Default making hair rats out of old wigs?

Has anyone done this successfully? I'd like to recycle some of my rather large collection of unwearably dead and/or downgraded to costume-quality synthetic wigs and falls and ponytails and whatnot into rats/armatures. I'm thinking about just braiding the fake hair, maybe with a 4-strand round braid, then maybe threading a flexible wire through it. Surely I'm not the first person on this forum to attempt this . . . .

    Sorry I couldn't resist.

Seriously though... I know what a rat is. What is an armature? A rat is just a hair ball that props up bouffants amiright? Why would you need to braid it or put a wire through it?

Wait what is it exactly that we are trying to accomplish with the braids/wire?
