    Default Brothels legalized in Ontario

Canadian province of Ontario legalizes brothels in landmark ruling

Ottawa (CNN) -- Ontario's top court has legalized brothels, saying Canadian prostitution laws unfairly discriminate against prostitutes and their ability to work in safe environments.
A panel of five judges wrote that the law banning common bawdy houses "is grossly disproportionate" if all it aims to do is keep public order in a neighborhood and maintain public health standards.
"The record is clear that the safest way to sell sex is for a prostitute to work indoors, in a location under her control," the judges wrote in a much anticipated ruling.
"The impact on those put at risk by the legislation is extreme," the judges added.
However, the court stopped short of allowing prostitutes to openly solicit customers on the streets. The court ruled that prohibiting solicitation remains a "a reasonable limit on the right to freedom of expression."
"It is so nice to see that we are now brought out into society. I feel a debutante at a ball. We're almost full citizens so this is wonderful," said Valerie Scott, a former prostitute.
Supporters of the ruling said the laws governing prostitution in Canada would now have to change.
"Any form of criminalization pushes the industry underground and gives opportunities to predators. You can see it through the world," said Nikki Thomas, executive director of Sex Professionals of Canada.
Congrats Ontario! I almost want to move there because it's probably much safer for escorts now...

on the topic of pushing stuff underground - locally the city banned nudity and touching in the clubs- the number of ladies on backpage increased tremendously - they coulnt make the money in the clubs so they turned to escorting - the above post refered to the criminilization of an activity pushes it underground - same concept - they made it more difficult for ladies to make enough money and now they are resorting to activities they would not have before it was made illegal

no - sorry - in the usa where i live -it ruined the club business and now the conventions are started to drift away - the guys that have been coming here for years are really really pissed - ladies who work in the clubs are doing more ( not all ladies ) or escorting since their "legit" gig is now drying up - a couple of clubs have closed -

Even though some of the laws around prostitution have changed, it does not mean the working conditions have changed. they have 30 days to appeal the law around working around the avails of prostitution and they have a year to appeal working indoors/brothels, and since they struck down comminucation it puts street base workers at risk and there is chance they could appeal that decission so its not over yet. There is a lot of work to do. I can't even get to excited because I fear the city will want to add in more annoying pain in the ass by laws and liscencing and I fear of zoning when I much rather working in my own space or home in any location I choose. and I sure as don't want to put out money for a liscence so the government can keep tabs on me.
