Default A little website I made for exotic dancers

I made this website a little while ago to help exotic dancers who are considering leaving the industry/retiring. It is not meant to demean sex work, in fact, I still do my domination with that client and will be in the strip clubs from time-to-time for the next couple of months. I made it because there is a lack of non-religious information that demonizes sex work online and I wanted to provide links and phone numbers for girls who want to leave, need support while in the industry, or are victims of sexual violence or physical abuse (whether related to work or not). It's a work in progress but I hope it helps someone.

P.S. I was sure to include a link to StripperWeb on my website!

On paragraph number eight, I found this typo: It's hurt me, it's taught me, it's shaped me. You just write "it hurt me, it taught me, it shaped me".

BTW, aside from that minor typo, it was an amazing blog post. I hope you reach out to a lot of other dancers that are contemplating in getting out.

I wrote "It's" as in the contraction for it has.

i.e. "It has hurt me. It has taught me. It has shaped me".

The font...... the font..... oh, the font..... consider changing it to one of these.

    Arial
    Courier New
    Georgia
    Helvetica
    Times New Roman
    Trebuchet MS
    Verdana

The font & color make the site seem unprofessional and (just sayin') hard to read.

I was hoping for positive feedback or constructive criticism on the content, not on the webpage design. I can go back and correct the format anytime. The quality of the information is more important to me! Or if you feel something should be added let me know.

Nice job on the site. I agree with Sophia_Starina on changing the font, though. There's psychology behind website aesthetics, and I think by doing so, your content will be taken more seriously.

I like the non-religiousness of it and how you repeat that stripping is OK and you're very non-judgmental, and how you even included a religious link (iamatreasure).

You know I am a word person; I read far too much. But even for me, the website is a little too wordy. Main page is good. Support page and Getting Out page could be shorter (by shorter I mean less wordy). You repeat yourself from the main page a little bit, you could probably cut some out. Maybe a paragraph or so. Help NOW should be shorter-if a person is looking for immediate help she or she is not going to want to read that much.

I would post the links at the top of the page. Makes it more accessible.

I like how you put yourself out front on the main page. Gives you some credibility before people start browsing.

What a wonderful site for women who need help. Love the content. Only thing I agree on is it was a bit hard to read due to the font type, but as you said, super easy to fix. Awesome that you made this!

Much, much better! I love the websites and hotlines you recommended on your website. Perhaps you can create a Q&A segment on your website. You can also take original threads (you may need permission from the OP) that offer great info off stripper web, minus all the replies.

Okay, I added a page called "preserving yourself"

I credited you. Read over it and let me know if that is OK.

Is there any way you can create a comment box on each page? It would be nice for those who read to be able to add input into what they read. It also gives you an opportunity to answer questions and expand your site if needed.

I chose not to put a comment box because of trolling and rude comments. I don't have time to watch the website often. I provided forum links and resources for girls who need to vent or get advice.

I think you did a good job and I hope you consider what I mention to make the site memorable and easier to navigate.

Constructive criticism aims to show that the intent or purpose of something is better served by an alternative approach. In this case, making the criticism is not necessarily deemed wrong, and its purpose is respected; rather, it is claimed that the same goal could be better achieved via a different route. Constructive criticisms are often suggestions for improvement - how things could be done better or more acceptably. They draw attention to how an identified problem could be solved, or how it could be solved better.

    1. I feel that the title of your site is misleading. It is called "Truth About Exotic Dancing", but your content deals with the negative aspects of the job and it's relation to sexual abuse, exploitation, & violence. You also dedicate sections to "getting out" of the industry. The truth of the matter is that stripping is both good and bad. It is *true* that there a pros as well as cons. Am I right?

    2. When I click on "Home" in the navigation bar, I'm directed to an autobiographical account of your experience in the industry. This section would be better titled "My Story" or "About Me" or even "About".
The section titled "Home" should probably consist of a simple mission statement and a contents page of articles (maybe a blog format? where the reader can see the topic titles, images, and then click on a little link where it says "read more...").

    3. "A Resource for Exotic Dancers Past or Present" could be more prominent. It doesn't fit into your color scheme and blends into the banner image. Also, the banner image could be improved.

    4. Make the links to resources clickable. Someone in a crisis situation may not want to cut & paste. *Kind of Important*

First off, I am very aware of what constructive criticism is, English is definitely my strong point. Below I will respond individually to your input, keeping in mind I explained to you previously that I didn't want CSS/HTML advice, rather advice about the actual content.

    1. There is more than one mention I make that sex work is OK as long as you are safe and not mentally damaged by it.

    2. The home page's header says "let me tell you about myself and my involvement in exotic dancing". I do indicate its an about me. The index bar is at the top, and I explained in the home page why I made the website "to help other women considering leaving the industry".

    3. I'm not concerned about the aesthetic appearance of the website, its informative and that was my goal. Moreover, i like the banner and layout.

    4. I'll work on making the links clickable but I doubt copying and pasting would deter anyone from visiting.

And also I call it the truth about exotic dancing because there are uglies in this industry and they are not talked about or are downplayed. I don't know of any dancers who have never felt violated by a customer, in some form, although the frquency and intensity varies. Very few women make stripping a career and I can tell you physical appearance has little bearing on that because there are no shortage of plastic surgeons or dives that hire mature dancers. It's because the industry is not all positive and someone has to tell about the negatives in a non judgmental way. There has to be a voice for women in the industry.

There is a reason girls get "burn out" which is a nice way of saying sick of feeling tired, sore, working weird hours, and dealing with unsavory customers. It's a real, factual experience almost all dancers go through. And that's how I feel and why I made that website.

I'm sick of everyone saying there is nothing wrong with stripping. There is something wrong with stripping when you look at the whole picture, and before you rip my head off keep reading. The problem is that strippers are treated unfairly, stigmatized, stereotyped, harassed, assaulted, and on drugs. Are all strippers raped or on drugs? Not at all, but there's enough to make it an issue. Ladies need to stand together and say NO to unfair, unsafe, and illegal practices at work, we need to make sure the clubs remove and ban customers who threaten the physical or emotional well being of us, we need to arrive at work sober and stay sober the whole time, every time. We need to quit making these club owners millionaires and accepting third rate treatment. Accepting these injustices only dooms future strippers... Our sisters, daughters, friends, grandkids. This is OUR industry and we need to stand up and fix it instead of bitching on stripperweb about our mean managers or disgusting experiences. Then, and only then, will we be free and liberated women. For now, the cycle will perpetuate into darkness until someone takes a stand.

I feel you on this Laurisa and I been thinking a lot about this lately. Started dancing 12 years ago. Lately I been thinking, damn, I used to work 6 or 7 days a week back in the day and have the time of my life, $$$, LOVED my job, back then it was a huge deal if a custy like brushed your leg or something lol. I was never "burned out", not really badly. 2 nights ago I saw another dancer blatantly rubbing a custys dick with her hands, like an over the pants hand job, while she was doing her dance right next to me in the LD area..and yea these days I get burned out fast and it happens often. Bouncers and management dont give a damn about touching in the LDs and dont help us at all, they used to kick customers out for even thinking about touching us.
I dont want this to be another blabla about the good old days tho!!!! But lately ive been thinking ok whats going on with stripping these days. I work with girls who dont have their own cell phones, dont have cars, are not breaking $100 a night...But even for the top earners who DO make good money (these days in this economy), who is having the last laugh when we compare our earnings to the custys who pay us (rich, professional e.g. lawyers doctors businessmen etc) or the clubs who we pay. ???!!!!!!!!!!!!!! dont know im confused all i know is we are definitely being scammed and yes i wish to hell something could be done to change this but what???!!!!!!!!!

How r we supposed to "fix it" if u r encouraging women to leave the business? To those of us who want to stay in the industry your site is rather insulting although i think ur intention may be in the right place.

I like your website a lot. It's refreshing to see something that doesn't glorify stripping or come at it with a religious angle. It can be a rough job for a lot of girls, it was for me. I dont think there's anything wrong with exotic dancing or nudity, but there is something wrong with the strip club business model, the more girls know the truth the less naive ones will get sucked in for the wring reasons.

How exactly does my website insult you? Did I ever say it's bad to be a stripper? No, to the contrary I said it is OK to be a stripper. If you are offended because I created a website to help dancers then you must have selective hearing. I'm still a stripper myself, and it does not insult me to get non-judgmental advice about leaving the industry.

I still dance, usually 1-2 times a month for 5 hours. So I'm in the clubs 5-10 hours a month now. It won't be long before I stop going altogether.

And as I said before, you are right, there is nothing wrong with stripping, but there IS something wrong with how strip clubs operate in that dancers take the brunt of the abuse and give large amounts of money to the clubs in exchange for third rate treatment. If you are considering stripping you have to know what you are up against so you don't lose yourself in the process of finding out.
If you are willing to do for one year what other's won't, you can spend a lifetime doing what other's cant.
