Default How to Not Put Dancing on a Resume and still Get a Job

How am I going to put 15 years of dancing on a resume? I am stuck right now and I am apprehensive about even trying to deal with interviews.. Is there anyone who has been a career dancer and has made it out of the business and found a decent job? I do have a degree but no related work experience. Any help or advice would be helpful. Thanks so much.

What kind of job are you applying for? You can always write it up as an "independent sales contractor", "entertainer", or "freelance marketing".

I used to work in HR and would tell stay at home moms who needed jobs to put their budgetary (check book balancing, work place maintenence (cleaning), supply purchasing (grocery shopping)... you get the idea, expereince on their resume. For Dancing, I would write, Consultant for XYZ [company you make up], or you could write that you were in school or traveling, if you did any of that.

    A resume entry might be
YEAR- YEAR [Independent] Consultant- City, State [Providence, Country etc]

Contract basis, sole proprieter [if appropriate]. Consistently set sales goals and consistently met or exceeded daily goals. Interacted with customers in varying industries to sell consultation contracts. Effectively established rapport with clientele. Worked closely with management at assignments to ensure presentations met the expectations of the clients. Etc. etc.

If they ask what you consulted on you can make something up that you learned in school, or you can say just say you helped coach them on [something that you are really good at explaining, if you do not have anything, find a book from the bookstore or an explaination video online and repeat what it has to say about the topic.

You mention you have a degree. Is this something you recently attained?? If you completed your degree years ago, it's pretty much considered irrelivant as too much time has passed since you completed it and things out in the world are constantly changing so much so that you're too far separated from what's been going on.

You may want to try going to an employment/temp agency that will send you out for 2-3 day assignments or if you're lucky, get something that will last a couple of weeks and when you've completed the assignment, would be able to put this on your resume. Temp agency standards aren't too strict, however, I'd polish up on my Microsoft Word and Excel knowledge as these agencies give spot tests to determine what your knowledge level is on computer software.

I'm surprised someone here has suggested bullshitting on your resume with rather "vague" experiences. I don't know how businesses do it from state to state, but these days if you get an interview and are successfully hired, the company will state that your employment with them is conditional on a successful background check. Background check include a credit check, criminal check, a check into your education background, as well as the list of referals.

You didn't mention what you're looking for in your post.

Since the OP asked how to put dancing on her resume, not how to get work experience, I helped her on how to put dancing on a resume. And say she gets the temp work now, how do you suggest she explain the last 15 years?

My advice is not the final say, but again I do have the Human Resource background to have hopefully provided her with some help. I am sure there are probably equally vaild suggestions other posters can give her to fill the 15 year gap.

Thank u all for ur help. Yes I was trying to figure out how to fill the past 15 years..yes, this was my mistake..I did have a couple low pay jobs over the years..but they didnt last bc the measly part time 200/week paychecks were unbearable..I always went back to dancing.. I didnt have a resume for those jobs...yes I recently completed a two year degree in Business..Thing is I hatee computers and my computer skills suck..i dont want a job doing that..sitting behind a desk all day..not something Im great at..I also wouldnt want to be a restaurant manager either..Working long hours etc....I was reading another thread about a girl who was making 600/month at a vanilla job..She had room for advancement but was miserable bc she was barely able to survive..Thats what Im scared of..Only being able to find low pay jobs that will insult me and make me feel like crap..Only problem is time is running out for me int he dancing business..I knew Id have a degree completed by my early 30s but I had no idea that by the time I got it it would be useless and we would b in a recession/depression.

if you have a friend with a decent job, maybe they can hook you up.

my old domme friend in the US wanted to get out of the adult scene but had the same problem. I told her to say she worked at my company under me (in Canada) which was relevant to what she wanted to do, and that i could be her reference.

she got the job, the company never called me...maybe because i was in a different country.

The second last job I applied for and got I told them I had an Ebay store- bullshitted about having a friend in China that shipped me stuff that I sold when they asked more about it.
I told the last employer that I had been a full time carer.
Actually that bit about being a carer is true (inconsistent disability though, no dramas for 8 months then there will be 3 weeks of intense therapy) , that was why I was a dancer for so long, it's the only job that would work in with my responsibilities, unfortunately I'm not really dancer material and the clubs have become more cut throat so those days are gone when you could just smile and stand in the middle of the room and make $400 with no effort. I also got sick of the Vampire hours and the travel so i had to give it up. I'm currently job hopping until I find one that fits in with my family's needs and responsibilities as successfully as the dancing did.
Might add I'm in Australia, so we do operate on a more casual level to you guys. No one would waste time or money on background checks beyond ringing the listed reference person for a job unless there was a lot of responsibilty involved, and you don't get one of those jobs without a good amount of experience.

I would advise against that. Sooner or later, it will come back to haunt you, especially if you apply for a position that requires letters of recommendations or references from past employers. Instead, in your resume include job skills you have obtained in the past not related to dancing. If you have a degree then you may have acquired social and academic skills applicable to a few positions you plan to apply for.

^ Thank u all for ur time..yea I dont think I can get a great paying job w a 2 year business degree..Anything would be entry level..And anyone searching thro my past isnt going to find a bunch of grand things..Part of me feels I should just stay in the bar business ..just transfer to waitress/eventual bartender...I know women who r n their late 40s who still bartend and they rnt even pretty..They r just tentative to customers and sweet women....These women r quite a bit older than me but still bc they r established bartenders have good clientele and make more than me when i am quite a bit younger..It isnt always about looks its about howm uch people like u and how u treat them...One thing I am struggling with is burn out..So some bar regs Im sure dont like me bc Im burnt out on them and they feel the same for me..Id want to start over elsewhere if possible.
