Angry Since when is "thick" a compliment

I had a near nuclear meltdown today. I was at our local Wawa putting gas and getting coffee when some random idiot shouts "Hey baby you be looking nice and thick like I like 'em". I was infuriated. If it had been a few months ago when I was a front runner for Ms. Porky 2012 fine. Yeah I was bordering on thick. Fast forward to now. I am back in my size 5's and losing (y'all have seen the pics) I eat better and have totally cleaned up my diet. I know it sounds dumb but shit like this makes me feel my hard work is in vain. "Thick" is not a compliment to me. To me it is another euphemism for fat, along with "curvy" "voluptuous" and a whole other host of synonyms used to justify being overweight.

Anyone ever feel insulted when being called "thick" when you bust your ass?

Absolutely not. Usually 'thick' in my culture means curvaceous. It never means fat. There's slim/skinny then thick and then fat. They don't mean the same thing at all. I'm thick and I love it. I work out, I'm toned and well proportioned. But it's probably just a culture thing.

^^^^ I changed my diet ALOT. I used to eat really badly especially after my BA. Croissants, pasta, bread, you name it. I gained about 10llbs and on my small frame that did NOT look good. I got on the Paleo diet, dropped 10llbs and feel wayyyy better about myself. But sometimes I do get overly sensitive.

They were boys. Honestly all they were probably looking at was your giant cans. Which are giant so they musta assumed you had a certain shape by just looking at one area. And ya Id be pissed too. I don't understand why men cat call and honk anyway... yet another reason I will never ever get the opposite sex.

Well what annoyed me was I was wearing a tracksuit with a hoodie. If I was wearing a tank top and dukes I'd expect a measure of cat calling but a tracksuit?

"Thick" is a body type that you can't get rid of. I am considered "thick" even though I'm not big at all and hoover around 125 lbs give or take. Thick just means you have meat on your thighs, ass, hips, and breasts. Unfortunately, you can't get rid of "thickness" unless you have the muscle and bone like sawed off/out of your body. It really has nothing to do with body fat (though it can), but rather body shape. I just think everyone should be happy with the body type they have, because changing your body type is unrealistic since it can't be done without lots of surgical intervention. (No this is not directed at anyone, just a general statement.)

I was called voluptuous the other day and since I'm a loser I googled voluptuous which was not a pretty sight. My boyfriend told me that since I'm a 34DD men mean voluptuous as a compliment where I heard "fat".

There is no parallel whatsoever between curvy and fat. And very few people outside those creepy pro-ANA sites ever confused these two terms until the media started glamorizing shapeless, skeletal women. Even on this site I don't remember reading threads like this when I joined back in 2006.

    This is a curvy woman:

    article-0-133B2DB0000005DC-776_634x813.jpg

    This is a fat woman:

    beautiful-chubby-women-26.jpg

This is the type of woman the media has decided to call "ideal":

    keira_knightley_bikini_skinny.jpg

For my money, the second and third pics are equally unhealthy and repulsive. They're just opposite ends of the spectrum.

I would be pissed too! I know you're near my hieght (im 5;2) and for us shorties being called "thick" isnt a compliment. The thing is, men notice boobs and ass over anything else, you have big tits and ass (even if you wore a hoodie, guys can still tell the boobies and ass are big) maybe thats all he meant and as compliment. Guys dont think thick=fat, for men fat=fat, he wouldn't say anything if he meant fat.

Dont let some creep get to you though. Stick with your deit and working out, because you look great already, no point of going to the donut shop and loosing all of that work!

I've gotten this when I worked at thee dolll house and we had up time the dj use to call me that and I'm just shy of 5eet 6 and 113 but was around 120 then still skinny for my height. I also had an asian guy in key west say ' oh I like you because your not a stick like some dancers. I think it's because I have a super small waist but have hips and even though I'm skinny I have an hourglass shape I'm not straight up and down or square like most skinny girls.

Actually by medical definition, 5' 6" and 113 is underweight. That's not the same as emaciated or anorexic and in this case it's not too far below the norm, but it is below the healthy weight range. And believe it or not, the death rate associated with being underweight is very similar to that of morbid obesity. Look it up.

I'm logging off for now, but here is a good place to learn some important facts about many of the terms people tend to use without knowing what they mean. Especially since thanks to the retards in the media a lot of people think unhealthy only applies to those who are overweight. I'd recommend everyone to use the BMI calculator and also check out the links at the bottom right corner.

BMI does not account for muscle. By the BMI standards I am borderline obese. I cannot pinch an inch. Since muscle weighs more than fat, BMI is totally useless and archaic.

I'm definitely not underweight. I don't really workout and was 89 pounds until I got on the pill and even then I was 102 and when I had my daughter I went up to 118-125 when I was on the antidepressants. I look fat at 125 ( to me) because I have a healthy body fat like 17-18 percent because I eat poorly. Believe me many girls here have seen me and I definitely don't look underweight!

I had a complete meltdown on cam once because someone called me "curvy" or thick or something and someone threw in the word "rolls"... at that time I was struggling with an aggressive patch in EDNOS and that tipped me over the edge. I had to binge on something and you know what it was? 6 eggs scrambled. So you can see where my head was at. But guys just have no idea what buttons they're pushing when they say shit like that.

IMHO, a woman is not really thick unless she's build like an LFL linebacker. Now, that's thick.

I hate this too. I have been called "thick" "curvy" and all the others. Yes I am heavier than say a size 0 but the heaviest I have ever been is a size 12 and that was not my norm (and then I started losing weight). My norm dancing was usually a 5-6 and sometimes a 3-4 or even a 7-8. However I am also very muscular and could never be extremely thin if I wanted. I do not have a big butt at all yet some guys would tell me they liked my "thick butt".

You know what pisses me off about this? That words like curvy, voluptous etc all used to mean women like Marilyn Monroe. Now the fat girls (I'm talking fat in the normal world like dancing)like to compare themselves to women with good figures.

Once I started working out heavily my weight went up, not down. I would go into crying jags asking why I was getting fat until I asked my trainer and she said because I put on muscle easily. My arms and legs have little to no fat at all.

When I hear curvy I think of an hour glass figure & "S" shape(your ass & Tits stick out. Lower dipped back) when turned side ways. Which can be at any weight. Other words, not flat and straight.

I'm 5'7" and was 113 a year and a half ago. Not a single doctor ever told me I was underweight or had any health issues or risks associated with my weight. I've since gained to 120-125 and felt far better at ~115.

Meanwhile, my 5'4" friend is a "thick" girl and feels like shit if she drops below 125. By "thick," I mean: large breasts, has to work out to keep weight off her midsection, and carries a lot of curve in her hips. She would probably be horribly offended if I or anyone else called her thick though. I think men see it as a compliment primarily because of the way it is popularized in music. Girls who have big asses and boobs are thick. Just as some men think it's a compliment to call a girl skinny (I think it is a bit offensive, like I'm malnourished or underdeveloped, whereas "thin" would be much better), others just think that thick sounds good too.

Thick is supposed to be a compliment ... and a size 5 on a short person is thick.

That's so weird. Im the same height and im usually in the same weight range (I say usually because I've probably gained gazillion lbs since moving) and doctors seem to focus on my weight a lot, lol. Even if I'm going for.something totally unrelated the weight and diet questions seem to find their way out of the bag.

ETA: Regarding the OP: sometimes when I hear a guy use the term 'thick' in a sentence it is almost as if it is used as a substitute for the word 'sexy' (or a related word) so maybe it wasn't meant so much in the literal sense but more as an expression that the person who said this associates with the term 'sexy'?

    From: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/ar...dy-bodies.html

"Real women have posted images of themselves in their swimwear for a 'fatkini' gallery as a retaliation against society's obsession with super-slim summer bodies."

So that pissed me off. Because if a girl actually has a body of a bikini model, god knows she is not a "real woman".

And obvs starves herself, because nobody could just lose weight by eating right and exercising.
