I'll offer this 'unprofessional' opinion. Virtually every 'specialist' doctor, from pediatric to coronary to plastic surgery, faces malpractice suits on a somewhat regular basis. All of the 'large breast implant' plastic surgeons I have used over the years faced multiple malpractice suits at one time or another. IMHO this is a 'trade-off' that is unavoidable when the doctor is trying to accomplish 'major' results in a single procedure.
In this specific context, the 'trade-off' involves a 'large breast implant' plastic surgeon and a 'willing' patient attempting to go from say zero to 650cc in a single surgery. Given the larger area to be dissected, the larger degree of skin stretching etc. it's no surprise that an occasional 'complication' may arise perhaps 1-2% of the time. On the flip side, 98% of the 'willing' patients get the results they were looking for at the cost of a single surgery and are 'back at work' within a few weeks.
Minimizing the risks of dissecting a larger area, a larger degree of skin stretching etc., a 'by the ASPRS book' plastic surgeon would limit the patient to say 350-400cc during a first surgery ... and after 6 months perform a second surgery to get to 650cc. This of course involves greater expense for the patient, a longer period of 'waiting' before the patient's desired results are achieved etc. But it also leaves the 'by the ASPRS book' plastic surgeon essentially invulnerable to potential malpractice suits. On the flip side, patient risk from operating room exposure to infections, to an anesthesia reaction etc. are doubled due to the two surgeries ... but the plastic surgeon can't be sued for these sort of complications. And of course two surgeries also means more total time off from 'work'.
IMHO this is just another aspect of the 'defensive medicine' syndrome which permeates the US health care system in general. Deviating from the 'ASPRS book' in order to try and achieve 'major' results for a willing patient by definition increases the probability of successful malpractice lawsuits. And compared to some of the malpractice awards that I have seen over the years ( I used to work as a Respiratory Therapist in hospitals before becoming a dancer / camgirl ), 1/4 mil is 'chicken feed'.
However, I never considered the existance of malpractice suits per se to reflect negatively on the talents / skills of the 'large breast implant' specialist plastic surgeons I have used over the years. Of much more importance to me was the surgeon's skill level and 'past performance' involving the type / size of implants that I was personally interested in, as well as the doctor's attention level toward small medical details. And as the one paying for the surgery and losing income while recovering from surgery, I was happy that there are still a few plastic surgeons out there who are still willing to go beyond what the 'ASPRS book' recommends as 'safe, conservative' limits. But again this is just my personal opinion.
