My son was born 9 weeks premature and spent 2 months in the NICU as well. Sometimes family members just don't know when to back off. I'm a full time student, living on my own, dancing on the weekends, and doing clinicals (free work) for school weekly. It's difficult and I never have enough money. Couple that with my other stresses and I can barely breathe sometimes, you know?
The best thing to do is create a long term plan (1-2 years) and set weekly, monthly, and quarterly goals. I'll show you an example of my set up and maybe you can mock something up for yourself to manage your stress:
My goals:
This week: Stay within budget, make it to class on time Thursday night, keep fighting with SO to a minimum, keep the house clean, be patient with my son.
Monthly: Pay off as much debt as possible, start my son's early intervention program, learn something new in school, visit autism center for therapy resources, have a date night with my SO, buy my son sandals.
Quarterly (next 3 months): Get my son into autism therapy ASAP, buy carpet steam cleaner, pay off all school tuition ($4,000 remaining), have a good summer, keep up with bills.
Yearly (next 12 months): Graduate school with straight A's, secure employment in my desired field, keep building credit, eliminate all debt, purge useless clutter from house, start house hunting.
I know I have SO much to do in the next year...but, based on my projections this time next year my life stress will be cut by about 2/3. I have a light at the end of the tunnel and know what I want.
Remember, watch your six.
If you are willing to do for one year what other's won't, you can spend a lifetime doing what other's cant.
