Horrible. I can't imagine allowing animals to suffer. Sadly we have a problem with overpopulation and when people buy from breeders they add to the overpopulation. I only adopt from shelters, rescue groups and would never consider a breeder. Everytime I read a post online or talk to someone offline and they mention getting an animal from a breeder I am horrified because I have seen so many animals go unadopted.
We need a society where we don't support the suffering of animals.

I think if more people saw the results of overpopulation they would go to shelters. Shelters even have dogs with papers. I have friends who found specific breeds from rescue groups instead of breeders. Ironically my spoiled rotten dog is sitting by me waiting for his dinner at 4:30pm and all I keep thinking is how lucky he is (he came from a rescue group).

Not really, there are websites that list specific breeds, many shelters also run databases of every dog and many websites to get names of breed rescue groups. Petfinder is a good site and I believe Petco and Petsmart also have listings.
I know it's a touchy subject, but as someone who grew up in the dog show world (my parent has been a dog lover and 'breeder' for 30+ years) I feel the need to clarify that there is a difference between responsible dog breeders, and crappy irresponsible ones.
I am completely against purchasing a dog from an irresponsible breeder - one who has tons of litters, doesn't take care of their dogs, doesn't screen potential owners, doesn't do any research and ends up breeding sickly uncared for dogs. Sadly, these are the breeders who advertise, and they give everyone a bad rep.
There are good dog breeders, they get their dogs tested for genetic diseases, screen owners, and guarantee to take the puppy back if the owner can't keep it. They also don't really make money off it, because breeding dogs responsibly is expensive.
Anyhow, that's my mini tirade. Beware of shitty breeders, but don't demonize the good ones.
Animal abuse is horrifying, and it seems to me that the best thing we can do to prevent it (seeing as it stems from overpopulation) is donate to and promote spay and neuter programs, and volunteer at shelters if you have the time.

I have known breeders like you mentioned (and most seem to breed for show dogs)and unfortunately I think they are a minority. Also, don't most of them have limits on the amount they breed? The majority of the backyard breeders don't do any of that.
Oh I know, and I think backyard breeders are scum who don't care about their dogs, or just very ignorant. Good breeders are definitely the minority, but not too hard to find - they just tend to advertise in magazines and at dog shows instead of online
I just wanted to clarify that responsible breeders do exist! And if you are willing to find one it's great. They have limits in the sense that they don't 'overbreed' their females (no more than 1 litter every year or two)
But yes, backyard breeders are the majority and it sucks. Makes me sad to see all the puppies on craigslist that people bought from backyard breeders and then realized were too much work..

I do actually understand the situations you mentioned because my parents had friends who had show dogs and bred them. In these cases they seem to breed animals for people who want them for shows and I have no issue with that because they have a reason for it.

This kind of thing makes my blood boil! Capital punishment should be instated for animal cruelty
