Default Prowler in your yard: conforont him or close curtains?

I was on my couch at 1am with my date and a prowler just walked past the window and looked in at us!!

So what does my date say? Do you think he went to see why there was a man behind my house? NOPE.

He tells me "You should close the blinds". WTF??

Is that the normal thing to do? Because I though a real man would open the door and confront the guy.

I was so surprised I asked my date to leave because he killed my horny with his unmanly reaction.

    Opinions?

Good fences, make good neighbors. However, I would have confronted McProwler with a Flashlight and a Glock; while you called 911 to save his ass from me.

I definitely would have confronted them with my PT840 handgun.

LOL..I don't know if it is manly or not but I know myself, I would have checked this out. I was in the park in a secluded spot playing with a girlfriend & she spotted a guy watching us with binoculars which made her uncomfortable & I chased the guy down & she loved that for some reason & would bring it up from time to time

If I was lucky enough to be your date the first thing I would have done is ask you to call the police. It was 1:00am in the morning and an unknown male was looking into the window of your house. The guy could have been casing your house or the neighborhood for some burglary action, or maybe he was hoping to catch you home alone.

As your "date" and maybe not knowing you closely yet, I'd be wondering if the guy wasn't a crazy stalker, ex-bf, etc. Confronting the guy sounds "manly" but its also a good way to get yourself killed. I would be hesitant to initiate a confrontation if I'm unsure of the situation and in unfamiliar surroundings.

While you are calling the police and reporting the prowler, I'd be trying to get a better look at him and what he's doing. That way if the police do show up in a timely fashion they have a description and a better chance of catching him.

I probably would not have confronted the guy. I would want him to know that we are aware of his presence and are taking action. It is situational though depending on what was going on, type of neighborhood you live in and the surroundings. Unless they are bumbling drunks or crazy killer stalkers, most prowler types are going to run once the lights come on and a guy steps out the door. At most I would give a loud firm verbal warning that he is trespassing and needs to leave immediately and then step back into the safety of the house if he moves closer. If he starts leaving the yard, then it would be important to keep an eye on him and get as good of a description as possible for the police.

In these type of situations you've got to do something. Closing the blinds is just trying to ignore the problem and these types of problems are ones that shouldn't be ignored. The guy could have been harmless lost drunk, he could have been a burglar, he could have been a psycho stalker you picked up from the club, he could be the neighborhood nutcase, he could be the neighborhood rapist; confronting these type of guys can be a risky deal but you definitely can't ignore them either.

I would have flashed him since he's looking for that.

Ok seriously I would have called the cops because you don't know, he could have a gun.

Telling you to close the blinds is definitely a good way to get booted out the door and not seen again. Though, to be nice, I'd call the cops, and then wait fifteen or twenty minutes and then have them leave (both to be safe that I don't look like an easy target, and also to give the prowler some time to go away so my "date" didn't get attacked.)

Did you call the cops? Because the prowler's probably going to be back wandering your neighborhood. What are you doing to protect yourself?

    First World Problems.

If the guy gets up to go kick the Prowlers ass. You dump him because he is too aggressive and gets in fights. If he says "lets stay inside and call the Cops", you don't feel protected by the guy and dump him.

Unfortunately our society is swinging toward favoring the "lets stay inside and call the cops" type.

Jeez, I would not be happy about that at all. I do agree that confronting the guy would be a no go, though I could see that as a reaction and would think wow, he really wants to protect me, but I wouldnt let him go out there... But telling me to close the blinds? No...

My ex is the biggest wuss in the world, and I know his first reaction would have been to tell me to hide (lol) as he ran to close the blinds himself and call 911. And then he would likely pressure me to move and would do whatever he could to get me out of that place...and even if I didnt move, would probably come hang around a lot more, stay with me, call all the time to make sure Im okay...

But to just sit there and say, hey you shoudl go close the blinds...may as well ask me for a beer while Im up. Thats pretty lame.

If im on a date at your house im asking you for your bat, I would hope you have a baseball bat in your bedroom. Im heading outside with the bat while you call the cops. Id have no intention on using it unless I was attacked, but I would be following him and in contact with the cops. If my date felt that was too agressive I would happily move on. If it was at my house I would have gone outside with a bat and something more lethal in the waistband of my pants that she would have liked even less.

He was a sissy and you did the right thing by kicking his ass out. I had another word to describe him, but then I remembered that I'm posting on the pink side of the board...

Close the blinds? LOL, that was unreal. So what would this tough guy had done if the prowler actually entered the house, run off to look for a phone to call 911 while the intruder assaulted you?

He actually LEFT you after some creep was hanging out outside your window peeping on you. WTF.

Wow, I am a very hands-own do-it-yourself type of woman and am used to doing things on my own. So if I am gonna have a man in my life he needs to act like one, no reason I should be going outside to confront a creeper or take out the trash or change my car oil. Stupid ass guys, chivalry is dead.

I think I need more info here....

Was this guy, the prowler...was he a definite prowler? What is the setup of this window? I used to live in an apartment on the first floor, and the living room had a big window right by a walkway. People would pass in front of it all the time, and it was easy to just look in. Is this possible in your situation, or was this guy DEFINITELY some creepy guy sneaking around your place?

If he was a prowler, and there was no doubt about it, then yeah, your date is a gigantic pussy. However, his reaction is the kind of thing I'd say if some guy just happened to be passing by your window and looked in because...well....it was there.

So...I need to know more to pass judgment.

It is a totally private yard, no fence but with bushes/shrubs all around it so you can't just walk in. There is a security guard who patrols it at night but he wears an obvious security unifirm and he doesn't come near my windows.

The prowler, for the second we saw him, looked disheveled and his shirt was untucked. He looked messed up enough that there was no way he lives in this neighborhood. There are no pedestrians here. And there is no public transportation, it's an out of the way place. You would need to try really hard to get back there and wonder around.

Do you want to know the most ridiculous part? Before I kicked him out, before he realized he was leaving, he said that he wanted to take the battery out of his car (parked out front on the street) and bring it inside so nobody stole his car. (Edit: the car must be worth about $500, it's a total junker). That was when I said I wanted him to leave. The nearest police station is literally 2 blocks away, there is no way a car is getting stole off the road in front of my place. And the idea to take out the battery... that he was about to go outside and leave me inside alone, I just said to myself fuck this jerk I'm safer alone.

It is strange how one incident can completely change how you feel about a guy, like I just could never have sex with him now, don't want to go out with him. Yikes that was crazy.

This guy was a world class moron. Since he was already inside the house, I'm betting that things were going pretty well so far on this date. He had the chance to work the protector angle by chasing the guy off and coming back to comfort and reassure you. Instead, he tells you to close the blinds and is talking about taking his car battery indoors. Wow. Talk about working your way OUT of a good night.

This brings me back to a date I went on shortly before I met my wife. We were standing outside of a pub having having a smoke (I smoked back then) when a fairly aggressive homeless guy starts talking to my date from across the street. Soon after, he crossed over to to try to talk to her more closely. When he got close, I moved in front of him and told him that he needed to step the fuck back from the lady (yes, I actually used that exact phrase) and that he could talk to me if he needed something. After a short but heated exchange, he walked away. Now this girl was a prison guard (not the butch variety - she was beautiful and downright hot) and could certainly handle herself, but she appreciated what I did. The night had already been going well before that happened, but something seemed to break open at that moment and I had one hell of a time with her from then on.

An opportunity to seal the deal dropped in his lap, but instead of capitalizing on it, he not only threw it on the floor, but then stomped on it with his battery comment. LMAO.

I was waiting for someone else to post ^^ something like that. It's not always the best thing to confront. Of course it all depends on the situation. The article above it was burglary, and 2 perps. Here it is a lone peeping tom who may or may not be armed.

Maybe not, but to just say "hey babe, you better close your blinds"...???

And then say "you know, I'd better go get the BATTERY OUT OF MY CAR??"

    What a fucking dingleberry.

Thanks for this. Macho bullshit looks good on TV, but mostly ends in tragedy in real life. My husband's been stabbed before for confronting an aggressor and therefore I hold him back from all confrontations if I'm present for them, honor be damned. The chances of these types of things ending in fatal injury jumps to the 90% range when you directly engage a threat. I'm just saying.

That said, you were right to kick that douche out. Close the blinds? As in ignore the fact that some strange man is trespassing and hope the intruder goes away? Fuck that. He shouldn't go outside and beat the guy's ass, but he should have at least made sure to act as a barrier between you and the perceived threat and dialed the local authorities or something.

Ok you caught me. On a previous occasion we were in a hot tub and he didn't do anything when someone bothered me. So I already knew what I was dealing with. Sucks to have it confirmed.
