than 5-htp which I believe is just a precursor or just partially tryptophan.

How much Vitamin D3 do you take? I think most people are deficient in Vitamin D (take it as D3 since D2 doesn't hardly absorb) since we spend so much time indoors, and now wear a bunch of SPF. You can megadose up to 50,000 IUs a couple of times, and then bring it back down to 20,000-30,000 IUs a day (keep in mind, the body produces like 20,000 from fifteen minutes of hanging out in the sun depending on where you are in the world.) D3's pretty important and can affect a lot of the systems.

I've known people who've done the lightbox or the blue lights, and said it helped. If I wanted to design the best little "space" I might consider doing that plus adding infrared lights.

I'm sure there's a bunch of stuff you've looked at on earthclinic, like cold showers, but other than that, I would say maybe you should be exercising to exhaustion or close as you can get a few times a week.
so long as it's not going to send you into a panic attack to be super out of breath, this might be a good lead in to meditation as you're doing a cool down. And yoga is also really good because if you have a hard teacher, you HAVE to focus on holding a hard position and that is kind of a meditation by itself after awhile. You don't have to meditate by sitting still and zoning out. You can meditate through action so long as it's repetitive enough that your brain is able to disengage and let the body do the actions.

You can do this by going on really long bike rides that don't have you stopping for lights a whole lot, where you can just focus on the road immediately in front of you and just keep peddling.
You can start memorizing some martial arts or tai chi katas and go to the park and work through them at various speeds.

you can get creative about how to meditate in motion.

^ ah yes, the zen of housecleaning-- so perfect when you can do that! I love doing that, but the first 15 minutes or so it's torture for me!

I think it was an article in Oprah, but they were interviewing a nun at some convent and she was talking about how she made cleaning her prayer.
Sounds strange at first, but the article was getting at the point that most people hate housework since you have to do it all the time. But really
making it an action of, well ***dedication*** for lack of the better word, worked better than hating housework. I seem to love dinner party dishes
but hate day to day dishes and I think it's because I can do the same repetitive motions over and over for a good hour or two rather than twenty minutes.

I have used 5HTP and L-tyrosine in cycles as needed for about two years. It does help immensely but you have to be very vigilant about your dosage! Start SMALL, like HALF the recommended dose. DO NOT buy brand name bullshit compounds, go to a vitamin or supplement store and buy plain old 5-HTP. IF YOU FEEL STRANGE AT ALL STOP USING IT. Do not use in in conjunction with ANY OTHER DRUGS, particularly BENZOS, MAOIs OR SSRIs. If you're going to use 5HTP, make sure these are the ONLY things you are using. You don't want to end up with serotonin syndrome. 5HTP and l-tyrosine will also INCREASE your sensitivity to stimulants, even caffeine.. so NO CAFFEINE WHILE USING IT. I made that mistake once and I'll never forget it. I go off my ADD meds for a week before I even attempt to start taking a cycle of 5-HTP.

If used properly and cautiously, these substances can be very beneficial, but I really can't stress it enough how vital it is to use them RIGHT.

    Hey Mediocrity--
I took some caffeine around 3 pm and just took some 5htp 50mg not knowing there was a problem with caffeine and it.
Do you think the 6 hour spacing will mean it won't give me side effects?

50mg is a pretty low dose but it depends on how long you've been taking it, aka how much is built up in your bloodstream. You may not get side effects, but I wouldn't do that again. You'll know if there is pretty immediately though- I drank half a cup of coffee after taking 100mg daily for a few weeks and got such a huge rush I thought I was going into anaphylactic shock. Head pounding, very elevated pulse, double vision, sweating, dizziness.

yeah, while I do have caffeine from time to time, it's a lot less than it used to be, and I wouldn't stack it like that.
I will probably, knowing me, still have caffeine, but space it out from my 5htp and melatonin by several hours to
try to avoid an interaction like that. I'll write back if I end up having one anyway.

I've taken Rhodiola Rosea before and had some luck with it. The effects weren't as strong as I would have liked, but I bought a cheaper brand at the time. I've been thinking of going back to it lately, but am looking into other options, as it can cause some stomach issues for sensitive users.
