Default Got a 1099 from Streamate, but mom claimed me as a dependent

I was a full-time student last year, but i cammed part-time. My mom knew i had a work-at-home job but she knew i didn't make much from it. I made a little over 4,000 and got a 1099 from streamate. I'm afraid of filing and having the irs come after my mom. Since she technically did provide more than half of my income, will it be ok if i file?

You both can't claim yourself. If your mom claims you, you can't claim yourself but you still have to file taxes (you'll just owe more than if you claimed yourself). If you both claim yourself, she will get a letter from the IRS stating so, and will have to re-file with penalties.

^^^ yes because you in fact didn't earn enough money to 'disqualify' yourself as your mother's dependent, you can indeed file your own tax return without 'rocking any boats' at the IRS ... provided that you do not attempt to claim yourself as a dependent on your own tax return. This will mean that you'll have to pay a higher effective tax rate, but on only a $4000 of income it still shouldn't be too bad ( less than $1000 ). You'd best hurry up as well since there's only one week left before the IRS filing deadline.

I would be more concerned about problems with Sallie Mae, which approves student loans and grants based on 'total household income', which means your mother's income plus your own income.

At this point, it's easiest for you if you just file as a dependent.

^^^ I would only point out that the tax 'problems' only start when the daughter is earning enough money to clearly be providing for 51% of her own financial support. That's a virtual certainty if the girl is earning $20k+ per year. It's a non-issue if the girl is only earning $4k per year.
