    Default Shades of blonde...

    Question:

How did you find the right shade of blonde for you? I have dark brown hair with red and purple undertones in it, and now that it's warmer I've been tanning some - NC30. I have gray-blue eyes.

I've never been blonde before, and have quite long hair so naturally I plan on getting new extensions. Is it better to get the hair first and have the stylist match it, or no?

I suppose this is the unofficial blonde thread Post your advice or experiences! I'd really appreciate any help and look forward to reading!

The right shade of blond will depend on how your hair re-acts to the chemicals used by your colorist.

My natural hair color is a dish-water light brown and is now a light golden blond. Like you, I have blue-grey eyes but also tend to have a sallow complexion. My original intention was to have a cool ash blond or beige blonde but the darkness of my hair prevented all the color from being completely lifted without a two step process with my hair being bleached almost white first, then a color put on.

I found a color specialist who uses a single process high lift lightener with color. It took me a while to get used to the more golden look, but I receive so many compliments that I let go of my ash blond expectations. Now, when I look at pictures, it really is more flattering.

I tried four different colorists before I found the person I see now. I had problems with my color looking too gold or even orange-y (which I didn't want) so it's been an evolving thing. A few times, I've been in the salon when she has pointed out other patrons whose hair has received the same formula/color but looks way different (darker, lighter, more ashy). It depends on your hair-the thickness, texture, etc.

When it comes to hair coloring, I really advocate seeing a professional. I am cheap about many things, but I think the investment into your hair is worth it. Hope this helps.

I judged the tone I wanted by my undertones and going through a lot of photos of women who had the same color of skin as me. I have really fair skin with pink undertones, and yellowy/golden shades just don't look good on me. Cool ash tones do, and I'm almost to an pure icy white, which is what I want. Getting the shade of blonde you want and keeping it are often difficult. My hair is rather long, so even though the roots are super white, there are areas that are still a bit difficult to get to an even white. Purple conditioner has helped a lot, and I plan to tone it often to keep the shade I want.
