Default Turkey, Debating A Women's Right To Bear Arms

Debate? What debate? If the society and other men refuse to stand up for the women in their society, they damn well should be able to defend themselves from this abuse.

"Hayrettin Bulan with the women's group Sefkat-Der, which means "compassion foundation," shocked some people with a call for a vigorous self-defense program for women, including giving them guns and teaching them how to use them. Bulan says it's just one of a series of measures his group recommends..."

There should be no debate. Enough is enough and some times that's all that stands between you and your abuser. Some good quotes in the article like:

Hayrettin Bulan with the women's group Sefkat-Der, which means "compassion foundation," shocked some people with a call for a vigorous self-defense program for women, including giving them guns and teaching them how to use them. Bulan says it's just one of a series of measures his group recommends, but it's gotten by far the most attention.

"We're telling these battered women: If the government won't protect you, learn to protect yourselves. Self-defense is a legitimate right. Carry pepper spray, learn martial arts, and yes, go to the range and learn to shoot a gun," Bulan says. "It amazes me that people think it's fine for a shop owner to have a gun to protect his money, but a woman can't have one to save her life."

No one there is going to change anything to protect these women, so someone (and ex LEO) is recommending they learn to defend themselves. Some times real change comes from some movement, and perhaps beating their women to death for "honor" or some such BS will be reduced when the women decides she's had enough of it.

Amazing how fast men who like to abuse women back down when the woman is willing to go down fighting. I can see a women's movement like the spreading around the region and making either real change, or exposing the total lack of laws, or enforcement of the laws, protecting women.

Agreed. My father showed me how to use a gun and how to fight and trust me I would shoot if attacked. The government will not protect women we need to do it ourselves.

And when a government actively does not pursue charges or arrest abusers because it's culturally accepted, then it's essentially left to the women to protect themselves. This person, a man and ex LEO, is showing them they don't have to live as prisoners hiding from their own attackers.

At risk of violating the politics ban, I will point out that the NPR story conveniently leaves out the hugely important fact that the 'rights' of women being debated in Turkey are arguably in violation of Fundamentalist Muslim teachings / Sharia law. Turkey, and every other country whose citizens are majority Muslim, arguably runs a huge political risk if it were to officially support 'rights' for women which are contrary to Islam.

^^^ fortunately, the thread you linked pre-dates the SW 'Politics Ban'.

Agreed with both of you. I'd love to say things further but due to the politics ban all I will say is basically what was mentioned about Islam.

I was excited to see this posted here as I studied abroad in Turkey and still like to keep up with what is going on and the move seemingly away from the secularism that had been so heavily encouraged since 1928 I believe when Islam was removed as the religion of the state. As Turkey moved forward and attempted to remain secular they actually banned women from wearing headscarves in public, this was only reversed in 2008. There exists in Turkey a Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı) and unfortunately, in my opinion by Western standards, things have been sliding in an unfortunate direction. These women have my compassion and support.

Was that too political for SW?

Kat I agree with you and would add a few things but it might be too political except to say I have been hearing how many countries that are known for secularism are moving towards more extremism.
