I'm doing it in reverse. I did the 9-5, dealing with co-workers and I've had enough. I'm going to be a 'born again' web cam girl. going back to a former life of nude modeling (back when I did it, was before the web cam era)

I've got a lot of friends that are/were dancers and one in particular made sure that she made investments and bought a house while still dancing. She's doing a lot better than me!!!!

    What?

Also, who said anything about shame??? (I'm too tired of copying quotes.... it's in the last sentence of your response though)
Im usually very good at keeping track of what people say that I reply too! For clarification, I was replying to the person who said they had a major issue with strippers blatant disregard of the glaring fact that the customers that come to clubs, blow thousands, and have 9-5 jobs.

My point was that, the fear of moving into a different career is not showing disregard for the customers and whatever they do to spend the money they have.

I didnt quote or accuse anyone as saying anything about shame, I was just saying, in my own words...I do think it would be a shame for someone to not go after what they want because they are afraid. I dont think that fear of a 9-5 is as dramatic as soul crushing death sentence or whatever as someone described Its just a matter of getting used to a new way of life and making a living.

LoL! I know what you mean..Im no superstar in this industry by any stretch of the imagination, but of all my friends who did everything on the "straight and narrow" they all complain abotu thier jobs, how they arent even working in the field they got their degree in, never have time for anything, have to request time off if they want to anything, and they usually dont because they dont really have the money to. But not so much cause they arent making enough, but cause they did the whole american dream thing...have the car payments, the expensive rent, one friend of mine has a mortgage... And yeah, a little part of me is like...okay, you sure you wanna sign up for all of that?!

But yeah, I have done this so long...and by the time I do get my degree and move on, I would have been in the industry almost 20 years. Thats a long, freaking, time...aye! I say go for it, make as much as you can...dont skate through it like I did

True. But most people have several careers throughout their lifetime. I know high-level attorneys that became organic farmers, high-level managers that became shoe designers, architects that became christian missionaries. I know people that were involved in "questionable" activities that went on to found historical societies/philanthropic organizations. I know strippers that went on to work for the United Nations and strippers that became doctors, or businesswomen, or life coaches. Seriously.

I'm in the midst of transitioning now. And you are right, it is hard.

I haven't closed the stripping chapter of my life but I know that down the road, the chapter will close on its own.

Keep in mind that you have years of experience in high end sales, public speaking, and entertainment.

    Use that to your advantage.

When you're done paying your dues (as anyone in an entry level occupation does) you'll be on a solid trajectory to accomplish what you want.

I think the major hangup Kaylee84 and ladies of a similar mindset have is that they won't be able to maintain a standard of living that they're accustomed to. That is what savings and investments are for. That is what living beneath your means is for. If the goal is there and you have your eyes on the prize isn't it worth the temporary sacrifice?

    Best of luck.

I get that lots of career dancers are intimidated by all the rules and regulations of a "straight" job. I get that.
    BUT

Career dancers should understand that dancing as a career does have a time limit and should be preparing for that transition throughout the last couple years of their dancing career imo. You can easily dance for 10+ years...so it's not like this transition is sneaking up on anyone.

A lot of girls seem to have the mentality that they are going to have to take some shitty, entry-level job upon leaving dancing. Why? If you are around 30 and guess you have about 5 years of dancing left why is your butt not headed to uni or college or out to get that entry-level job NOW while you can still dance for extra income to supplement that shitty salary while you work your way up the straight career ladder so that when you are forced to leave the industry because of age/deteriorating looks/burnout/health issues, you already HAVE a decent job because you put in your "dues" while you were still dancing. Hence, pas de shitty entry-level job + scariness. Duh? Even if you dance full time, there's no reason that most girls wouldn't be able to manage some part-time clerial position or internship a couple days a week at the same time, which can turn into a decent job down the road.

I think it is part of a career dancer's job to plan her exit strategy well, and space it out over time to avoid this anxiety that comes with doing a 180 on your life all at once.

    Let me clarify:

Strippers seem to ignore the fact that their nightly earnings (often) come from customers that work 9-5 jobs.

If a 9-5'er can spend $XXXX? every once in a while (or monthly, or every 2 weeks, or weekly, or 4-times a week) on strip clubs while supporting their family, paying their mortgage, paying for their clothing and cars, etc. It is obvious that 9-5 jobs pay well enough. Strippers get a percentage of the wages 9-5'ers earn. Yet strippers seem to fear 9-5 jobs and assume that 9-5's automatically mean less $$$.

    I just don't think it's true.

After the low-wage entry-level gauntlet, a career can be more profitable than stripping.

That's what I was saying before. Sorry for the confusion.

That right there describes my 4 year plan

I do have a few credits already, but I discovered CLEP, for anyone who is interested in going back to school, have it in them to do some self study and dont have their Bacchelors yet, you can take CLEP and also another type of test (starts with a D...I forget the name) and test out of the general classes. Not only is it cheaper (like around here, to take a cc class is about $300 a credit, the test is about $100) and you save time...instead of going to class for a full semeseter, you study for the test and its over with in 2 hours. Counts as full credit as long as its not a test for a class that counts towards your degree major.

With my current credits, some CLEP tests and finishing up my AA and transferring to a 4-yr, I should be able to get my bachelors in 3 years. Ill bust butt to get myself an internship while Im working on my BA, and hopefully be able to move, start work while continuing with cam, and then after a year, quit the adult industry totally. That puts me at 39 years old....just in time to have a banging 40th birthday to kick off my new life. Thats the plan anyway!

Sorry to jump off topic in a way, but yeah while its scary, Im also super excited...there are ways to do it, just exploring the options and going for it.

^ I'm glad you have a plan!!! I just get really scared/worried for girls that have absolutely NO plan for what they want to do when they can't dance anymore. IMO it's a recipe for financial disaster and a very unhappy life. I guess because if it was me I would be going "aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh" and having a freaking anxiety attack at the uncertainty.

I'm worried for gals that plan to plan on getting a plan at some far-off point in the future. For example: http://www.stripperweb.com/forum/sho...d-an-exit-plan

Things can change overnight. Everyone needs a back-up.

No, because I'm not going to be quitting the sex industry altogether to work at a crappy 9-5 with a half ass paycheck. As an EMT-B you can make about $30,000/year, as a paramedic you make about $55,000/year. That's quite a difference and only 2-4 semesters more work depending on where you go.

Also, I'll still be working weird shifts because medics usually work 12-24 hour shifts so you are up on odd hours. And since I'll be on the road for my job I won't have a boss breathing down my neck, my partner and I will do our own thing according to local protocols. If we fuck up then we will be reprimanded, but if you study hard then that doesn't happen.

I'm excited to have a "straight" job and a W2 so I can get a low interest mortgage. I've spent the last 18 months busting my ass to get my credit score really high, been paying everything on time, no negatives marks--so that's 1/2 the battle. When I finally get that W2 that says I made 50k as a paramedic then I'll get a great deal on a mortgage. It's all about planning ahead.
If you are willing to do for one year what other's won't, you can spend a lifetime doing what other's cant.

Many valid points here. But maybe I should take a moment and clarify a few things. I am about to graduate with an associates in Business. However, I am not getting a bachelors due to the fact that many, many people r sitting around n debt w a bachelors they can not find a job with. I am not in debt due to school--and not going to be-. That is smart as far as I am concerned. I dont have many years left in dancing and in less than two months I will have my degree. With that degree I will prolly be finding entry level positions and to be quite honest I have no interest in the ones i have seen lately.

I will not let fear of a different industry keep my from finding another career. I simply do not WANT to leave the business yet but my age is making it so it needs to happen. Going to school and dancing and competing for the top spots at my age that I have oftentimes is hard at my age. I am a vet, I have 16 years off and on in this business...16 years....

I was not smart like melonie who I believe right away saved for her retirement. I got smart late n my career. Wish that wasnt so but it is what it is..Got to make the best of the time I still have left.

Also the time it may take to land some decent clerical job down the road may take too long..Some people can not afford the 9 to 10 dollar an hour part time positions that are being offered in my area. There arent always managerial positions available....Landing a promotion make take alot longer for most people, especially in my area. People here are taking low paying jobs simply bc there are very few jobs available and unfortunately they dont pay all of some people's bills. Idk where the economy has recovered .but it def isnt here.

I dont doubt my ability to go after any and everything I want in life and dancing def doesnt hold me back nor any fear, I just have to take the time to explore more outside of the safety blanket of dancing.

Not necessarily, I dont fully agree. You just have to cut ur debts and expenses and the transition doesnt have to be such a shock, which is something I have done. It simply isnt my time yet.

Been dancing for almost three years. Love it, hate it. Am thinking moving on to massage therapy and legal massage. Not any worse than lap dances, cleaner work environments, and daytime hours. I can still dance, but it's sort of a transition for me right. Also have a couple of other opportunities I can do as well outside of dancing and massage, but I'm still saving up.

Used to tease this one girl at a previous club cuz she was always doing some kind of course work in between custies. She made bank and moved on in just over a year in some health tech field I think, and thought that was cool, especially with no or very little debt.

Yes this scares me. I don't think I'll ever be able to work for anyone else again. I'm not a stripper I'm a camgirl but this has been on the mind lately. I plan to go to massage school and am working toward saving up for that.
