Default Bad Experience w/ cops this week- scared.

Yeah, so over here is a small town where I live. I got pulled over for having a crack on my windshield. The officer then led me into a series of questions. Is this lisense any good? Did you get into a fight? What do you do for work? What are the hours? I am terrifed of police. I was totally sober, wearing a nice suit, driving a rusty old car. I feel like they target me for some reason, or they have seen my car parked at the club.
I was on my way to return a dvd to the library about 1 mile away from my house. I got into the library finally, legs shaking, mind foggy, and tried to find a book. When I got home I just fell apart and cried- I feel violated. I havent had the money to make cosmetic repairs to my car and I'm always aware when an undercover follows me. They do a lot, and its ruining my spring. See, this week, I was in the best mood, applying at a bunch of different jobs, wearing a nice suit, and feeling positive. Now I am basically just afraid to leave the house because of police.

Oh, I'm like candy for them; I had been accused of almost every single traffic violation, minus DUI/DWI. Be strong.

I wouldn't be scared. Some cops are just dicks...I seriously doubt the police department would have singled you out because they've seen your car parked at a strip club. Why do you think you have undercover officers following you around?

Dont worry, you didnt do anything wrong and arent guilty of anything. A simple answer would be "I am getting repaired"

I get pulled over by cops at least ones a week due to the check stop, seeing whether people are drinking. I dont drink and I have my extensions and ton of make up, plus Im driving an end higher car, whose isurance and ownership is under someone else name, where they can be assholes to me. I tell them where I work, and then when they ask as what, I tell them. They get surprised, but easilly well know if a person was drinking/under influence. I only got an asshole (a young) ones, who thought all strippers drank and did drugs, that questioned me 5x times. Look at the in eye when you talk, and be calm when you answer them. Their like alpha-dogs, they can sense fear. So act normal tell them you will repair it soon, and that your insurance is good as they should be aware of it already.

They're not out to get you, seriously. Undercover cops aren't following you around.

A crack in a windshield is a huge red flag for law enforcement. Do you know how dangerous it is to drive like that? They're just doing their job.

the officer may have asked if you got into a fight if you seemed upset or cried. but asking about your work has nothing to do with pulling you over for a cracked windshield. if your work is a concern, park somewhere where the car cannot been seen very well. i do this with my car at work for safety.

as far as an undercover following you, if i were in your shoes, i would not get out of the car. i would keep the doors locked. slightly crack the windows to talk. keeps the keys in the ignition, but have the car off. i would be polite yet firm and ask for some sort of badge before revealing any identification. they must show you that. it also is a good idea to call the police station and ask about this particular undercover or request back up. you are a woman and alone. there are people who impersonate police officers and can harm you. i would play the 'woman by herself' card when requesting back up or to see id. also, it seems odd to ask you if your license and registration is 'still good'. the officer should easily be able to run the tags without having to ask you. did you get this officer's identification at all?

with all the duis, stolen cars, etc. a cracked windshield is NOT the worst offense in the world. honestly, i'm more concerned about someone who is NOT a cop following you and possibly harming you.

I understand why you might be concerned. Police in a small town often play by their own "rules," and their more outrageous behavior tends to fly under the radar.

Having said that, what feels like pushy, intrusive behavior can often be their own form of defense. Traffic stops are incredibly dangerous to the police -- they never know what the hell they may be walking into, and they are usually the last to find out.

Be firm and respectful. Do everything they say, to a fault. Recognize that you are not in control of the situation, they are, and that can feel threatening and hostile under even the best of circumstances. It's actually rarely intended to be this way. It's the dynamic of the power imbalance, that's all.

I would suggest that you do not make inane jokes. Although I understand the temptation to make light of the situation, it's never a good idea. Believe me, they do not think the situation is funny in any way.

Above all, recognize that it's unlikely they are targeting you personally. They may be profiling you -- which can feel unfair and invasive, which of course it is-- but in most cases the police are using that as a shortcut to make certain judgments at a time when they may feel vulnerable themselves.

POOR IDEA. The last thing you want to do is agitate them. If you haven't done anything, don't stress it. Answer calmly and honestly, and you'll be fine.

Ya, don't make 'light' of the situation but at the same time IDC how 'scared' the cop is of the situation....thats plain BS the times they have pulled that intense of a situation on me.

My buddy and I were barely 17 in a nice town etc. and got harassed when on our way to buy school stuff for the next day after he got off work. Police officer grabbing his name tag, demanding where he worked, where we were going, all sorts of weird out of the way questions. Very strange acting and aggressive.

So I think it depends entirely on the officer...I've had some which act in a great manner and act human. Some who are not so much but go ahead and stick to business, with either a warning or a ticket.

It's rare to get a stop where they pull all sorts of questions and interrogation but it happened to me the other night. I live in college town now and it was late like 1 or 2am so kinda understandable for a routine stop. My car was a mess to as I still had stuff I was moving in it.

    Still got the following:

    "Where are you coming from"
"Where are you going" I even tried rattling off the exact address for the apartment complex cause they seemed so focused on it...
    "Why are you going there"

A thousand other random questions it seems ....

My wallet was in a jacket in the car and my other forms were in a mess with my tax forms in the glove dep. so I went along politely.

Even got to the point (there are two seperate police cars too) and he checked my eyes with a flashlight and made me step out of the car. Asked if he could search it, I'm like 'no, not really...but I said 'but go for it if you really want to'. Im not sure if you have to but its pretty quick if not that they can get permission I think..idk..I just wanted to move on with my life. So he searches it, doesn't find anything etc. Then they just leave.

So half an hour of my life wasted for some routine stop as one of my headlights was burned out. Felt like I was a criminal or doing something wrong.

I always love it when they just ask bluntly "How much did you drink tonight", "What drugs are you on" "When is the last time you smoked weed" << I was like really?

Those always peeve me, one time on the way to pick up a friend so they wouldn't drive intoxicated and then got harassed as if I was.

I wouldn't make fun of the situation while your in it, but I really don't think you have to tell them everything, they're just fishing for something.

    Rant over.

This reminds me to read up on your rights in a traffic stop...people need to know their rights in these situations.

Uh...I know a ton of cops...my husband's best friend is a state trooper and plenty of men in my family have had badges at some point.

OP check out this link for info on traffic stops -
    http://lawcollective.org/article.php?id=121
    http://traffic.findlaw.com/traffic-s...fic-stops.html
    http://www.aclu.org/drug-law-reform-...what-do-if-you
    http://www.aclu.org/files/kyr/kyr_english_2.pdf

I agree that a cracked windshield will get you pulled over and it does look suspicious. Clubs are also spots for illegal activity in the eyes of the law - best to fly as under the radar as much as possible (aka get your windshield fixed when you get a chance).

Being polite and calm always is a good idea - a traffic stop isnt the time to be a tough guy or defensive or terrified, I agree officers are usually on edge for late night pullovers anyway. If he seems nervous or something try to do your best to alleviate any tension but you dont have to answer honestly -- by that I mean answer within the confines of your own rights but be as polite as possible. Like it sounds like he was fishing for an excuse to search your car - he doesnt need to know what you do for a living and what hours you work, that is irrelevant to a broken windshield. him asking if your license is good is intimidation - he can just check? There are polite and friendly ways to redirect the questions without sounding like an smartass but being assertive can shutdown their fishing expedition and harassment.I dont agree that if you have nothing to hide give up everything to have them leave you alone: you live in a small town with probably bored cops, are a sex worker, have a beat up car, and presumably work super late at night... best to be super-nice but use your rights to your fullest advantage. Being overly accommodating isnt the same as being polite and friendly.

Depending on where you live, you can get cited for a broken windshield and that can escalate to other things if youre rude or give up random unnecessary information--- especially in a small town where cops keep tabs on about suspicious persons, so best to prioritize its repair and read up on what your rights are. He successfully intimidated you and will probably do it again.

To be fair a broken windshield is probably super WTF to him but Im surprised you didnt get a citation

There are a bunch of YouTube videos on what to do during traffic stops and also on how to talk to the police, watching them over and over again can help you prepare and be less afraid. Knowledge is really power. Basically I agree with the old adage "What good are your rights if you dont know you have them", it is harder to be afraid of police officers if youve rehearsed how to interact with them.

Knowing your rights and practicing how you talk to law enforcement is reactive so best to just save up to fix your windshield - that is a more proactive way to avoid getting pulled over.

^I think the cop cut her a break. In my area, a broken windshield will get you a very expensive ticket, so she got off easy.

I'm not a lawyer, but what I've heard is that you're not supposed to answer ANY questions except for your name and address. And if asked, I think you do have to provide only your ID, proof of insurance, and car registration.

Other than that, it's supposedly better to keep completely silent - because they're trying to get you to say something that they could use as "probable cause for suspicion" or a "confession", etc.

You give only the essential information and ask if you're free to go.

I avoid cops like the plague - I don't trust them. Fortunately I've never had any bad experiences with them, but when I was a kid, my mother would punish me by threatening to have the cops come take me away and throw me in prison. lol

Good luck girlie, keep rocking the suit. It's sure better than their donut butt enhancing uniform.

Yeah, that was the first thing that I thought of, that you do not have to answer any questions like that, because he is just fishing for information. If you say nothing or tell you you prefer not to answer, there really is absolutely nothing he can do to you, and he cant hold it against you. But whatever information you willingly give up by answering him, he *can* use against you.

On that note, I have to say...to the one who said they know lots of cops...I know lots of cops too...one of my best friends is one (which I still think is hilarious, we met 8yrs ago, before he was a cop, before I was an escort...we used to swing together all the time hehe! but I digress) I have been treated very differently in different areas..small town cops are very different from big city cops. Cops with egos, let authority get to their head and were born to be a prick, are a lot different than cops who just want to do their jobs.

As far as being on that end of the law lol my friend and I were racing out of town during ice storm of 98 (some of you might remember??) and we were trying to get out and to her parents house before curfew, she was speeding and a cop stopped us. By the time he walked up to our car...she was crying, I was crying, and cause I was crying kiddo who was just a baby at the time was crying, and my friends cat who probably just wanted to join in was howling. He looked into the car and his face was like..omg and he promised he didnt mean to scare us but she cant be driving so fast, especially with a baby and animal in the car. He didnt even ask her for her id or registration or anything...I think a car full of crying girls freaked him out and he just wanted to get away from us

On my own, a few months ago, I was on my way to a date and there was a trap set up right ont he exit I had to get off on. I was *freaked out* I had a purse full of different types of condoms, lube, and of course this guy had to ask me to buy a sex toy for him, and I had two phones on me...Ive never been stopped by a cop before, and I was like..okay, my freaking luck, today will be the day! Well, as I drove up, there were two cops standing there..the first waved me on, and as I was about to take off, the second one was like...you hold on there, I saw you putting your seatbelt on as you came down the ramp. I was like *gasp!* Not truuuuue!!" and he laughed and saw, awe Im just messing with ya...have a great nite! Jeez, I was still shaking when I showed up for my date...
Don't blink. Don't even blink. Blink and you're dead. Don't turn your back. Don't look away. And don't blink!

Have you gotten any estimates for fixing the crack in your windshield? Have you contacted your insurance company? It says in the article below, that auto insurers usually provide coverage in full, with no deductible.

Pink, IME cops tend to target people driving shitboxes as those folks often have other problems, such as license issues, no insurance and/or have not kept up on registrations.

IMHO you need to get that windshield taken care of ASAP - they are not usually too expensive anyway. It would also help if you got any other cosmetic issues fixed. For that matter, just start dancing your ass off and buy something nicer - LOL.

Also, I agree with others who say that say to just stay calm and do what you are asked to. If you didn't do anything wrong, then all the cop can do is be a shithead for a little bit and make noise. Don't sweat getting pulled over - in my younger years I got pulled over at least 4-5 times per year and just kinda' got used to it.

    Anyway, good luck.

Are they targeting you? Probably, but not because you work at a club. Cops look for "suspicious" vehicles, and a lot of the time, that can mean the older looking ones. My friend recently took a 90-something' car from her father because it was free. She's been pulled over twice in the last month and a half and they always seem surprised to see a barely-21-y/o white girl sitting in the driver's seat. Getting the windshield fixed should be your priority right now. Not just because it'll give them one less reason to pull you over, but because that shit can spread quickly and instead of fixing a crack, you'll be replacing the whole thing. Invest now and save yourself the cash.

Also, when you do get pulled over, turn your car all the way off and set your keys on the dash. Turn on your inside lights if it's dark outside and keep your hands in plain sight, like resting on the wheel or some other position that doesn't seem too intentional. If you have to reach for something like insurance, say, "Okay. I think that's in my glove box. Let me get that for you," or wherever it is. Don't reach around and try to get shit before he is at your window and asks for it. The more relaxed you appear, the easier things will go. No matter your intentions, screwing around with a cop or trying to correct them won't go well for you. I was nearly arrested on a felony charge I had nothing to do with in part because I corrected the law the cop was citing and his interpretation. Easiest way is to cooperate from the beginning, so even if you get a power-tripping asshole, he/she will have less of a reason to want to fuck you over.
