Thumbs up Bring the workout home!

Okay, this is probably a "duh" comment but I just wanted to share my experience with working out at a gym versus at home.

I belonged to 24 Hour Fitness for 2 years. I was usually pretty good about going. I liked that I had to go somewhere to workout and felt like being around others motivated me. I would go to the gym, head straight for the elliptical. Workout for 20-30 minutes and consider it an accomplishment. Sometimes I would take one of the classes but usually I just wanted a quick in and a quick out. I would do this as many as 5 times a week or as little as 0 times a week. Not exactly a great way to workout. I basically worked out when I felt fat and that isn't often enough.

Then my membership expired. I had a choice. I could either pay $300 for another 2 years of membership or spend that $300 on a decent elliptical machine. I opted for the elliptical machine. A Gold's Gym 380 Stridetrainer from Walmart.com to be precise. It doesn't take up much space, is easy to assemble and for the low price is a great machine.

I was worried that I would never use it but I was determined to workout almost as much as I watch TV (which is a lot). I set up the elliptical right in front of my TV. It is literally the best "seat" in the house which encourages me to use it instead of sitting on the couch or floor. Now I work out DAILY without fail. Usually averaging 2 hours a day. This might seem excessive and it probably is but I feel great, I'm leaner and since I still do pushups, situps, lunges... I'm more toned.

Working out so much accidentally made me a healthier eater too. Now I don't WANT to down 2 cans of soda while watching Shameless. I want water and juice. I can't imagine eating greasy fast food and since I'm not driving to the gym anymore... I'm not tempted by fast food as a way to fill my belly after a workout.

I don't know if this would work for everyone. Maybe you have a child at home and can't "block" your TV and living room with an elliptical machine but for me it worked perfectly. It's only been three weeks of non-stop use but I don't see myself slowing down.

Going to the gym didn't just cost membership fees but it cost gas and more time than just the workout (driving there, parking, changing, finding a machine, getting situated, driving home, getting distracted by "important" errands). My quick workouts of 30 minutes actually took closer to 2 hours from home to home. I also noticed I would create "necessary" errands because my gym was near a mall and many other stores. I would end up spending $100+ on random shit at Target or in clothing stores that I normally wouldn't just because I was "already in the area". Not a smart way to live.

So maybe this will encourage some of you to adapt a more consistent exercise routine, maybe not. Sometimes the fancy gym isn't our best friend. I just thought I'd share.
