    Default tipping tattoo artist??

I went to a tattoo shop with a good reputation, but even after waiting 2 hours & discussing over exactly how I wanted my tattoo, it did not come out right at all. The curve of the line isn't smooth and even, & it just seems like a really bad job. He finished it in 5 minutes & I was charged $60. I was so upset after seeing it. I asked if the line could be fixed or if it was possible, but he said no. So I said thank you & left. He seemed kind of upset & it wasn't until I got home that I realized I forgot to tip him. I called the shop & said I would stop by to tip him, but as I'm thinking about it, I'm wondering if I shouldn't. Maybe it happened for a good reason, because I am unhappy with the tattoo. I even asked if he could fix it or if it was possible, but he said no. Would you guys go back & tip or should I not do it?

Do you plan on ever returning to that shop for a "fix" on your tattoo or to see anyone else there? If not... then don't waste your time or money. Tats are permanent. I would be insanely pissed.

If the lines are uneven this guy is probably a novice or just doesn't give a crap. Since you said he did it in five minutes and charged $60 (usually the shop minimum) it sounds like a small simple design, easy for any decent artist to cover up or fix. Good to a good shop, one that is clean and professional and you have read good reviews on. If that artist does a good job fixing your design, totally tip him. From an industry prospective (I worked at a tattoo shop), when people come in to get something fixed and we do a good job, it usually opens the door for positive references and good customers. I'm sure you'll find an artist that can help you out.

Hope this helps and good luck getting your tattoo fixed.

Thank you so much for the advice! Really eases my mind.. as I felt so 'guilty' not tipping him, yet upset at the same time. The tattoo is already flat & in good shape (healing fairly quickly). How long do I have to wait before I go in to have someone fix it? I want to get it shaded, to have more dimension, and add a star. Do I have to wait a month or can I go in a week? The star goes in the middle of the design, which hasn't been touched, so I figured it would be okay to tattoo? Anyhow, thanks again!

You really don't need to wait long for a cover up. I'd say though let it fully heal and think long and hard how you want it to be fixed. At least a week lol...

Fuck that. I wouldn't tip. Any decent tattoo artist should be able to come up with a way to do a cover-up/fix. We're not talking about cutting off too much hair - we're talking permanent body art. So, he left a permanently fucked up mark on your body and refused to even talk about fixing it somehow? Oh hell no.

I would've debated even paying for that shit, let alone paying above and beyond.

I think the whole shop is sketchy. Although it was rated as 'one of the best'. For instance, the man at front claimed if you pay the deposit & decide you don't like how the tattoo artist stencils/sketches the tattoo & change your mind, you don't get your money back. I've been to a great tattoo shop in another state before & they never said anything like that!! I'm kind of.. a pushover I guess & quiet. And then at the end, when I was asking him if it can be fixed by going over the line, I must've not said it 'perfectly' because he said 'What I can't understand you. You don't even have a verb in that sentence." *sigh* They made me pay upfront before the tattoo.. & now hearing other feedback, I wish I would've been a bitch back. But I've contacted two tattoo artists who have a great profile & seem pretty nice, so I think it'll look great. At least right now he didn't shade it in or color it, so it's just a good base for a better artist. Thanks again!

I'm sorry that this happened. If you go into a shop for a coverup and you get a bad vibe, leave! This is your body. I can't even imagine the shit fit I would have had, haha.

WOW. What a dick! He fucks up your tattoo and then criticizes your grammar when you're asking him to fix it? I really hope you didn't go back and tip. Fuck that dude.

How on earth was this place rated one of the best? You need to go to whatever websites you read your reviews on and leave your own to warn people about how sketchy and shitty they are.

But yeah. Don't tip if they did a fucked up job.

Ah, thank you, I understand now. But I still think it's a little bit much if it takes him 2-5 min to sketch it out. Because he would've done a 2-5 min rough sketch if I had done a free consultation anyways.
