Default Hate going to the bank/ teller asking me what I do

One of the things I really hate about having a job in the adult industry is telling people what I do for a living. Sometimes I make-up a job, sometimes I say I'm a student, or just say what's appropriate for the situation. Only 5-6 people really know what I do, and those are the ONLY people who get to know. One of the social situations I cannot handle is going to the bank.

Does anyone else have nosy tellers asking you what you do for a living? One time I came in for a "evaluation of my account" and the mother-of-three 30-something asked me what I did for living as she saw my fairly hefty direct deposit checks (worked a lot that month) which just list it as being from MFCXY. I hate to say it, but I was to afraid of being judged so I said I bought things at thrift stores and re-sold them on eBay. Then, she kept asking me more questions about it and hinting that maybe I could show her how to do it. The whole time I'm making crap up. Incredibly awkward.

So my issue is, I wanted a preliminary evaluation for a mortgage and the lady handed me some papers asking about my job, income, copies of paystubs, W2 from the past two years and some others. First, I want to know how to explain what I do for a living; I want to avoid saying I work for a porn site. Second, my income from the past few months has been very sporadic. One month I took off work, the next I worked constantly, this month not very much, etc. I suspect that will look very bad to a lender. Before anyone asks, I plan on putting 50% down because I recognize this job is very roller-coast-like.

tl;dr- What to write as my job on mortgage application, and does anyone have something snappy to say to people who ask you what you for a living (and you don't want to tell them the truth).

Say you do internet sales. I have that on my taxes. You don't have to be specific - ESPECIALLY to that bank teller - it's none of her business what you do and to "show her how to do it too" she has her own job and shouldn't be prying into the specifics of yours. Tell her to Google it and switch the subject.

As for the mortgage question maybe someone else can help you with that. If you've paid your taxes you should be ok with proof. Say you're an independent contractor (NOT self-employed)

^^^ stating that you are an independent contractor involved in internet sales, plus showing two years worth of previously filed tax returns, should satisfy the bank's new fiduciary duty to 'verify' your income before considering approving a new mortgage loan. Same new bank fiduciary duty now applies to auto loans and other types of loans.

These new bank regulations are a direct outgrowth of the 'subprime mortgage debacle', where self-employed would-be borrowers were allowed to simply state their income level with no bank verification that such an income level actually existed. The same bank regulations force banks to question deposit records etc, since during the 'subprime mortgage debacle' certain individuals borrowed money from family members, liquidated retirement and other assets etc. and then used that money to 'simulate' the appearance of a high income via making regular deposits to a particular bank account.

it is totally rude for a bank teller to ask you what you do for a living. your financial transactions are suppose to be confidential in a bank.

You still have to claim being self-employed on your taxes though.

I was under the impression that "self-employed" and "independent contractor" weren't quite synonymous?

As camgirls, we are technically independent contractors: we don't pay ourselves, we are paid by a third-party company for doing work through their systems. Aren't we?

I have banked with HSBC for almost 6 years and recently had an online savings account I opened closed within a few weeks because when I applied for the account I listed myself as "self employed." When I called to compain and ask why a grand of my money had just disappeared along with my account I was told that I was not specific enough in listing my occupation. I explained that I AM self employed, I am not an employee anywhere, what, am I not allowed to have an online savings account with you because of that? They replied that, "It's okay if you are self employed, ma'am, but due to federal anti-money laundering laws you need to say self employed as what. Are you a self emplyed lawyer? Self emplyed teacher? Actress? This is what we need to know." I've never applied for a bank loan so I'm not sure if it's the same, but I would tread carefully. I'd hate to see you turned down because of something as stupid as "incorrectly" listing your occupation.

As far as what to say when strangers as when I do for a living? I usually say I work online from home. *Most* people think of that as such a foreign concept that they can't quite wrap their heads around how I'm able to fully support myself online, and while they're thinking of follow up questions to ask me I'm usually able to change the subject. If they're quick and they ask for specifics of what I do I say I'm an independent contractor. I've only had one or two people probe further, at which point when they ask me Again for the specifics of what I do I'll say I do affiliate marketing and sales. Trust me, most people give up by that point

Bank employees will ask questions when they notice large deposits or numerous deposits. They are trained to do so, so they can report suspicious activity.

If it is embarassing or frustrating, just make deposits at the ATM. They do not talk back.

I was listed as self employed at my bank, and then one of the tellers noticed that my past three checks had been from the same company (the company that owns Chaturbate). I said that no, I'm not employed by them; they are simply the ones that I have been working for recently, so they're the only ones I've gotten checks from.

Teller: Oh, okay. Well I'm going to go ahead and list them as your employer.
    Me: *facepalm*

Luckily, I was able to get it changed by another teller a few weeks later. Explained that I'm an IC online; I work for multiple companies, and happened to receive three checks in a row from the same one, but that I'm not employed by any of them. I don't think she even asked me what I did. If she did, then I probably told her that I was in customer service, but people seem far too curious about that; I'm going to start using Internet sales. :-)

Legally speaking, there are two separate topics involved. Earlier I discussed the new bank regulation regarding 'income verification' prior to applying for loans / credit. The teller questions come from another law. Terrorist Anti-Money Laundering laws require that bank employees monitor bank customers for 'suspicious activities' ... which apparently involve both patterns of sizeable bank deposits from 'questionable sources' as well as patterns of cash deposits. Customers whose financial activities arouse 'suspicion' from bank employees ( such as irregular amounts of deposits at irregular time intervals with the source of funds being 'unfamiliar' ) are probably being questioned in lieu of the bank employees being required to fill out 'suspicious activity reports' to the IRS and DHS naming that bank customer ( something which obviously increases the odds of an IRS audit ). Vamp or someone with operational bank experience can tell you better than I ... but I suspect that bank employees are motivated to try and classify every bank customer's occupation as a bank CYA measure.

As another poster mentioned indirectly, bank employee efforts to come up with the name of an 'employer' to list on bank account records appears to be another aspect of the bank CYA measures. Unfortunately, this allows for the possibility that the name Chartubate or Scores or other reasonably easy to identify adult webcam hosts or corporate strip club chain whose name regularly appears on deposited checks / transfers may wind up being picked up on from bank records by the credit reporting agencies and similarly listed as the 'employer' on the person's credit report. This could have potential future ramifications, as any prospective straight job employer, corporate landlord, lender etc. is going to pull that credit report.

IMHO the 'best' way to handle these sort of bank issues is to open a separate 'business' bank account ... into which all checks and bank transfers from webcam hosts, strip clubs, internet sales etc. are deposited. Then use this business account as the source of funds to 'pay yourself' via transfers of regular amounts of money at regular time intervals to your personal account. The existance of the separate 'business' bank account, and regular transfer payments to your personal account, automatically eliminates most of the need for bank employees to ask awkward questions. This financial structure also appears to be more 'professional' if the time comes when the IRS audits your taxes / business income, since it segregates 'business' activities from 'personal finances'.

Two larger points are worth mentioning, if they aren't immediately apparent. The first is that it's no longer sufficient to simply have / earn 'money'. That money must also now have an official 'history' . Banks and the IRS are increasingly tracking that 'history', and increasingly asking questions if that 'history' is non-existant / incomplete. The second is that once money does have an official 'history', that it will potentially be cross checked against related financial issues like income tax filings.

I'm in the UK and registered with our tax guys as self-employed as a provider of adult services. I'm not a contractor, I haven't been asked by AW to work for them for a period of time to do a certain job, like calling in a builder to fix the roof...I could work for other sites and do all sorts of things at the same time.

When it comes to mortgage applications, don't you have to sign a Statutory Declaration stating that the information you give is true? If you lie on your application you could be committing a criminal offence.

    Model would work I think.

As for others I tell them that I either don't work or I'm a psychic, since that is the other line I was following when I took up camming. They can think I'm crazy instead of dirty LOL.

When I go to the bank, I like to wear bright fake nails, smudge my heavy eye makeup, wear something way too revealing, and act hungover... then they can just figure it out for themselves lol

Yeeeah, seriously tho... Sometimes I like to just keep my sunglasses on indoors and look really unfriendly so no one wants to ask me shit.

I agree! But I have found that lots of people think that they are just being friendly - which is totally understandable. The majority of people have no qualms about talking about what they do for a living, although people who work in our industry tend to dread the question. I'm a very reserved person, naturally, so I am totally comfortable if people want to just do the job and not engage in any chit-chat, but that's just me - I know lots of people who really love the small talk! And I'm happy to admit - it changes depending on my mood! Some days I am happy, bouncy, and love a little friendly chit chat, and other days I am not having the best day, and am just like "why are these people TALKING. Just do the damn job and shut up! Grrrrrr!". I try to remember that they are just being polite, even when it drives me up the wall.

Oh - and my bank teller (who was usually the same guy, and really nice and helpful) asked what I did, and I said "affiliate marketing" - it usually confuses people, and they stop talking. However, in this case, I think he actually googled the company, because he always seemed EXTRA helpful after that...never said anything though.....

You should just use the ATM.
Or say business related, be confident with your answer, keep it short and simple.

And i,m not shy telling the nosy teller, my business is my business, if they insist.
To tell ' em i'm a stripper?! NOT on this earth! She might just note it down on my profile at the bank as my occupation, what i said, and i can enjoy the consequences later on on a background check. My teller is not my friend to make small talk with, unless it's about the weather or the dress i,m wearing.

the noisy teller can be alittle annoying, even if you told her you are stripper it could lead up to more questions. so you could say you work for temp agencies or internet marketing company. and if they want to know more details about how you sell stuff on ebay tell you really don't want to get into details about your work you just want to make your deposit.

I use to get that from when I was making deposits from escorting since I was in the bank almost every other day making deposits. I switched banks now and i mostly use the ATM to make deposits.

with your morgage and getting your account reviewed for that I thought you only need to speak with a morgage broker at the bank. which is what I have done here in Canada. it came out eventually in conversation because I recognized the broker is totally gay so I didn't think I would get those judgement questions from him. its funny how gay men get it more then gay women do.

and I thought you need 5% down for a home down payment but then again they say the more you have the better and the less cost for the moragage fees and insurance fees.

if your going to file your taxes as self employed they might want to see you being self employed for about 2 years, maybe even 3 to proove your stable on your income. but if you keep building up your savings you should be alright.

Independent contractor, internet sales, that is PERFECT
I live in Canada and for a couple months, I was getting cheques from the US. So I couldn't deposit them in my bank (RBC) in the ATM. I had to go to the teller and ask to deposit the US cheque. They kept asking "why do you have a US cheque?" and stuff. I would get it if it was a LOT but it was not much! Like under $1,000. I don't think I ever deposited anything over $600 in US. The biggest cheque I had, the teller kept looking back into my account "you seem to have US cheques occasionally" me "I know". She kept asking WHY? I was like, I do contracting work from the US and I get paid in cheques. Why can't you just go with it?!?!?
Anyway, now I'm not with RBC and I can deposit cheques through the ATM with my bank (PC Financial) and there aren't any problems (although I get wire transfers now).
I mean, if it was like a few thousand or something, okay maybe, but for a few hundred? Really?? LOL

I think my bank has SM listed as my employer, despite me telling them MULTIPLE times that SM does NOT employ me, they pay me for services. But they say that I HAVE to have an enployer listed.

Thankfully I get direct deposit through DP and Payoneer now, so it's less of an issue, but still.....
