Default Tiered Internet Bandwidth Charges gain support of FCC

    from

(snip)"The Federal Communications Commission is drawing the ire of Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) for its support of tiered broadband Internet plans, which FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said Tuesday would be “healthy and beneficial” for broadband and high-tech industries

Speaking during a cable industry trade show in Boston today, Genachowski was responding to an issue brought up by Michael Powell, a former FCC chairman and current chief executive of the National Cable and Telecommunications Association. Powell said cable providers would like to be able to experiment with pricing plans based on tiers. Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA ) said last week it would experiment with new tiers, and raised the cap for users to 300 megabytes for the lowest tier, from 250 megabytes.

Representatives for services like Netflix and Hulu (NYSE: DIS ) have criticized the practice, saying users will be punished for watching streaming video service, as Comcast said in an FCC filing that, when its network becomes congested, it will temporarily slow traffic to customers requiring the most bandwidth — and that means streaming video watchers.

Many argue that the caps Comcast would seek to impose have less to do with network management and more to do with protecting Comcast’s pay-TV business by discouraging customers from spending a lot of time watching TV online.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is also crying foul over how Comcast isn’t counting video use of its own XFinity services against data plans, giving it an unfair advantage over streaming competitors."(snip)

In case this isn't clicking, camgirls are 'streaming video transmitters' and webcam customers are 'streaming video watchers' !

And a 300 megabytes per month limit before forced slowdowns or additional ISP charges kick in more or less equals 60-90-120 minutes worth of typical video stream.

Depending on how this may actually be implemented, in the forced slowdown mode once a camgirl has transmitted her 300 megabyte monthly 'quota' her ISP speed is likely to be capped at a rate which makes a video stream impossible to watch.

Under a tiered rate structure, once a camgirl exceeds her 300 megabyte monthly 'quota' ( which could easily happen on the second day of the month ), additional ISP bandwidth charges would start being added to her monthly bill. Of course it still remains to be seen whether FCC approved tiered bandwidth surcharges will amount to $10 per month, or $10 per day, or $10 per hour, for high bandwidth customers.

Actually that could be the first DAY of the month. I know on days the I cam I go through literally around 2 gb. That's on cam 5 hrs. Now usually when I cam I also watch something on the internet to keep me from looking "bored". I also do some major uploading to c4s. So its not unheard of for me to go through 5 gb in a day when I camming.

My country is not in the "top" at least I didn't see it in when I googled, but I get unlimited landline calls, 80mbit down 25mbit up, (I always get the max. upload somtimes the download is down to 50 only, but that's still quite fast) and 50+ tv channels for 27ish dollars.

As far as I know only the mobile internet services have limits.

So many things suck here, but at least the internet is good and cheap. (It depends thou, the minimum wage here is at the current conversion is 272$ so for those on the minimum wage it's an expensieve luxorious service. My mom as a senior accountant makes under 500$ a month. So yea.)

No, this isn't going to pass. Too many companies depend on people staying glued to the internet all the time. They will win; this is the future, dammit! What do they expect people to do, suddenly stop going online and... do something else?!?

I have a decent company... Can't tell you how many times I have watched movies and cammed. No problems - but then again, I let that company know my job was working at home and I would have high bandwidth before hand.

^^^ well, if this is approved by the FCC, the question really won't involve 'system' limited upload / download speeds. Instead it will involved artificially imposed speed limitations based on the tiered rate / monthly bandwidth limit that the ISP's customer chooses to pay for. Where US camgirls and certain US ISP's are concerned, this could become a significant new expense. And where potential US webcam customers are concerned, this could potentially change the present 'market dynamic' if those customers must officially select, and pay additional monthly ISP fees, for sufficient speed and bandwidth to view live video streams ( i.e. explaining to the wife why their cable modem internet bill is going from $40 per month to $200 per month ).

Or youtube??? Or the manufacturers of all the technology people buy to use this stuff? Vudu's new dvd cloud you can stream all your movies from? They have lobbyists too. It seems like all those companies could easily squash comcast's little tantrum
    Yes, I'm real.
