Default Self-employed UK - any advice?!

I recently moved to the UK and I would like to stay here at least for a few years (maybe longer...?). I registered myself as a self-employed entertainer because I want to be in the system if I am going to live here. Speaking to other girls that I work with it doesnt really seem like anyone else does this so I dont have anyone to ask for advice! Any of you UK-dancers who pay taxes? I have a few questions if you dont mind!

Do you do everything alone or do you pay someone to keep track of everything? I had a company in Spain before and the accountant I had there did everything wrong and was so expensive! I dont trust them but I am nervous that I will not do things right and that I will have to pay so much in the end of the tax-year! I really dont like that you just pay once a year...I would really prefer to pay my taxes every 3 months, is that possible?

How do you proof that the money comes from dancing...? Do you write a reciept to the club when you receive your money at the end of the night? (Thats how it works where I dance.) I just think that if I dont have any proof from where the money comes I could just as well be selling drugs saying I am an entertainer...?!

What sort of receipts do you keep? I think I will start to keep all receipt in connection to my work, like makeup, travel with taxi, outfits, shoes etc.

I have so many questions but this will do for now! I would really appreciate any help!

I think you can opt to pay several time throughout the year.

These are good questions! I've done one tax return, but it didn't require any proof of where my money came from... i just said i earned £x and it it calculated what i owed (did it online). I didn't deal with expenses then though so i'm not sure about all that.

Best bet is to contact your nearest tax office (check www.hmrc.gov.uk), they may be able to help you with this. Otherwise there may be a few uk girls here that can recommend accountants.

^^^ It would appear that HMRC requires far fewer details than the IRS does !!!

At any rate, there appears to be a function on the HMRC website for setting up a 'Business Tax Dashboard' ...

I spoke to a girl yesterday who does file taxes...she said you basically just have to give a figure, I don't get it?!How is that even possible that I don't need to give any proof as of where the money comes from? It seems too easy. This girl said she just declares £10 000 a year! I want to declare more than that...I need to because I want to put my money into the bank and not into a mattress....I think I need to get an accountant...at least in the beginning until I know how it works!

^^^ as of yet, it would appear that the UK HMRC hasn't 'closed the loop' regarding the comparison of the amount of reported income ( thus taxes paid ) to the amount of actual spending taking place by the same person, to the same extent that the US IRS already has. With the UK's gov't budget problems and general economic problems, this is guaranteed to change in the future. In fact, UK Chancellor George Osborne was proposing new legislation to this effect a couple of weeks ago. See

quick q ... do i NEED receipts for my house fees to put them down as an expense? I've found a govt guide document saying if you don't have or can't get receipts to just keep notes when you pay cash expenses and your own records should suffice.

great site btw xxxtax, will be looking into that next year!

What exactly do you mean by house fees? If you are talking about what the club charges you - ideally yes a receipt of some kind else just make a note of it.

Good records will always keep HMRC happy.

Thanks for the comments... I am always happy to help

^ Yes, the £20 or so paid to the club every night to work. I keep a spreadsheet of everything I pay out and make back, I'll ask for receipts from now on for next time then.

If they don't give you a receipt then it's not a big problem, but it's better if they do.

Feel free to contact myself directly if you want any more advice. All details are on my website.
