    Default Gold and Silver Coins

Out of Curiosity, does anyone collect these?

i understand they are sold over spot value and sometimes the investment just isn't there but does anyone collect?

i'm a pretty big geek and i collect them for their art, collectibility (low mintage sometimes), and their investment worth is just sort of a bonus to me.

    anyone else?

    I collect:
    Canadian Maple Leafs
    Chinese Panda's
    Australian Koala's
    Austrian Philharmonics
    England Britannia's

I want to collect the American Eagles but I find them kind of ugly though i know they are the most popular bullion coin.

As always, the numismatic value of gold and silver coins is occasionally a potential for future gain, but in the majority of cases the price premium for numismatic coins over bullion coins or bullion bars is a 'one way' losing investment. Personally I stick with 1oz gold bars in sealed packets ... they're the least expensive way to purchase the 1oz of gold, as well as the easiest to sell ( because if they remain in the sealed packet no assay / valuation is necessary ).

To illustrate my point, today's price for the gold bar is $1635, your philharmonic is $1656, your maple leaf is $1653, a bullion coin is $1644 etc. On the flip side, the buyback price for the gold bar, the philharmonic and the maple leaf is $1592, the bullion coin is $1585. These are based on a 'spot market' volume gold price of ~$1595.

Of course if you enjoy the coin collecting aspect, the numismatic price premium is a minor consideration. And, arguably, a year from now any of these options will be worth more than parking cash in a bank account at negligible interest rate.

well that's exactly it. I can easily go buy some 1oz bars from a private mint for much cheaper if it were a pure investment standpoint, but because I do enjoy the annual designs on these bullion coins, I will pay $$ over spot for the coin fully knowing i can find them cheaper and they really aren't worth what i paid for them (initially)

Down the road is a different story that isn't told yet.

but just to show what i'm talking about and why i don't mind paying a little over spot. They are beautiful, and they change designs every year. Every year they use the same theme but change the image, so the panda will look different next year.

But I like to buy 1 of each for every year in gold and in silver. different mints have different qualities. China's panda is .999 Fine Gold, while USA has a .9999 fine gold and Canada has a .99999 fine gold coin out (though it's considerably more than spot)

    Canadian Maple Leaf

    Austrian Philharmonic

    Australian Koala

    Chinese Panda (my fav)

^^^ understood ! Also I suspect that the new 'Special 5 x 9's' Canadian Maple may gain numismatic value due to it's 'rarity'.

Out of curiousity, which gold sellers do you use / trust ? Personally I've had good luck with Kitco ( ) and Tulving ( Gold )

^^^ it would appear that APMEX is fare more geared to the 'consumer' market ... they handle a lot more 'small denomination' ( thus smaller total dollar ) product offerings. Also their markups are higher i.e. their lowest 1oz gold bar price was $10 an oz higher thank Kitco i.e. $1645. Tulving is definitely geared towards 'investors' given their 20 ounce minimum per transaction, which also explains why their 1oz gold bar price can be $20 lower i.e. $1615 . Then again, not too many 'consumers' are prepared to spend $33,000 at a time on gold !!!

I effed up. My one and only gold coin is a Krugerrand that I bought in the early '80's for around $500. Worth several times that now. Wish I would have bought more gold in those days.

Once again I have embraced my addiction and have put off the moral dilemma to another day.

well I was lucky enough to purchase MANY ounces worth of gold bars at sub-$300 per oz prices right after the 9/11/2001 attack !!! In hindsight I wish I had been able to afford more.

i don't think it's too late. theres a few industry people that project silver to shoot up in price and at $28 spot right now, its a pretty affordable buy.
