and not hunger games. I've read them all already.

I'm out of ideas. I've read so many books now that I'm out of ideas. Terry Goodkind, Terry Brooks, Margaret Atwood, Charlaine Harris, etc etc Read most if not all of them.

I'm looking for something a bit different. Help, please

The Magicians by Lev Grossman: http://www.amazon.com/The-Magicians-...3026948&sr=8-1

I cannot stress how much I love this book. And the follow up: The Magician King.

If you liked the Charlaine Harris books, you might want to check out the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs. It's a similar type of urban fantasy world (though set in the Pacific NW rather than the deep South), and the writing is decent, fast-paced, and enjoyable.
    http://www.amazon.com/Called-Mercy-T...3028174&sr=1-7

    Hmmm, what else...
"The Double Bind" by Chris Bohjalian isn't quite sci-fi/fantasy, but you might enjoy it - especially as an English teacher. It treats the "Great Gatsby" as though it was history rather than fiction, and it follows the story of a girl trying to dig up the truth about the story.
    http://www.amazon.com/The-Double-Bin...3028147&sr=8-1

"The Child Thief" by Brom is a beautifully illustrated but brutally dark version of the Peter Pan story (and chock full of Pagan mythos and imagery). I enjoyed it very much.

Will add more when I think of more.

The dragon riders of pern books are great, by Anne McCaffrey. It's sci-fi, fanasy, pre industrialised, all in one go figure.

Neuromancer by William Gibson, classic sci-fi, techno thriller.

I like the Vampire Academy books too, by Richelle Mead. They're classed as young adult books by I still love 'em.

    And yeah Game Of Thrones.

I can attest to Game of Thrones too, haven't read it yet but was sat in front of an old lady on a train who gave a 15min review to her friend, it sounded brilliant!

Any and all Discworld books by Terry Pratchett, if you haven't already.

    Hull Zero Three!

The movie Pandorum was loosely based on this book. Very loosely. I feel like the book is much better... obviously.

Also, not a book, but the Sci-Fi mag Asimov's Science Fiction has usually has awesome short stories in it. I think you can find some on their site... http://www.asimovs.com/2012_04-05/index.shtml

Oh, just saw you said Margaret Atwood... have you read Oryx and Crake? Since you mention her I'm guessing you have... but if not it's really good!

I have not read this one (yet), but I really enjoyed Jeanette Winterson's "Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit". I just bought "Stone Gods" on Amazon. Thanks for the suggestion!

And thanks for starting this thread, Papillon! I love book threads.

I second George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones. Excellent books and EXTREMELY engaging.

Please, for the love of god, tell me you've read Lord of the Rings. I'm always stunned when someone who reads a ton of fantasy tells me they've never read Tolkien.

Another vote for Game of Thrones. These books are thick and the sub-plots are elaborate. You need to pay attention when you are reading these books, but the gritty nature of the stories is engrossing and these books will give you a ton of distance.

The Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher - most of the books are very good. There is an edginess about them that makes them better than most fantasy books that are set in modern times. The earlier books also contain a great deal of humor.

If you want to go old school fantasy (but not too old school), the the Belgariad by David Eddings. This is simply a fantastic series. It used to be 5 books, but now comes in two volumes.

The nice thing about fantasy books is that they are as good today as 20 or 30 years ago.

I think The Game of Thrones has horrible plot structure. *shrug*

Stranger in a Strange Land is a hallmark sci-fi book. I liked Dragonriders of Pern when I was young, though I don't remember the series enough to give it a strong recommendation. The Xanth collection by Piers Anthony is fun and expansive, though he likes his dirty puns quite a bit.

And done. I like to read a lot of work by one author at a time, anyway. I'll have a Winterson-a-thon.

    ^^^ LMFAO ... indeed !

Returning to the topic, another vote for the George RR Martin 'Game of Thrones' series. I just completed his latest addition 'A Dance with Dragons' ... and every new book surpasses the previous one !

If you're looking for something more challenging, you might try some of Joseph P Farrell's stuff ... 'Secrets of the Unified Field' or 'Reich of the Black Sun' or 'The Philosopher's Stone'. Farrell specializes in combining obscure scientific facts with historical events and conspiracy theory.
