Mind Blowing Matching (Or Dying?) Blonde Extensions...

Okay so how do you match blonde hair to extensions? It seems like every place I've had a consultation with refuses to dye my blonde clip-ins (brand new, human hair), and a couple salons said the only way they'd match it (to the same color as my hair) would be if I purchased their bonded or sewn in pieces... but I don't want those kinds. I only want clip-ins. I've had protein fusion pieces, microlinks/rings, seamless wefts (glued), taped extensions (hair tape), and even some pieces sewn in but I hated all of them except clip ins. I'm not going to pay over $1,000 for extensions I hate and immediately want out, but these stylists aren't having it.

So... should I dye them myself? And maybe put some highlighted pieces in my hair to match it? If I use a toner instead all over my newly dyed hair + extensions, I'm worried it'll turn out ugly. Should I just go for it?

Previously, I got lucky and purchased extensions almost the same shade as my hair, but I know that won't happen again. The blonde I like is such an awkward color... like butterscotch meets champagne meet honey. Most of the time I never wore extensions because my hair was naturally long anyway, but now its shorter so I need something quick! How do I get my real hair & my extensions to be the same shade(s) of blonde?

Whats the issue exactly? Are they too light or too dark? Are they attached to clips with glue or with thread?

I've dyed extensions before... I just need a better idea of what the problem is.

P.S. The salons probably just want you to buy their overpriced junk.

    Also....

I would never suggest that you dye your hair to match the extensions. Fucking with your hair is the last thing you want to do. You can always buy new extensions if they spontaneously combust or dissolve or sprout dinosaurs. But dying your hair to match is not necessary.

Give us some specifics about the extensions you have. What's the brand name? Can you post pics of them compared to your hair?

I'm 1000% committed to putting your hairstylists to shame.

I have several colors, but none that match. My hair is going to be highlighted which makes it even harder to match up because there will be more than one shade. Sucks. They are clip ins. I will post pictures next week and resurrect this thread.

^ My hair has around 3 colors in it and I wear 6/613 though they aren't exact when I put them in they blend wonderfully. I also went to the buty supply and found there are like 3 sets of different color combinations that work. Most clip ins are a mixture of multiple colors. Did you put the set in and see if they blend. My real hair is to my just past my boobs so maybe that's why so many colors in variations match?

    Meh.

I feel as though you're being unduly reticent/taciturn/whatever.

Here are the steps: generally speaking... since you can't tell me whether the extensions are LIGHTER or DARKER... who made them... or what color your hair is currently.

    1. Wash the hair (extensions). Cleansing shampoo + warm-ish water... not too hot, though.

    2. Rinse. Thoroughly.

    3. Dry.... I like to hang my extensions to dry. Some folks lay them flat... use your best judgement.

    4. After the hair is dry color it. Meaning bleach it, dye it, or tone it. Again, I dunno the details......... (Keep in mind some hair colors require that you apply them when the hair is actually wet. Since I have no clue what you are doing... I will be general in my approach.)

    5. Rinse thoroughly.

    6. Condition.... I use a leave in or a glaze... it seems slightly more permanent that way.

    7. Rinse... maybe NOT so thoroughly this time around. Leave-in conditioners work too.

    8. Dry.

    9. OR!!!
Dry Partially----->Style... set it and forget it. This is primarily for rollers. Setting the extensions whilst they are damp and letting them dry overnight is a good idea if you want to avoid damaging the hair and have the luxury of time.

I haven't done my hair yet, so I can't tell you if they'll be lighter or darker. All I know is that they won't be the same color (the same tone) because the color I want (the one I use to have) does not have extensions that match. The color is like #27 with like a beige glaze over it, but I can't find extensions that color. They've only done test strips on my hair, but the color is still hard to match . The extensions I have right now are #27, #613, a 27 & 613 mix, #24, and #22 (wayyyyy too light, but good for dying). I've been to Sallys and I can't find the color there.

I would suggest.. Keep going to different salons, and make sure they only do a stain-test first so they dont rip you off or not match the color. I had this happen to me. I found a hair exntesions specalists who colored my extensions. I was a 613/27 with extenions as my hair was going a translation from dark to blonde that I had orange bits still. After when I got full blonde, I needed color 22 in extensions, but didnt match prefectly as I had highlights. So I found some guy, he took the smallest peice cut it making it 5cm wide and colored it and showed me the results, it costed 180$. Just keep looking, dont go to the "big" nice looking salons, go to one that has good reviews and has good colorists, make an appointment with them all and see what they can do. I think how they are offering not to do this is a joke... Keep looking.

I also wouldnt color your real hair either, it changes with the sun and gets lighter, happened to me so extensions became useless...
You seriously described my exact situation. I'm going from dark to light and the color I want is like a 27 mixed with 613 only with a cool beige glaze over it. The problem is that my hair will be cool, but all the extensions I've found are either too warm or too light. The color is a hard one. Its a warm honey blonde with champagne pieces, with a cool beige glaze over it. I've seriously gone to like 5 different salons, and ones that are supposed to be the best of the best. Their egos get in the way, I think. Its soooo annoying. They are supposed to be awesome colorists too. But I think the issue is that they want to sell me their overpriced extensions but they don't even sell clip ins and I won't settle for anything else.

How did you find the hair extension specialist? I can't find any in San Francisco

So anyway, what I can suggest if you want to TRY yourself, but I honestly wouldnt advise it. The guy I went to, took the 613/27 hair extensions and had to match it to my hair. My real hair was two-tone, my blonde was slightly darker in cool tone compared to the blonde bits of the extensions, while the darker parts were close to a 27 but in a cool/beige color.

He had to split the extensions, as if he was doing real highlights, and do the 613 and 27 seperately with different colors. He used a Voliet based toner, (t18 by wella) is the closest I can think of. He did this on a strain test, left it for 5 mins and the 27 turned pale purple. He assured me he konws what to do, but it was quiet close. When he showed me the final result, it was cool begie 27. He said he left the toner for a short amount of time.. Im guessing less than 5 mins, and said he applied a color around 8N/G (on the color chart the 27 turned out exactly like that color). As for the blonde, my blonde was darker and slightly cooler in tone compared to the extensions, so Im guessing he just applied a 9N (which was the color of my blonde hair) to match.

Im just explaining the colors he used, but your results might be way off compared to mine because I am not fully sure how much he mixed, or how much he left it on for etc. So its just a step in what the hair dresser should be doing to your extensions not a step by step. I found him when I was searching for reviews of salons, I called in told them I need my clip ins colored and whether someone is willing to do that, they said yes, when I met him, he did say its more expensive, and he did mention he does those other hair extensions, but he saw my DAMAGED hair which I told him are from those and Im only doing clips so he was really quick and pick out the colors quickly, but the results were perfect. Keep searching... If that doesnt work, some stores that sell extentions also have salon chairs where they offer services, you can ask them to color it but there arent many even here.
This is the color I'm getting. Its the color I used to have. It BETTER turn out this color or close. But I have never been able to find extensions that match, and its the perfect color on me, and yes that is me. So what color extensions would match this? Everything is either too warm (too red) or too light if its cool. I will do it myself if you know which toners match. Thanks!

It is NOT that color yet. Maybe I should just have them try to match the extensions? Id rather have that color though and make the extensions match the color.

It's much easier to purchase lighter extensions and dye/tone them (darker) to match your actual hair.

How would I do this though? If I toned over my entire head (of bleached hair) as well as the (lighter) extensions, would it all turn out about the same color? I don't think I should use box dye (i.e. drugstore) right because I hear its more damaging? But I'm wondering if a toner is actually strong enough to do the job of dying the extensions darker?

If you can find 613 with 18, instead of 27, it will have more of a cool base, if 613 is too light, try 22 with 18. I buy mine at a store so 613/18 and 22/18 are rarely seen. But go to an exntension store and take those colors 613 or 22 (are blonde) see which shade matches you better, and I think 18 would make your undertones, since it has a cool ashy base. Im basing this one your last pic.
Its actually all the same hair color (in all 3 pics), just the last one looks lighter because I used flash instead of natural light.

I have never been able to find a color that matches. Its like the blonde is so warm & dark, but the overall tone is cool so it photographs (with flash and in the sunlight) really really really unmatching :-(.

if you end up coloring them, test the color on a smaller clip in that you won't mind throwing away... like a 1 or 2 incher. that way in case it doesn't go well you didn't ruint he whole set.

I would say... sew 2 or three different colors to match the highlights and lowlights... Like, buy the wefts yourself, cut them and sew them together yourself (2 layers thick) and sew the clips on yourself... I've worn them 2 layers thick and it looks better anyway. It still blends in under your hair.

Dying clip in extensions is a huge pain in the ass and they can get pretty scraggly and matted quickly if you wash them too much. I don't know if simply buying new extensions is an option for you but that's what I do whenever I change my hair color. Have you ever heard of the brand "Lord&Cliff 7-Piece Clip-in Extensions?" That's the brand that I use, and they are good quality human remy hair with a huge variety of colors- especially blondes and highlight blends. I buy mine from a wig/weave/extension store that caters primarily to black women. The sales associates there are SOO good at matching the extensions to my hair. Maybe call around to some of the hair stores around you to see if they carry that brand? The 18-inch extensions run about $130 if I remember right. Good luck!!!!

I have no problem buying new extensions. I went out and bought like 7 packs but none of them match. The problem is that the color is not sold anywhere.

    Help me to help you.

Have you purchased your extensions already or are you considering purchasing lighter/darker/other extensions?

My understanding has been that the extensions you have are warmer in tone than your actual hair. No worries there is a solution for that.
My other understanding is that you are considering buying another set (different color lighter-or-darker) of extensions and coloring them to match your hair. No worries that can work as well.

    MAJOR POINTS:

1--- You dye your hair to YOUR liking. Don't worry about the extensions. Just get your color done right

2--- You compare your hair color to the extensions.

3--- You tone 'em, dye 'em, or lighten 'em... to match with your hair.

---3.1--- I like to use a box dye on my extensions. It's cheap and effective. You can look at my previous post for full instructions. If the extensions are LIGHTER than your finished hair color, it is way easier to tone them or to dye them to a darker shade... to a slightly darker shade... or to a barely darker shade. It is much easier to do that than to lighten them.

---3.2--- Lightening extensions can be tricky. It is more damaging than just dying them darker, which is why I suggested (if you have the option) of buying lighter hair.

---3.3--- That being said if you have a specific set of extensions in your possession, I am happy to help you out. The fewer hypothetical variables there are, the better my advice will be.

4--- If you already have your extensions and they are too warm in tone (but close enough to your hair color, post-dye-job) just use a toner to cool them down to a neutral shade. DO NOT TONE ---YOUR--- HAIR. You're trying to match the extensions *to* your hair not the other way around. OK?
