Skull My Body is Falling Apart

Since I started dancing (gotten worse since I've been on Accutane, but I only have five days left of the treatment), my body has almost always been sore and achy. My joints all pop, my muscles are always tired, and I tend to always have a low-grade sciatic pain in my butt and down either leg, depending on the month. I had a wake up call two days ago on vacation. I hadn't been wearing my 6 inch stilettos in a week, but I'd just gone on a long walk to lunch. After lunch, I tried to get up and walk away, and my right leg was stuck in it's socket somehow. I was physically unable to move my leg forward without a firey, burning, excruciating pain. I immediately teared up and dragged myself back to my seat. A few stretches and twists and moments to compose myself did the trick, but I was left with a very, very sore joint the rest of the day. I decided then and there to do something about it. My body is my temple and I want to preserve it. All my favorite things in life require me to be healthy and mobile. My ideas include: going to a chiropractor, taking glucosamine/chondroitin and fish oil in addition to the gram of MSM, biotin and multi-V I already take, only working two nights a week, yoga, learning some good stretches...

Does anyone have any more suggestions of things to do? Anyone know any good stretches to prepare one's body for six inch stilettos and the strain of lap dances? Any good stretches for after work or anytime? Are there some important supplements that I'm forgetting? Favorite yoga poses? Let's stay healthy!

Are you allowed to sit on customer's laps during lap dances? I majorly fucked my knees up already from figure skating when I was younger so although my issues aren't nearly as great as yours, I feel you. Try not to be "squatting" in your heels for long periods of time, and if your club allows it alternate one song sitting on the customers lap and one song dancing standing up. Another thing...though it is not the classiest...would it be possible for you to lose the shoes during private dances sometimes? I know this kind of takes away from the allure, I was thinking more doing this with your regulars or when a customer is getting looooong strings of dances. Provided your club is reasonably clean. Also I'd avoid polework. On top of everything else you don't need to be in pain from bruises too!

Are you sure your problems are just symptoms of being overworked? If you haven't already seen a doctor and if taking it easier on your body doesn't show improvement, I think you should go to a specialist. I don't want to be an alarmist, but a knew a girl when I was younger who began presenting with inordinate amounts of pain and she ended up having severe arthritis in her hips. A GP is just going to shrug you off probably, maybe draw some blood and say it's "inconclusive," but someone with more knowledge on the subject could perhaps identify an underlying problem.

In regards to the supplements, from what I've read, you really need to do your research on the type and brand, and also pay attention to what you eat/drink with them. I think the main offenders in studies were multi-vitamins because they often didn't even fully dissolve once ingested. I used to take them when I first became a vegetarian and was concerned when my health seemed to be declining anyway. I stopped taking them and focused on getting my nutrition through a more varied diet and have been much better.

MSM and fish oil help me a lot; I can tell when I've been slacking on taking them. I had back problems even before I started dancing, and it hurt SO much worse when I first started. These days I tend to avoid pole work and stick to very slow, stretchy floor work style shows. This keeps me off the heels for most of the time I'm on stage, and is basically like a yoga workout. It has helped my back a ton. Just get a method down for being gentle when getting on and off your knees.

I also take my shoes off when giving lap dances, and have never had a complaint about this. I take them off when I go into the dressing room, too, so the only time I'm really on my heels is when I'm cruising around the club looking for a place to plop down. It all adds up.

Also, I got some really good supportive tennis shoes to wear when I'm not at work, and I take long walks with the dog with them on. It helps a lot with the stiffness in my back when I have managed to overdo it at work.

God, I've turned into such an old lady! haha

I always always take my shoes off during lap dances. I kept them on for like, my first three shifts and remember complaining about it to another girl, who informed me that "nobody keeps theirs on..."

Stretch your calves like crazy. Every time your shoes come off, do a few calf stretches. Wearing heels tightens them up really badly, I find I'm less sore now that I take the time to stretch.

Seconding doing research on the multi. I used to take one and didn't think it did shit, then read about how they sometimes don't even break down. Switched to chewable ones and have felt better.

Do see a chiropractor. I was in a car accident a couple years ago and still get the occasional pain. Was always like "i'll tough it out" then went to see a chiro recently and I feel all straight again. It's great.

I've been having sciatica pain because I haven't been working out and because I've been wearing my flip flops everywhere.

Wearing my five finger vibram shoes always puts a dent in that pain so I've been wearing those today.

Otherwise, magnesium and potassium, the chiropractor, a LOT of water and good quality sleep with black out curtains.

Sounds like your knee locked up. I've had that happen a few times. It happens a lot because of how you lower your body
in relation to your knees. If you cock out your calves and lower yourself, like when you're on someone's lap, or when you're
squat a bit on stage or to talk to someone at a table-- that puts a LOT of repetitive stress on your knees.

So, stretch out the legs, figure out what repetitive movements are hurting you and then stop doing those things (at least so much),
and rub your tendons, not just your muscles.

Unfortunately, you might need to consider ending your dancing.

I've had this weird random pain issue with one side of my lower back/ass, and it crops up if I even walk much. It's a sharp shooting pain, and I can feell the stiffness.

This has been an issue for a year, and with these types of problems, there seems to be no cure. Once it crops up, it's with you for life, and only gets worse.

I haven't been able to walk normally for a year, can't use stairs, and have to be careful to stand up and shake my legs out, because tightness is a big issue for me as well.

I've never seen a doctor or a chiropracter, etc about these issues, because they seem to only temporarily ease the pain, but end up making the issue worse.

It's kind of depressing to know that you'll never really be able to move much again, but some people are just unlucky enough to have the bad genes/anatomy.

(My mother is always having back issues as well, so I know it's genetics in my case.)

It's a big life adjustment. You'll have to not focus on people who can be active. You have to get used to a sedentary lifestyle.

I'm only 22, so this isn't easy for me, but I'm trying to accept the hand of cards life dealt.

Sorry you're going through this as well.

Try to stay as light and thin as possible...less stress on joints and back.

if you've never been to a chiropractor or a doctor about the pain, how do you know?

I agree that you would have to find a doctor who wants to treat the root cause, and not the symptom which can be a problem nowadays, but a good one should be able to give you some ideas of what it could be, as well as some stretches to do at home.

How much moving around do you do besides at work? I find that I sit around a lot, or lay in the same positions when at home (as I did when I danced) and even though I had short bursts of activity, compared to the amount of time I spent at home watching tv, or reading, or being on the computer-- I still spent way too much time on my butt.

However, for the OP-- it sounds like you have repetitive stress that's damaging your body. Doesn't mean it's permanent, but you do need to get to the root cause to work around it, rest your body, and hopefully recondition with stretches and specific exercises to strengthen your body. And, of course, not repeatedly doing the same maneuvers over and over again that cause that pain.

The other thing about going to the chiropractor is a lot of people only go until the pain stops, not until they're completely fixed. Getting a joint back into enough of proper alignment to stop the pain is good, but getting the joint back to exactly where it is supposed to be so the pain doesn't happen again is a lot better.

Thanks for the responses. Unfortunately, taking my shoes off is out. In Texas, taking your shoes off in a strip club is considered prostitution, or something. I'm not sure, I haven't really asked, but it seems to be the one rule that my club is set on enforcing.

I used to go to a chiropractor for chronic headaches, and it was starting to make a difference (and I got 30 minute neck massages twice a week included in the copay for the appointment!), but I moved and learned to just control stress. I really liked the chiropractor, and since I moved back, I'm going to go back to him. Does chiropractic work help with sciatica pain?

I've felt pretty good this week, taking a multi (but now I want to look into a chewable one, even though I much prefer swallowing pills than having to taste something), MSM, fish oil, glucosamine/chondroitin, AA complex, and biotin. I went to the gym twice and I started a new vanilla job that requires me to sit at a desk for 2-3 hours at a time. I haven't gone to work in about a week and a half, but I'm planning on going tomorrow.

As for at work: I'm clueless about the pole, so my stage shows usually just consist of posing against it, moving around on the floor, flirting and talking with customers from the stage. I'd like to learn ways to do sexier floorwork shows, because I tend to look a little awkward :-) I've started avoiding putting weight on my knees, mostly because of the bruises and the creaky knees. I usually plop myself down on people's laps rather than squatting, but I don't spend enough time in the dressing room to have enough time to take my shoes off for a bit.

I think I'll get some of those vibram five finger shoes... my BF and I have been talking about them for a while, and I'd like to quit wearing flip flops all the time. I'll also start stretching more effectively before work and after work. I'm still planning on only working two night a week, but I'd like for those two nights to not take a massive toll on me.

    Thanks for all the suggestions!

Have you ever heard of the Gonstead method of chiropractic?

I used to be an elite athlete, so my body is all kinds of torn up too. I've seen SEVEN different chiropractors over the last six years, because I believe in the idea of how chiropractic works. I moved last fall and had several people tell me about this one Dr. and how he's different than the others, so I tried it.

It's so freaking different, and my body is actually getting fixed! The structure of my spine is becoming realigned, and with that, the discs are growing back, bone spurs are disappearing, and my nervous system is functioning better ever day (which means less sickness, less arthritis & inflammation, and LESS PAIN).

It's not some weird thing, it's just BETTER chiropractics. More rigorous training, and more specific adjustments. Trust me when I say you want to try this out.

http://www.gonstead.com/ and http://www.gonsteadseminar.com/ are websites to find Gonstead Dr.'s near you.

I hope there's one close to you!!! I know sometimes girls don't tend to listen to listen to others' personal experiences on this website, they just ask for help and then do whatever they were going to do all along anyway... which is why i never post anymore... but I digress.

Along with proper eating & supplements and limiting my exposure to harmful chemicals (which is all a whole 'nother can of worms), Gonstead Chiropractic has changed my life completely. I went from a severely debilitated, depressed, suicidal shred of a human dealing with an overwhelming blinding daily pain, to a generally happy spirit full of love and light like I was before. I hope some of you other ladies can benefit from it also

Oh, and LibraSnake... you're completely, 100%, absolutely, totally wrong. You do NOT have to live with chronic pain. You don't. I mean, if someone is stupid enough not to try every option (ahem.. spinal manipulation, learning proper body mechanics and proper nutrition. Having true dedication to their health.), maybe they'll have to deal with that, but I do not. The body is a miraculous thing. If you give it the tools to heal itself, it will! Every time . I am living proof.

Educate yourself, please. And stop spreading this BS hopelessness.

Thanks for the suggestion, Sunny. I went to the Gonstead website to see if there were any practitioners in my area, and there are 7! I'll call around tomorrow and see if anyone takes my insurance and what to expect from co-pays and how many times a week I'd need to go for appointments. The most interesting thing to me was the idea that discs can grow back. Is that true? My boyfriend has a degenerative disc in his back, and there have been days when he was nearly paralyzed. It's getting worse and worse and it will continue to. We're not able to do all the things we used to do, like hiking all day and rock-climbing and kayaking and weekend bicycling trips. One time overusing his body will put him on bedrest for two days. It SUCKS. And he's a big baby about the doctor and his options [1.) a table that essential pulls his hips away from his torso to slightly pull apart the vertebrae and let the remainder of the disc go back in place and stop hitting surrounding nerves and 2.) surgery]. But every person only gets ONE body, and you have to take care of it! And when things go wrong, exhaust your options to fix it! I agree that chronic pain does not just have to be dealt with. Not when there are options and medical advancements out the wazoo!

Girl, one of my discs in my lower was nearly gone. The vertebrae would have fused in just a couple of years if i hadn't gotten proper care!!! It's now fully grown back, after about four months of treatments. Most people don't know that if the structure of the spine is corrected, the disc will no longer be squished out of place and will have room to grow back. I was so amazed after seeing the X-rays that I cried a little . All of the other Dr.'s I had been to didn't support the idea that discs can grow back, and here it was, my disc all grown back on this X-ray right in front of me. My lower back still gives me trouble after work sometimes, but I ice it and take care of it and its good to go by the next day. My body mechanics still haven't caught up to the structural changes. And I still have some serious neck issues that aren't quite there yet, but it's better and better every day!

My Dr. tells me all the time... it took a while for your body to get like this, it' going to take a while for it get better. It's a process . And I'm already worlds better than I was before!

I hope you can get your bf in there soon. Chiropractors can work with spinal problems as long as the disc still exists. If you ignore the problem too long and the vertebrae fuse, there's nothing they can do to fix that area.
