Default State of the industry or seasonal change?

I'm not trying to start another "camming sucks right now"...so before replying, can I draw your attention to the "camming sucks right now" thread. If you have any comments that are just "yeah it is really slow", please add em there.

What I AM interested in is seasonal variation. I started camming just over a year ago, and so I don't really have any frame of reference from my own experiences - of COURSE last winter was better than last summer...in the summer I was just figuring myself out! But I do remember reading a few comments about summer generally being a "slower" time.

For the most part, I tend to think that no time is ever "slower" than any other - it all depends on mindset and how much you work, but I would love to hear the more seasoned (pun intended!) cam girls take on it...is summer usually slower?

honestly, I can't say I've noticed any seasonal patterns in camming, aside from a noticeable rise in earnings leading up to xmas/new years, with a corresponding dip after xmas/new years each year that I plan for and expect. Even that post-holiday dip varies for me though. Some years, it gets slow for a minute immediately after new years, whereas this year my dip occurred during the last two weeks of January-the first two weeks were fantastic.

I'm glad you raised the issue of non-seasonal factors than influence earnings, because honestly, unless one works the exact same site doing the same number of hours from year to year, it's difficult to quantify exactly how seasonality plays into the end result. Looking back at my earnings over the past few years, my income rises to a new average level every 3-4 months or so, with the odd insanely good week here and there evening out the occasional not-so-ideal earnings week. That has little to do with seasonality, and everything to do with the fact that every few months I add something new, increasing my income avenues. Speaking only for myself, there really doesn't seem to be any statistical difference between earnings in the summer, fall, winter and spring months, based upon that criterion alone.

One situation in which I could see seasonality being a factor is if one tends to predominantly attract a very specific type of customer (eg; students, as was mentioned in another thread regarding seasonality in camming). I can also see camming as being more volatile for chicas who rely more upon new traffic than an existing regular customer base, but even then, I personally don't notice any time of year that is consistently marked by an increase or decrease in new paying traffic flows, aside from the period prior to and after xmas/new years

In general, when I don't respond to my customers or promote cuz I'm too busy with my vanilla work, or when I ignore my content cuz I'm really busy on cam, I make less $$$$ in the neglected area until I pick things up again. When I pay attention to my customers, promote and make my content, I earn more. For me that holds true 365. While camming earnings are not guaranteed, I really find that a straight equation of work invested = $$$$$ earned holds true, although the more I earn the easier it gets to maintain those earnings without additional effort. I actually love that about camming, and I never find myself feeling powerless against conditions beyond my control. In that way, I find camming far more financially empowering than my salaried vanilla work.

I like thinking about ish like this, so thanks for the thread!

I would only add that, with the majority of webcam customers being north of the equator, there is typically a seasonal summer 'slowdown' in webcam customer spending between June and September. Part of this probably comes from financial concerns ... i.e. summer vacations cost money, home construction / repair projects cost money, etc. Part of this probably comes from 'substitution' i.e. good weather increasing the probability that webcam customers will head out to local clubs / bars rather than sitting home alone in front of a computer. And part of this probably comes from 'reduced opportunity' i.e. married webcam customers having to deal with kids being out of school, family summer vacations / events etc., college student webcam customers not having equal opportunity to access webcam sites from their parents' homes etc.

^I agree. I have seen it get slower during the summer, especially in the week right before the kids go back to school. I think it's because people are trying to squeeze in their last family vacations/ family time at home.

I also agree that right before Christmas/New Year is pretty good and it significantly dips after that. I also experienced a good January though this year, and it didn't really slow down for me until the end of Jan.

I waited tables as well as bartended for almost 5 years before I started camming. The constant fluctuation in business seems to be very similar in the two industries. I have days where I make $20 and days where I make $100. I guess that some seasons may be genuinely slower than others (like anything sales-based), but one thing I've noticed on both this forum and the other one I'm on is that someone is always talking about a slow season. First it was Christmas, then it was tax season, now it's summer. I think that this will be different for everyone. Girls were talking about how slow last night was for them, and I did fine, other nights I watch everyone make bank and I sit in an almost empty room and yell at beggars for an hour or two until I get pissed off and go do something else.

I think that the fluctuations are relative to different girls, just my observations so far. What do you ladies think about this?

I wouldn't say it as seasonal as something like the hotel industry, but I so find that come summer I do more phone only business from guys who are often calling from work or the car and I suspect that is because wife and kids are around. It's not more a shift in how customers access me. I'm taking advantage of it to shoot more clips.

I also noticed that in the past month, there have been far more girls on than there were over the winter....maybe a seasonal influx? Girls who are also in university/college and have the summer off working to pay for the next year of schooling?

I'm reminded of a girl I used to work with who was doing her masters in sociology/anthropology....she spent MONTHS constructing studies with different girls about the effects of menstrual cycles, lunar cycles, the stock market, and sports scores....it was fascinating!!

I think more people get out of their houses and start doing things in the summer. I've kinda felt that camming slows down during this time as well. So this has been a chance for me to try getting back into doing graphic design and start making websites and still camming a bit. I actually took a small break and am trying different sites to get myself back into the swing of things again.

one thing I've noticed on both this forum and the other one I'm on is that someone is always talking about a slow season. First it was Christmas, then it was tax season, now it's summer.
One variable that influences this is which economic group your customers predominantly fall into. As discussed in other threads, unlike upscale strip clubs that can appeal to the top 10% of earners, adult webcams predominantly appeal to middle class / working class customers. Witth top 10% earning customers, annual 'cash flow' patterns usually include a sizeable bonus at Christmas / end of year, a major cash crunch from January through April as taxes must be paid, an 'opportunity' shortfall over the summer due to lengthy vacations etc. Middle class / working class 'cash flow' patterns are usually different, and include Christmas as cash crunch time ( due to much smaller bonuses ), January through April involve extra cash from tax refunds, a cash crunch over the summer due to vacation / home repair costs etc.
