Hi gang,
I'm on Wellbutrin for smoking cessation. I've been on it for about 12 days and I still like smoking. I also haven't lost that much weight.
How long does it take to kick in/how long were you on it before it started to work?
Thanks!

Love the screen name.
I wonder why it hasn't kicked in yet. Maybe the dosage is too low? How many mgs were you on?

careful with that shit, it gave me a seizure and side effects for months after.

Hmmmm..... I'm wondering how do you know if you've had a seizure? Do you feel something coming on, precipitating it? What if you had one in your sleep? I've felt electric shock type feelings through my brain when taking certain medications. I've also felt what I can only describe as a shiver through my brain, like that chills down your back shiver/tremor feeling, but mental. Hard to explain. I wonder what the f that is, if it's related to a seizure. I wonder what a seizure feels like or looks like from the outside.
JD, what you are describing sounds like "brain zaps". This is one of the side effects of Wellbutrin, and it is my understanding that they are not the same as seizures but I could be wrong. They are commonly experienced when going off the medication, especially if you are stopping cold turkey and not tapering off.
Wellbutrin does lower your seizure threshold (as do many other antidepressants), but by how much depends on the dose you are taking. 150mg is on the low end. You should be careful with drinking on Wellbutrin, as alcohol also lowers your seizure threshold so the two combined puts you more at risk.
I have been on Wellbutrin for depression and ADD for a long time now. I have never had a seizure, and I do still drink. Everyone is different, but for me Wellbutrin has really helped. I've tried other medications and experienced some pretty bad side effects, but with Wellbutrin I don't have any (except for when I forget to take it, and even then it's just minor things). I hope it works as well for you as it has for me.
ETA, here's some numbers I got from Wikipedia that has dose ranges with the associated seizure risk... "0.1% at 100–300mg of bupropion, 0.4% at 300–450mg, and 2% at 600mg. For comparison, the incidence of the first unprovoked seizure in the general population is 0.0003–0.00084%."
Also interesting... "Clinical depression itself was reported to increase the occurrence of seizures two-to-sevenfold compared with the general population; in this light, the above statistics could indicate that low to moderate doses of antidepressants, including bupropion, may actually have an anti-convulsive action."

I had the brain zaps when taking Buspar. Wellbutrin is like..... kind of amazing. It big time increased the quality of my sex life, I feel like I'm a virgin again, everything feels so much more intense and new. Is this normal? I also like that it's subtle, unlike Pristiq which gave me a massive anxiety attack and made me feel like I was on ecstasy but sans the euphoria. I am prescribed 50 mg per day of Dexedrine, that doesn't mean I always take it. So it's hard to single out what Wellbutrin is actually doing, but the sexual change was pretty significant.
Yes! Unlike most antidepressants, bupropion doesn't come with the loss of sex drive and difficulty orgasming. It has actually been reported to enhance them, and has been used in treating sexual dysfunction.
I experienced that when I first started taking it, but now I think my body is used to it. It is a big improvement on other antidepressants I've tried, where I couldn't have an orgasm if my life depended on it.
I have taken Pristiq before. I liked it ok, the only problem is when I first start taking it I have a very hard time sleeping. That first week I would be up for days. With my bad habit of forgetting to take my meds, it was too much of a pain to go through that everytime I forgot or let my prescription lapse.
