Default My dog is getting extremely blatant about stealing food from trashcan/counters

I put out the trash every few days so it's not like there's a lot of trash building
up. But he will dig in the trash if there's anything moderately edible.
Plus, he just got a turkey bone off the back end of the counter (so now I get
to worry about punctured intestines) which he would have had to really
    work at to get to.

So, now he's going to have to be confined anytime my boyfriend or I are
out of the house (we were gone for maybe an hour or an hour and twenty
minutes when he got the turkey bone.)

Are there any other training tricks? I catch him in the trash and yell
and smack him and he goes and lays down, but he keeps doing it!

It's driving me crazy. Plus, as much as he's pissing me off, I don't want
him to die from being stupid enough to eat cooked bones.

Can you secure the trash can? Like in a smaller can under the sink with child locks on the cupboard doors?

Our under sink is really cramped the way that it's built. I'm seriously about to consider getting one of those big oscar the grouch trash cans for the front porch and putting everything out there.

But I'll look at the dimensions under the sink and see if I can figure out a shorter trashcan.

gah! I love my dog and I know he lives better than 98% of the dogs out there, but he's SUCH an asshole when it comes to food, even though he gets fed several times a day different foods (mostly raw, but sometimes he gets dog food from my boyfriend's dog's supply.)

he's just a TOTAL ASSHOLE sometimes!!!! Gargh.

My dog does this and I was told to put some awful tasting things on top of the garbage can. I can't remember what I used, think it was apple bitter but it worked and he never did it again.

That should work, but I've sprayed it in the garbage and also put some in his tongue. My parents had a problem years ago with a dog doing this and they used tobasco sauce and poured it into the garbage. Also worked.

Maybe gate him off when you can't watch him. I had dogs that were potty trained but just loved this one rug in this one spot, and there was nothing I could do to stop them.

Tabasco! Cheap and useful. Dollar store here I come tomorrow!

    re: the pee spot--
I find white vinegar really useful. Blot the pee, douse in white vinegar and let dry. I've also seen something about when it's wet with whatever you're cleaning it with (say oxyclean) you then pour a lot of borax over the wet spot, let it dry over a few days and then vacuum up.

I've gotta try some of these. Our dog will root for bones/leftovers for obvious reasons, but I think he has separation anxiety too and has been known to raid the trash when I've popped out for 5 min. He doesn't do it much, maybe 1 time in a fortnight, and he knows its bad because he hides in the corner afterwards, but I think he does it for the attention of getting told off. I read somewhere to not react, to just clean it up and not give him attention, but that just seems unhelpful.

the cayenne pepper trick seems to be working so far.

My boyfriend and I heavily dusted some fries with cayenne and left them on the coffee table just to see what they'd do.
We noticed a few fries missing, and some guilty looks, but they didn't ravage it. in fact, my boyfriend's dog was a little
red around the mouth (from skin sensitivity from, I gather, the cayenne.)

So we're going to keep doing that.

    Makes me happy.
