If you are willing to do for one year what other's won't, you can spend a lifetime doing what other's cant.
You ever watch TLC's My Crazy Obsession? In one episode, there was a British couple who collect silicone love dolls (and blow-up dolls). They don't have sex with them, they just collect them. They have over 240 of them, and they've spent about $150,000 on them.
They name them and everything.

thats on the border of creepy and bizzare/facinating
I see no problem here. The're not forcing their views on anyone. They bother no one.

I'm actually in love with this documentary...
I caught it when it first aired years ago; very fascinating, saddening, but weirdly uplifting too, for a few reasons.
I feel for these men. It breaks my heart that some people use these dolls primarily because they cannot find real female companionship; it loudly alerts to me to the extreme value of female companionship too - sometimes I feel that we women have no idea what we actually mean to men, or we take ourselves for granted when men would pay thousands even for a doll resembling us. It alerts me to the value of kindness, care, integrity from myself as a woman (I hate saying "as a woman" lol, but I feel it applies here more literally) to men.
So many women complain about men - about their conduct, their views, habits, etc - but there are so many men who are not even a speck on the radar to women despite their efforts and own kindness, who won't even be shown so much as respect or a chat. Nothing at all. But I find it uplifting that the replacement seems to work well for them and bring them as much happiness as a doll could.
I also am intrigued by the dolls themselves! I collect Monster High dolls and I've wanted to collect ball-joint dolls (too expensive for me!) so I can't help but be really taken by the incredible amount of work the manufactures have put into Real Dolls... Amazing. I wish I could work at their warehouse!
Best line: "I'm running out of vaginas..."
I find it interesting as well. At first I felt sorry for the one guy but then I felt so touched by his attention that he gave his doll. He looked so nervous when the she went away. Like awww 3 weeks and how when she returns it will be like a "honeymoon". Now the other guy that had a girlfriend I felt was a tad selfish. 8 dolls at what 48,000 pounds? Plus he had them stuffed around the house like trash. Just looked bad that he wasn't taking care of them. I wasn't surprised that his girlfriend left. I actually felt sorry for her coming over and seeing all those dolls on his bday like that. It seemed like he was trying to be mean on purpose. He's destined to be alone or he'll be back on one of those dating sites look for someone that can actually respond to him.

to incantatious: what a sensitive and intelligent response to that feature. I had just read over the article and hadn't watched the program. I will be sure to now... I guess what it made me think of is that the negative experiences we recieve at the club, at home, or on the street from rude men, seemingly eclipse the efforts and kindness of some of these lonely men. (For example, a comment meant in true sincerity" you look great today" heard after a nasty customer insulted your looks, may be percieved as sarcasm, and you recoil in contempt. This is touching in an unexpected way. However, I've had a mild fear of manequins since I was a little kid- my irish great grandma had this very scary life size department store manequin in her spare bedroom and I didnt like going in the room. But overall, I enjoyed this story.
