    Duh climbing help

Ok, so ive been dancing for about 5 months and I still cannot seem to climb right! I always wear leg warmers, so this could be part of the issue. I can jump straight into an invert and do pole tricks, but when I climb.. it doesn't feel graceful. Any tips? Or videos that can help?

Yeah, I kinda figured it was the leg warmers that were messing me up. Which sucks because I love the way they look. Thank you! I will give this a try (:

I would recommend boots myself. I started wearing them to protect & support my joints - knees were bad even before I started dancing, & I have nvr mastered walking in stilettos. I have tried vinyl thigh high boots, & their grip is great, but I did crazy amts of pole work & they lasted less than 2 months b/c the pole tore them up. Got a nice pair of leather boots from a department store, & couldn't be happier with them. They are also not the standard 5"-or-more stripper heel so I can wear them w/ jeans OTC as well. 2 layers of knee high socks under them & you're in business - they not only protect your skin from the pole but from the hard floors if you do a lot of floor work. Interestingly, I also needed zero breaking-in time w/ either pair of boots, unlike the stilettos.

If you're going to try boots, get a pair of cheap ones first or borrow somebody else's before you drop a ton of money on them. I really don't like pole dancing in boots- some girls love it, some hate it. I find them too grippy for me, it ends up being more like a peel-and-stick thing for me and makes it tough to dance sexy. If they work for you, awesome.

I can't imagine doing anything with the leg warmers on- I wear them a lot but usually take them off on stage.

Thanks guys! (: I appreciate your advice. I'm going to try out a few different things and see what works for me. I tried it with no leg warmers the last night and....huge difference!

That's a good point. I found the vinyl boots were definitely a peel-&-stick deal, & a loud one at that, but real leather gave me all of the grip w/o the loud velcro-y like noise when I tried to disengage, & anytime I've gotten stuck on the pole wearing them it was b/c I got myself tangled around the damn thing rather than my boots not wanting to let go.

Legwarmers are going to make things difficult because you need to get a good grip using your inner thighs and the lower half of your legs. When you squeeze the pole with your legs, you should be able to just sit up there without holding on, this is what makes climbing effortless. When I climb the pole I let my legs do most of the work. The arms are just for pulling up between clamping and unclamping your legs.. it's hard to describe, here's a video so you can see what I'm talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=engpBxEhzas

I used to wear legwarmers any time I worked. I am strong and have always climbed the pole using upper body strength so I can climb with a Bra and jeans if need be. The issue is coming down, I cant have any fabric above my knees except underwear and bra to "death drop" so I can slow myself with my thighs and balance with my sternum and abdomen.

If you gain upper body strength you can climb with leg warmers. It looks more graceful to climb traditionally (using your ankle and calf muscle) but I prefer my method.
If you are willing to do for one year what other's won't, you can spend a lifetime doing what other's cant.

I think another key along with developing upper body strength is to also learn to grip between your knees. Here's another tutorial that might help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwQtEE2BzEg&feature=plcp Also here is some leg warmer climbing starting at 00:48 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uw3v557NrQQ When I twirl into the climb the way it's done in the video, the momentum makes it easier to pull myself up so I can catch the pole between the knees.
