    Default Problems cashing SM paycheck

I went to Publix this afternoon to cash my check from SM. Ive cashed my SM check there 3 times already and today the lady, the same lady who cashed the other checks, told me they cannot cash checks from this company! I was just like WTF and left and tried to cash it at Walmart. I didnt want to stick around and figure out why the sudden change because I really didnt feel like talking about what kind of company it is..and what not.

Walmart also couldnt cash my check so I ended up going to cash it at Amscot, which I was reluctant to go to because they take so much out of the check! Anyways...

Does SM do direct deposit? I was thinking that maybe it would be easier for me to get a Walmart or Amscot card for direct deposit so I dont have to deal with cashing a check. I don't have a bank account either. Or maybe should I just go ahead with Daily Pay? I didnt think it would be a good idea because I only make $100 a day and sometimes less.

    What should I do??

Or you could get a Payoneer card and have it deposited to that?

Streamate pays via payoneer. Daily pay does as well. If you want a payoneer card for your sm account you can sign up through streamate. They pay weekly on Fridays

Warning: Payoneer has crazy fees. Especially if you are taking out small-ish amounts all the time.

Seriously, just get a bank account. Normal people have bank accounts.

The payoneer card fees are not really much worse than the $40/week direct deposit fee. $3-$5 per load + ~$3something per ATM removal

If she owes money to Wells Fargo or is in any form of legal undertaking (buying a house, bankruptcy, etc.), its best not to open anything. And anyway, if you owe money to a bank, you are likely in Chexsystem and don't qualify for a bank account anywhere.

Best bet would be to get a Payoneer card and have it loaded for $3-$5 a week. If you want direct deposit, then try a prepaid card like Account Now where you can do ACH (but not wire).

You can get payoneer for the time being....but you really should get a bank account and sort that stuff out! I know it sucks when you are going through financial stuff, but the sooner you sort it out, the faster you can start building up credit, and the easier your future will be.
I take cash, debit or credit. I just don't take shit.

Thank you. I will look into Account Now or just pay off Wells Fargo. I believe I only owe about $100 unless it went up.

Yeah I'm going to try to pay off Wells Fargo. I really dont think I owe that much unless it went up. Thank you.

Oh awesome! Yeah, if you don't owe much, then it is definitely a good idea to just get it dealt with and then start re-building your credit! I don't know what you have been paying on cashign checks, but I know that it is usually quite a bit - I bet you've paid as much as you owe in charges by now! Eeep!!

And life will be so much easier with a bank account! Good luck - fingers crossed that it is as little as you think!

Streamate charges $40 for direct deposit?!?

I completely second ManyRose's advice to get the Wells Fargo debt sorted-a day's earnings for you and you'll be done with it
As a general question though, which does somewhat pertain to Charlie's question about sm payment methods...if one doesn't want to wait for an sm check to be mailed, could one not get paid by sm through payoneer and then get ACH from payoneer to one's bank account? For someone living in the US, wouldn't they save about $35 per week that way (a $3-$6 payoneer charge for ACH vs. $40 from sm directly)?

sorry for the threadjack, I'm just shocked that direct deposit is so expensive on sm!

(Loveshooks, SM doesn't offer direct deposit... the direct deposit fee quoted above is for going through Payoneer. To the best of my knowledge. Please correct me if I am wrong.)

I apologize for my insensitive-sounding post above, regarding 'normal people' having bank accounts.

I should have taken the time to write out my thoughts more coherently... but I pretty much agree with the above posts by MR and Loveshooks. $100 of debt is not THAT much... I really think that the best course of action is just to bite the bullet and get it dealt with, pronto. Do whatever it takes.... it might take eating ramen for a month, but this is soooo important. You will be SO relieved when you have it all taken care of. But if you don't, then interest payments and fees for check cashing, payoneer, etc, will just whittle away and whittle away at your income.....

Exactly how ManyRoses said: in no time at all, you will have paid more in fees than you owed on the original Wells Fargo debt.

I apologize for sounding insensitive, but it really really hurts my heart to see women (people in general) being taken for a ride on the treadmill of debt, fees, and interest.

Wells Fargo, Payoneer, and anyone else who is charging you fees, they are all out to GET YOU. They all want a piece of YOUR PIE. Please... protect your money. KEEP IT FOR YOURSELF. YOU earned it. It is YOURS!

Once you have a bank account set up, receiving and cashing paper checks from SM is FREE. Free is good. :-)

One of my banks is wells fargo and they hate SM checks. There is always a frigging hold on mine if I deposit there. I hate Wells.

As far as not being able to cash our checks, "paper checks" are questionable. Since SM banks oversea and our bank times are different they can not communicate with the system through Wallyworld etc, a check cashing joint would not touch it AFTER calling streamate bc they need to communicate with the bank in Cyprus.

    Personally I love paper checks.

Unfortunately with all the assholes of the world "paper checks" are now considered questionable. Im keeping my paper check and go to a different bank to cash/deposit it.

I feel your pain, I went through it 6 months ago

Oh gosh, then once I pay off Wells Fargo I will not be re-opening an account with them. smh. Hopefully whatever bank I choose will not cash it without any problems. *sigh*

Open a checking account with a local bank, credit union or at worst, a regional bank. Deposit your checks when you receive them. Don't wait.

Actually it is BECAUSE of a bank that I am being taken for a ride on the treadmill of debt, fees, and interest. I HATE banks. Freaking necessary evils.

I go to a small credit union that only has three branches. They were putting a 5-day hold on the checks. They did that for the first two months. I was getting paid weekly, so that was 8 checks of consistent amounts. I opened a savings account, deposited a large chunk of money and just added to it for the 8 weeks.

After that, I spoke to a manager and asked her to put a note on the account that says not to hold the checks. I told her I could show her statements from my last credit union when I used to deposit the checks. Now every teller can see the note on the account, and they no longer bat an eyelash when I bring in my checks.

I know not every financial institution is like that, but I generally find that while smaller credit unions might be more careful in the beginning, they're generally more accommodating in the long run.

^^Really, Justanother? May I ask which bank?

I know what you mean... increasingly, banks are getting sketchier about fees too. I had a recent situation with my CIBC account where they charged me a ridiculous fee for moving cash between my own sub-accounts. I rarely use my CIBC accounts anymore now that I live in the states, so it was a total surprise.... AND my account OVERDRAFTED because I didn't have enough in there to cover this mystery fee that I had no clue existed. I called them and they told me "Oh yeah... we have this new fee. We mailed you a letter telling you all about it." Ummmm... yes, I'm sure you did.... to my PARENTS' HOUSE! I argued with them, and finally was able to get them to refund me the mystery transfer fee, PLUS the overdraft fee.

I agree with you though... the big banks are getting slimier. :-( Best course of action, in my opinion:
-go with the cheapest, no-frills checking/savings accounts.
-if you can get the monthly fee waived for keeping a minimum balance, do that. DONT FORGET WHAT THAT MINIMUM BALANCE IS, and always keep a buffer just in case (50-100$?)
-if you qualify for another type of no-fee checking account (because you're a student, or something), definitely do that.
-KNOW what the associated transaction fees are.

If you are charged some bullshit fee, even if it's legit because you screwed up in one way or another, fight it.

If everything else fails, it's amazing what you can accomplish with the following line: "Hi, I have been a user of ABC Bank for the last x years. I would really hate to have to take my business elsewhere over a small fee like this."

    :-)

(Ughhhhh.... GOD, I hate fees!!!!! LOL!)

    How can she?

Like GlamourRouge said, Charlie is very likely blocked from any and all banks now.

You can check out banks with second chance banking also. Do you have a Woodforest national Bank Around? I oay a $8 monthly fee for one year but thats it. No more than cashing a check would cost. My local branch is great because they know some deposits may come in under an alias. Godd luck hun!
