Default Montreal clubs down 45 percent thanks to student strike.

In Montreal strip clubs business is down 45 percent thanks to students protests I hear. Anyone here work in Montreal? Can you confirm that? I wonder how many dancer/students are on strike for that matter. For the record I support the students, but I do feel bad for dancers losing income.

It's not that the dancers are students, it's rather the violence and lawlessness that accompanies the demonstrations. Most of the demonstrations have been in the city centre (where most of the clubs are). Few patrons want to have their cars parked on the street where the hoodlums are liable to trash them.

My contacts suggest that the so called violence is greatly over blown. In fact most of the violence is being done by the police, with some police trying to frame the students for it. I've also heard thier has been sexual harrassment used by the Police against the students.

I have heard nothing but shit about montreal lately. Try ottawa/gatineau if you are hot, you can make big bucks working downtown ottawa. On another note, those students need to grab a brain and stop whining and realise that they pay LESS THAN HALF of what students in the rest of the country pay. My tuition in ontario is 7k a year. They need to stfu and appreciate how privileged and lucky they are.

They're so "priveledged" as you say because they fought for it, were as you and your fellow Ontario students did not, which is why you pay so much and they don't. To the bold go the spoils. This isn't the first student's strike, Quebecers have fought back against tuition increases in Quebec since the Quebec Revolution, which is why for a half century they've enjoy lower tuition, while in Ontario students didn't fight back like that and have the highest tuition in Canada.

Maybe you should start organizing with your student union now for a strike here, so that you can push Dalton to lower your debt burden.

Of course things are overblown; the red-square thugs go around smashing windows of businesses (you know, the sorts of businesses that pay the taxes that support the red-square thugs) and a few red-square thugs get a well-deserved crack with a club. It's all good fun, unless it's your car that got trashed because the "students" think you have too much money if you drive a nice car. That said, attendance in the clubs appears to be down. I wasn't aware that accurate stats were being kept in order to measure the downturn at precisely 45% (the tax authorities would certainly be interested in someone is compiling such stats); maybe it's 5% maybe it's 50%. The club I attend was quite full the evening I went (about 2 weeks ago) and my dancer said she didn't notice much of a decrease in her business.

At the risk of bringing the thread off-topic...and I will take it because I feel strongly about this issue...students in ontario do protest, every year. We have drop fees marches in toronto and in ottawa. For some reason Quebec students get listened to and we don't...hmmmm I wonder why that could be? I support lower tuition costs accross canada. I support university being accessible to all canadians that are qualified. I do NOT support one province and one group of students being favoured and having access to ridiculously cheap tuition while tuition rates in other parts of the country make post-secondary education unaccessible to many students. I certainly don't support those same students who already get favourable treatment in regards to tuition costs, complaining about it when their government wants to increase their tuition to a level that is still going to be so much lower than in every other province...why do they think they are so special that they should be entitled to the same degree as other canadian students at a fraction of the cost?

You do realize that its not thier fault that your tuition is so high right? I mean your tuition isn't calculated based on thiers. The Quebec government spends more on university tuition for historical and cultural reasons. Back in the day, before my time, it was rare for a Franophone to be able to get a university education and so accessible education became a huge symbol for french Canadian about the future and survival of thier culture, it became an ingrained value the way universal healthcare is in Anglo Canada. In fact the students ideal would be free universal education for everyone. Like they have in the Nordic countries. Or even Mexico (yep third world Mexico has free university education, shouldn't we be proud.)
