Default Will starting out in a dive hurt my chances of being hired at a more upscale club?

I recently moved to Tampa, FL with one goal in mind: MAKING MONEY. I've never danced before and have pretty much decided that I should start working in a dive since my body isn't where I want it to be and I figure it is better to start making SOME money while I tone up. (My body is not BAD, I'm normal weight and shape up pretty fast.) I am a black girl and want to work at a white/mixed club. I've read about "black girl quotas" and that as a woman of color you have to be better than the white girls to get hired. Plus I cannot dance worth a damn and would likely get booed off stage in a black club, lol.

Am I right about getting started ASAP in a lower-end club? When I am ready to apply at a high-end club will it hurt that my only dancing experience was at a dive? Thanks for your help!

Experience is experience. Besides, don't discount the dives. I love my dive.

I don't think it would harm your chances later, don't worry!

I doubt it, I worked in a craphole just to get used to dancing before moving on to a more upscale place and I would suggest that for you to get some experience, I told them my experience and they didn't mind. After working in the more upscale place I learned I actually like the divey clubs better for the most part.

Nope. I don't think so. I feel like once you work in a real shit hole working in a nice club is cake.

Dives are a good place to get your feet wet and they can be used as productive examples of what NOT to do or become. Keep in mind that smaller club=more drama (not always but in most cases) Lock your stuff up, be polite and friendly but not overly so. Be leery of anyone who is too helpful, friendly etc. Don't give out your personal info. Come prepared, listen, learn and observe. Above all get that paper!!!! Like others have said I think going to a smaller club is a good place to work on your skills. If you feel like wherever you go has a bad reputation you don't have to tell your level up where you worked. Showing and not telling works in most situations, I'm sure this will too c:

Also remember that stuff that passes for kosher at the dive doesn't translate at the upscale place.
