Default Buying vehicles out of your local newspaper..

My husband is in desperate need of a truck. I found one in the paper for $1500. I'm very weary about buying things from people I don't know. Especially since last year we bought a van off of craigslist, drove it all the way home and the p.o.s. stopped running. Turns out the asshole who sold us the van had put something all over the parts, Stop Leek or something?? IDK.. My husband is unfortunately a moron when it comes to automobiles and their inner workings so he has no idea what to look out for. Anyways, the point of this is: Do I have any sort of rights when purchasing a vehicle from someone? Is it true that they can basically sell me a p.o.s. and get away with it?

If you do not have a bill of sale that stipulates the machine operates, then Yes. However, there I must stipulate that this is determined differently in each of the 50 States. Check your State for a "Lemon Law".

Have you looked at local dealers? Like main dealers-Ford, Hyundai, etc, not "USED CARS HERE" or something. Most brand dealers have bargain lots with cars from $800-5,000, and will have been inspected and some even have warranties. If something goes wrong right after you buy it, you'll have a better chance of it being covered than if you bought it from someone out of a paper.

kaiarose, I dont know the exact name of the thing that auto places use but they can hook the car up to this machine and let you know of any defects or things that need to be fixed on the car. It was around 80 bucks for me to do it with my car. Too many people are shisty and wont be honest if something is wrong. Let me know if you want the name of a few places that wont be too much to do that. Good luck!

I think you mean an OBD II reader. Yeah, that is handy, and if there is a trouble code it will tell you which one. Then you need the code book to find the definition of said code.

agreed with Kandie Kitten that, from a 'real world' standpoint, purchasing a vehicle from a private seller is pretty much 'caveat emptor'. While state 'Lemon Law' provisions can theoretically be brought into play, attempting to do so will involve attorney's fees as well as meeting a legal burden of proof that the seller 'knowingly' withheld negative information about the vehicle's condition from the buyer. Where a $1500 truck is concerned, the fact that it is old with lots of miles on it only increases the difficulty of meeting that burden of proof.

Unlike private sellers, auto dealers ( even bargain basement used car lots ) have a vested interest in preserving their business licenses, auto inspection licenses, BBB rating etc. - and as such are far less likely to try and 'stiff' Lemon buyers. Of course, buyers ultimately wind up paying higher prices in exchange for this higher level of seller 'responsibility'.

Ask if you can test drive the car. I don't see why it would be a problem. The guy who owns the truck will know that someone isn't going to risk a theft auto felony for a $1,500 vehicle.

When you find a used vehicle you're seriously interested in, take it to an independent mechanic that you trust and have him inspect it for problems before you agree to buy. Yes, it may cost $100 - $200, but it will be money well spent. If the seller doesn't agree, then walk away and don't look back.
