Mind Blowing *warning if you go thru your cable company for internet and use included antivirus

yesterday/ last night was a whole lot of fuckery!!! and a theory proven... lets go back first...
i had ***cast almost 2 yrs ago and they had mcafee security suite and some other security software that helped protect u from keyloggers, and would store your account passwords, bank accts ect.. I used the security stuff only no saving of password for me... things were easy breezy until 1 day i can't type! literally im pressing buttons on my keyboard and nothing is appearing, or if something does show up its letters im clearly not pressing, anywho looked it up found the ***cast security whatever its called keylogger protection thingy was the issue uninstall it and of course things went back to normal.. until a bill was paid late.. the virus protector stopped updating, wouldn't work right til one day my laptop would not turn on. im on the phone w these people and they admit although they use mcafee security suite its not the same version as the kind u would buy at office max or something.. needless to say they couldn't fix my problem and eventually my laptop was rendered a paperweight..

    fast forward to last night/yesterday..
the day b4 my computer was working fine (ive only had it since january) no viruses no freezing/problems nothing.. hell i worked the night b4..anyway the same cable company now uses norton security suite it recently had to update.. this go around in the choosing to either pay my rent or cable i chose rent.. so its late.. after the norton updated my computer restarted and the fuckery starts... the computer went black and needed to scan C drive for errors? after the scan it kept saying a recent software change is stopping windows from starting.. i then went to safe mode tried to uninstall norton and could not.. did several restore back to certain dates..nothing until finally my computer said fuck it we are no longer going to boot in safe mode.. wouldnt boot in either option of safe mode, no restore point, just back to the same black screen that said software recent change is keeping windows from starting.. at this point im screwed cant back up my shit nothing workd..hell it would not even restore to factory defaults saving data or just purging the c drive.. the real kicker was when i was trying to use the cds i burned the first day i got the computer the fucker had the nerve to say that the 2nd disc was corrupt or a file was missing... so i lost everything.. and now owned a 4 month old paperweight..

i was heated.. i get when u download the software from said cable company u can have it for as long as u have the subscription.. but no where in the agreement did i give permission for them to fuck up my whole computer because they did not recieve their payment.. trust thats not going to make me pay my bill any fucking quicker...i slept on it.. woke up today and somehow the cam gods were on my side because i took it from a paperweight to now functioning again restoring itself from disc... but my theory of the first encounter with the shit that happend last night was more than enough to have me pissed at my cable company..

long story short... either get avg or spend the 40 bucks to get the real antivirus protection from the store and not thru your cable provider...

*also if u have and acer computer and its past 90days to return it to the store but u purchased the service plan.. u will have to call acer and u will have to fork up the money to send said equipment to acer to fix and it will take 7-10 days to get it back, unless there is "damage" then they will call u to pay first or they will send it back to u unfixed..
still here.... just in another chapter..

Thanks for this warning... Ive always been leery of installing anything from my cable company on my computer, I would rather use my own programs, and AVG has been really, really good to me. good to know I wasnt just being paranoid...I didnt think of it being anything nearly that disasterous (I feel like some rights or something is being violated here...something! How can they brick your computer for not paying your cable bill?!) but cause of what I do, I was always just kind of feeling like whatever they install on my computer, would include something to be able to view what I do on here and send info back to them somenhow, veiled under some sort of "error reporting" thing.

speaking of which, I *always* opt out of allowing any programs error reporting feature..I dont want any information moving on and off my computer without my explicit knowledge! But I digress Thanks so much for the warning, this is good info for anyone with cable internet.
Don't blink. Don't even blink. Blink and you're dead. Don't turn your back. Don't look away. And don't blink!

i was highly fucked up and pissed like really? its one thing to stop ur stuff from working/updating/no longer scanning, its a whole different thing to render the software incompatible to the point my computer just refuses to boot because of it.. and i could see if something else had updated like my new logitech cam software but no, the norton was the very last thing that changed..

all my photos, videos, music, documents.. gone.. fucked up. but at least i got it working an can now go back to work

This is definitely a nasty piece of business. While the cable company will deny responsibility, it's a virtual certainty that the cable company knows the side effects that non-payment of cable bills will have on non-payers' computers !

Agreed that Avast or AVG do a fantastic job for free !!

I use Avast myself, and I also would recommend it as a free security boost.

But remember girls: Never have more than one antivirus program at a time.

Also remember: Antivirus programs are NOT A SURE THING. There is no such thing as a perfect antivirus, because keep in mind that all those fancy virus definitions your program relies on are already too old to do much good. A virus has to hit and do serious damage, be reported, and be analyzed before a definition can be sent from your provider. You should NEVER rely on an antivirus "suite" alone.

Deca's recommended programs for a happy computer:
Avast! - Free realtime protection and nice, thorough scanning. Run full scan at least once a week.
Malwarebytes - Free "extra layer" of defense. No real-time protection, but a great scanning tool. Run full scan at least once a week.
CCleaner - A cleanup tool that deletes leftover files and fixes dead registry entries. Run Cleaner and Registry at least once a week.
Auslogics Disk Defrag - Disc defagmentation at its best. Much more effective than Windows' built-in tool. Again, once a week.

Revo Uninstaller - MUCH better than windows' Add/Remove programs feature. Not only uninstalls, but also checks for files the unwanted program leaves behind!
WinDirStat - This tool shows, in a nice visual format, what files and directories are taking up how much space on your hard drive. AMAZING for those times when you wonder "Where the hell did my free space go?"

I freaked out when I read this and paid my cable bill, then ran out to my husband and babbled about how my computer could blow up if I don't pay on time. He kind of face palmed and said they wouldn't do that/aren't allowed to do that/have no reason to do that. He said it was a problem with your software unrelated to your bill or cable account. He's been in networking/computers for like ever so he knows his stuff!

Avast anti-virus (free version) and Spybot have done well by me for the past few years. Tech hubby says Norton and McAfee are generally crap. They behave like viruses, in a lot of ways (i.e. locking you out of windows just because they couldn't update. wtf?)

I would agree with him if i had not been through what i did the first time around with my cable company...and also not discrediting him i also have a computer/networking background its just too much that went on that directly involved them on both occasions especially since b4 those incidents my computers were running perfectly fine.

*also not saying my paperweight issue is something u would experience as well.. it would be lil shit like freezing, not being able to type... im just saying what happened in my experiences.. and since it happened more than once around w the same circumstances, it leads to said post.

It may be possible mcafee was still installed or portions of the program. I have encountered many computers where I had to use a mcafee removal tool, which is made by mcafee because the program doesnt like to uninstall correctly. If you have 2 antivirus's with real time scanning (like norton and mcafee) it can and will cause these kinds of issues. When I heard comcast was switching antivirus's I facepalmed. Im sure that switch harmed many people's computers.
