    Exclamation Permanent Sterilization/Contraceptive

The only birth control method I use is condom usage, and ideally WITH the pullout method and according to fertility cycle.

I don't use pills because I don't want to gain weight, lose my libido, or get all emotional and crap.

Nor do I use IUDs because they usually make periods heavier and worse, and mine are already nightmarish.

I'm ABSOLUTELY certain that I NEVER want to have kids....EVER. So I'm thinking of permanent sterilization.

Not only do I want that, I want a procedure that also stops periods (Novasure).

Has anyone here gotten these done? Did you have any side effects like pain or weight gain? I'm 22, so would I have to deal with pushy, judgmental medical "experts" ASSuming that I couldn't possibly make a clear decision at 22, and to suffer from all these womanly shit in case I ever surrender to becoming a baby factory?

    Thanks.

My mom had novasure done but.only because she is premenopause and already had three kids and her tubes tied 14 years ago. Her periods are now irregular and still heavy so they did the novasure procedure. I also wanted to get a more permanent birth control (I am on the pill) but novasure is not actual birth control, you can still get pregnant but probably with complications (I read novasure website for my mom). I can't recommend any other than IUD or implanon because I have been told anything more permanent is not recommended until a certain age. And definitely do NOT use novasure for birth control it is not used for this purpose.

Noooo. Novasure would be done WITH or AFTER the actual sterilization.

The actual permanent birth control I was considering is Adiana.

If miamia's summary is correct and you won't be able to use Novasure for birth control, then I would encourage you to try the pill or an IUD. Everyone's experience is different. Personally, I haven't experienced weight gain or crazy emotions and I've been on the pill since 2007. I wasn't sexually active when I went on the pill, so I can't really judge my before/after libido very well. However, I'm on Ortho-Novum right now and my sex drive is normal to high. I too am very strongly set against having children and I simply wouldn't trust only condoms--or rather, I wouldn't trust the guy wearing the condom to put it on right, have the correct size, keep it on, etc. I like being able to wake up every morning, take a pill, and know that I'm doing my part to control my own fertility. I'd rather have a permanent solution too, but I am not up for invasive procedures.

As a further question: wouldn't procedures that stop periods fuck with your body more than the pill supposedly does? I'm pretty uninformed on them, so if anyone has more knowledge, I'd love to know. I intend to marry my current SO and he's not opposed to getting a vasectomy, so we'll probably go that route, but it's still good to know all our options.

Edit: Just saw your response to miamia... Making this post kind of useless.

Yes only a doctor can set up a procedure for novasure and if the Dr doesn't recommend the procedure you can visit another, but I am not sure if they will go ahead with the procedure @ your age. The birth control you mentioned I haven't heard of but will look into it. There are A LOT of different kinds of pills for instance I was on othro-tri-cylen and it gave me weird white spots all over my skin on my back it was so weird and freaked me out so I got put on a low estrogen pill (microgestin) and have NO symptoms at all. I would suggest trying different types of birth control and be honest with Dr or physician so they can recommend the best option based on your symptoms and lifestyle.

Personally I wouldn't chose adiana just because I have no problem with the pill I'm on now (lutera) or taking it everyday. My pills are free and I am told reduce my risk for ovarian cancer. I am not comfortable with the risks of the Asians, it may not work the first time and takes months before you know if it works, and its pricey (since my pills are free). Just depends on what are your pros and cons. Good luck with everything.

Mirena IUD's can reduce your period to the point you no longer have them. I haven't had a period in 6 years.

You may have trouble finding a doctor who will install one for a woman who has never had a child, but it's not impossible (as other posters have detailed in the past). The Mirena IUD is statistically as effective as tubiligation in preventing pregnancy.

Most doctors will be VERY hesitant or refuse to permanently sterilize a young woman (under 35) and especially a 22 year old woman.

Yes doctors will be very reluctant to perform sterilization on a girl at your age. Iud can reduce periods but of course like all women know birth control will affect everyone differently. The depo shot was to reduce my periods, but not only did I still get them but they would just show up without symptoms and stain my good clothes! My friend got on depo and had her period for over a month and became anemic as a result. My sister got on depo shot and doesn't have a period anymore. So the IUD will be like any birth control, reduce periods on one person and increase on another. Just the way it is and only way to find out is to try it, at least you can remove the IUD if it doesn't work out.

Not quite. The Mirena generally reduces periods. Copper IUDs usually make periods heavier.

I talked to my doctor about it extensively before I chose the Mirena, and that is one of the primary reasons why I chose it.

SOME other people have increases in their period with merena just because its 'generally' affecting women a certain way does not make it the same for all.

I had a copper IUD for a little over 2 years, because I am very sensitive to synthetic hormones, and my periods were HELL. I have heard that Mirena is great, but not knowing how your body reacts to synthetic hormones makes it difficult to predict how it would work for you. Also, it is expensive and if it turns out to not be right for you it would suck to have wasted that money and feel "stuck" with it.

My sister had mirena and got an infection because of it, they removed it as soon as discomfort started. I don't see how she would be 'stuck' with mirena. Just make an appointment and explain any issues and have removed.?

I guess I mean if she were to spend money she might have to save on Mirena instead of on surgery, then she might have to wait even longer to have a permanent procedure.

Ya but everyone is different, some plans cover most birth control and I know mine is free. Depends on an individuals options and preferences along with their physicians recommendations, I know many that would never do a sterilization on me and my age with no children.

But they tend to cause weight gain. I don't want that, lol.

I'd be amazed if a doctor, a PROFESSIONAL, would refuse medical procedures purely based on their PERSONAL biases towards women being baby factories. I would sue for that, that's none of their business.

I haven't heard of Mirena causing weight gain. It hasn't been any issue for me.
In your OP, you say that you don't want to use birth control pills "because I don't want to gain weight, lose my libido, or get all emotional and crap." I didn't experience any of that with birth control pills. You may want to try birth control pills while you look for a doctor to sterilize you (just as an added protection against pregnancy until you find one to do it). Just an idea.

While I understand you feel that doctors shouldn't make decisions based on their personal biases, that's not how the real world works. Doctors don't actually have any obligation to do anything that is against their personal beliefs. (Especially elective surgery that is not life-saving) Doctors refuse to perform medical procedures all the time for a variety of reasons.

Instead of threatening to sue a doctor for not sterlilizing you, it would be better to just keep looking for one who will. You wouldn't want someone working on you who didn't believe in what they're doing, or were "forced" to do a procedure. I'm sure you'll find a willing one if you keep looking.

I used Mirena for 3 years.
Pretty awesome stuff. No periods. Didn't make me fat or crazy.

I don't think I saw it mentioned, but they have that implant thing you put in your arm.
One of my fellow coworkers has it and she loves it. She has no periods too.

Just want to add that my 40 year old aunt had a tubal ligation reversed when she remarried and was pregnant within 6 months. I think more physicians are aware of this option now and are not quite as hesitant to perform "permanent" sterilization on childless individuals.

I also never want to have children but have given up on getting sterilized. I'm pushing 30, married, and have had 2 abortions. Obviously I'm just too dumb to realize why women exist.

Tinyjezebel, did your Mirena fail after 3 years? Or did you get it removed because you decided to have a child? I'm leaning towards getting a copper IUD just because they're supposed to last much longer than Mirena.

I've had the Mirena for about a year and love it. Periods have dwindled to almost nothing and I never have to think about it. I was always sensitive to hormonal birth control, too, but this is such a low dose that it hasn't had any effect on me.

    Echoing other posters above:

    Please consider the Mirena IUD.

The level of hormones it contains will most likely make your periods lighter or eliminate them altogether.

Also, the amount of hormone is much less than with the oral contraceptive pill, and the hormones remain LOCALIZED for the most part, so you should not experience the systemic side effects of weight gain, mood changes, etc.

And FYI, docs do not 'refuse to sterilize young women because of their PERSONAL biases'. They do so because there is a very high STATISTICAL PROBABILITY that a woman aged 38 might regret the decisions she made at 22. There is nothing "personal" at work here, just data.

I feel like I'm repeating myself about this all the time, but I have a copper IUD and I *love* it. Just like with Mirena, some women experience heavier or lighter periods. I've had mine in for a few years now and my periods are significantly lighter. I haven't gained weight, I don't have to remember to take a pill, I'm not putting hormones into my body (not that its bad, its just something I don't want to do), no mood swings, no ...anything really. I don't even think about it unless its check-ups at the doctor to make sure the strings are still there or hearing other women's horror stories about their birth control. Officially copper IUDs are supposed to stay in for 5 years but my doctor told me I can leave it in for longer without any negative consequences, so I plan to continue checking up on it once or twice a year and leaving it until I need to replace it.

If my experience with the copper IUD wasn't so positive I'd switch to Mirena in a heartbeat. IUDs are the closest I can get to permanent sterilization, which every doctor I've talked to so far refuses to provide. I'm 24, happily childless and have no interest in children now or ever.
Toronto-based, very rough draft, constantly asking for input!
