    Some convenience stores have booklets with lists of apartments available in the area. Also, a real-estate agent would probably have access to listings.

    I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have to pay a real estate agent. They would get their commission from the owner.

    Most people I know here in SF find places off of CL since EVERYONE uses it here. But trying a real estate agent may not be a bad idea. I would love to live in North Beach...

    I'm in the same boat and I keep getting scams emailing me back so be careful. Actually looking around has been really helpful, and places that let you call, not just email.

    www.rent.com, I used this when I was apartment hunting. The best part is that if you rent a place listed on the site you get a $100 gift card!
