Hey ladies, I have noticed a lot of posts saying things like "what should I ask my esthetician" etc, so here I am! I am licensed in Texas, and work part time at a waxing studio as well as I used to work at a day spa in Dallas, with a little laser experience. Ask away!

Are facials and body treatments done in a clinic worth it, or can you get the same results at home in your opinion? I've always gotten the same results at home.

Also, how do you stop the breakouts around your eyebrows after having them waxed?? No matter what I do before or after getting them done, I still get those tiny pimples around where they were waxed.

I would honestly say that some things are worth the money, and some things aren't. My spa would kill me for saying this, but a facial is really just using a series of products in sequential order. The difference is that at the spa there is pretty music, some massage, and a nice atmosphere. Most professional facials include cleansing, extractions, a mask, an exfoliating treatment, moisturizer, and massage. Minus the massage, you can do all of that at home with quality products! (Ulta and Sephora usually carry the best masks and at home peels in my opinion) I wouldn't try extractions if you don't know how to do it, you can end up bruising your skin, but you can certainly steam your face in the shower or buy an at home steamer, cleanse (at most spas now they use the Clarisonic cleansing brush and you can certainly use that at home), exfoliate with a scrub or at home peel, and either buy a good mask or make one using natural ingredients, finish with moisturizer and you're good to go! I personally am never going to pay for a professional facial again. As for body treatments, some things are worth a professional, like waxing, spray tan, any laser treatment or heavy duty facial peel (which is only available at a spa or doctor's office anyway), or injectables obviously. I'm personally not a fan of body contouring; I've taken a class on it and I didn't think it was worth it, exercising and eating healthy will do much more for your body shape!

For the breakouts after waxing question: I tell clients to ALWAYS cleanse their face IMMEDIATELY after having them waxed (upper lip if you got that waxed) with a gentle cleanser, nothing with acid in it. It's very important to go home and cleanse, as this will rinse off all the pre and post wax solution your esthetician used plus any wax residue. Make sure your esthetician IS using a pre and post solution, at a lot of cheaper places they just put the wax of, rip it off, and don't clean the area at all and that can definitely cause breakouts. Use a small amount of benzoyl peroxide spot treatment immediately on the area after you cleanse, and once a day for about a week after you wax, even if you haven't broken out yet, this will help prevent breakouts. Only use it once a day and just a small amount, you don't want to irritate your skin. Try cleansing immediately after plus spot treating the area. If that doesn't work I would a) try a new place, it could be a reaction to the wax they use, b) if you're really having serious problems try threading or sugaring instead of waxing, I'm a big fan of sugaring, they use a sticky sugar solution instead of wax, it's a lot gentler on the skin.

Thanks for answering our questions carmela! I was wondering what do you think of lymph massage? Is it anti-aging? Do you have good anti-aging tips? Thanks! Hmm maybe I'll have to try sugaring? I've given up on waxing as it turns me red for a whole day afterwards.

When it comes to lymph drainage or any other type of massage, I would say it can have an *indirect* anti-aging effect, and what I mean by that is no, massage will not lessen or get rid of wrinkles, sun spots, age spots, saggy skin etc, *however* massage can help greatly in giving your overall skin a "glow" which helps to make you look better, as well as regular massages can greatly reduce your stress, which absolutely makes a difference in your skin! For *direct* anti-aging treatments, meaning products or services that WILL make a noticeable difference in wrinkles, saggy skin, sun spots, etc I would recommend the following:

Products: Retin A is typically the gold standard in anti-aging treatment, it's been proven in clinical trials time and time again to visibly reduce wrinkles, fade acne scars and sun spots, improve the overall texture of skin, and keep acne from forming. Retin A is truly amazing; it also goes by the name Renova. You can get a prescription for Retin A from a dermatologist, and they'll tell you how to use it. If you're not ready to try it, try a RETINOL from the drugstore; retinols are not pure vitamin A so they are much gentler albeit less effective. I would recommend the drugstore brand RoC for retinols.

AHAs and BHAs: AHA stands for alpha hydroxy acid, which are acids that improve the texture and look of your skin. Some common anti-aging examples are glycolic, lactic, tartaric, and malic acid. All of these are natural and come from fruits like apples and lactic acid comes from milk. I would recommend using an exfoliating mask or scrub with one or a few of these acids in it about twice a week, and if you're serious about anti-aging a cleanser with these ingredients about 3 times a week, the rest of the time use a gentle cleanser like Cetaphil. BHA stands for beta hydroxy acid, which is salicylic acid which is used to treat acne.

Peptides: Peptides are chains of amino acids that have been shown to plump up sagging skin. Try a serum that you apply every day that has peptides.

Sunscreen: it's cliche, but a broad spectrum UVA UVB moisturizer that's at least SPF 30 must be worn every single day rain or shine!!!

    Treatments:

Chemical peels: A spa can perform light chemical peels in a series with the acids mentioned above; a dermatologist can perform heavy duty acid peels. Peels retexturize and lighten your skin.

Injectables: Botox, fillers, etc. I've never had these done, but they do work but I think moderation is key.

Laser and light: Laser treatments like Fraxel can work wonders on wrinkles, spots, and saggy skin, I had Fraxel done on some acne scars and they completely disappeared. Light treatments like IPL help to treat sun spots and acne scars. These treatments can be a bit expensive, but they do work.

Microdermabrasion: I'm not a fan, I think its outdates and hurts the skin. I've never had a client that saw big improvement.

    Hope this helps!!!!!

What is the best laser treatment for light genetic forehead wrinkles? Or should I just wait like 5 years and start botox? Right now my treatment is having bangs lol.

I was using a medication for my acne, and now that most of my acne is gone, there is a bunch of acne scarring on my face. The acne scarring is red and flat. It looks like acne, but it feels flat. My skin is sensitive and really dry. How can I lighten the acne scars without irritating my acne and without breaking out? Also, do you recommend using a serum for anti-aging if I'm in my early 20's, or should I wait until I'm older? Thanks so much for answering our questions!!

Edit: Deleted second question about anti-aging because I just realized you already answered it. It was very helpful. I always suspected that microdermabrasion caused more harm than good.

    Ooh, thanks for doing this!

Are there any negative sides to using anti-aging products, assuming no allergies to the products? I'm barely 22 and some of my friends say it's "bad" for me to use anti-aging products when I don't have wrinkles or anything yet. They don't have any logic for that stance though, so I don't understand the notion. Also, are there any sunblocks you recommend for sensitive skin? I live in Houston and have fair skin, so wearing sunblock is necessary, but it causes my skin to break out sometimes. One more: are there any drugstore brand face washes you recommend?

The color and appearance of the hyperpigmentation changes depnding on where im at in my cycle. What can I do about this? Thanks

I also have problems with hyperpigmentation. I can pretty much compare my cheeks to the outside of an orange peel.

No and I never will. The long-term health side effects aren't worth it.

What's the best peel or laser for indented acne scars? I've been getting glycolic, lactic, and mandelic acid peels and using retin-a (everything appropriately spaced out, of course) and it's all doing a great job at anti-aging and keeping my skin clear but I still have the scars and I'd kill to get rid of them. I've had TCA peels or laser recommended to me but I'm hesitant to do laser because I've heard that it can damage the layer of fat on the face that helps maintain youth and therefore speeds aging. Opinions? They drive me nuts even though I can hide them with makeup and I want to get rid of them around my next birthday in a few months.
